YouGov: Labor 30, One Nation 26, Coalition 19, Greens 13 (open thread)

Separate polls find the Coalition and Labor primary votes at new depths, plus a Farrer by-election poll suggesting a race between One Nation and an independent.

The fortnightly YouGov Sky News Pulse poll has what might be the most dispiriting poll result yet for the Coalition, showing them running a distant third behind One Nation even after the leadership change intended to staunch the flow. The Coalition is down three points on last fortnight to 19%, matching their worst result under Sussan Ley the fortnight before, while One Nation is at 26%, up two from last fortnight though still down two on the fortnight before. Labor is up a point to 30% and the Greens are steady on 13%. A Labor-versus-Coalition two-party preferred reading has Labor leading 55-45, out from 53-47 a fortnight ago.

Angus Taylor’s personal ratings are nonetheless little changed on a fortnight ago, up one on approval to 34% and steady on disapproval at 38%, while Anthony Albanese is down two to 38% and steady on 54%. Albanese’s lead on preferred prime minister is 45-33, out from 45-34. Asked how well Jim Chalmers’ policies had dealt with the cost of living, 16% responded very well or well compared with 53% for not very well or very badly and 31% for neither. The poll was conducted last Tuesday through to yesterday. The sample size is not provided, but would have been about 1500.

UPDATE: The sample size was 1425. Also included was a Labor-versus-One Nation two-party result, which also had Labor leading 55-45.

Also out yesterday was the weekly Roy Morgan poll, giving Labor its worst primary vote yet from this series at 26.5%. However, most of this seems to have been taken up by a three-point lift for the Greens to 14.5%. One Nation was up one-and-a-half to 23.5%, with the Coalition down one to 22.5%. Labor leads the Coalition 54.5-45.5 based on respondent-allocated preferences, out from 54-46, and 53-47 based on previous election preference flows, in from 53.5-46.5. The poll was conducted Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1532.

The first published poll for the Farrer by-election has emerged courtesy of progressive think tank the Australia Institute, conducted by uComms last Thursday and Friday from a sample of 1281. It featured questions inclusive of Labor and undecided component, and further questions asking how Labor voters would vote if there were no Labor candidate, as looks to be the case, and a forced response for the undecided. Working all these results together, I make it 31.6% for One Nation, 30.3% for independent Michelle Milthorpe, 22.0% for the Liberals, 7.6% for the Nationals and 5.8% for the Greens. Respondents were also asked who they would least like to win out of One Nation, Milthorpe, Liberal and the Nationals, with respective results of 37.1%, 29.5%, 22.2% and 11.2%.

I hope everything works out for the Iranian team, both those staying and those going home. What a terrible position to be in

What was talked about the Albanese Trump call? Just the team or our commitment to send resources to the UAE as well. Just a coincidence the announcement was made after the phone call?

  4. Meanwhile in the Trump world this is how war goes when you’ve got a toddler in charge.

If you’re feeling a bit disoriented, you are not alone: “Trump contradicts himself on Iran repeatedly in just a few hours | CNN Politics/ Trump Gives Conflicting Signals and Mixed Messages on Iran Nuclear Talks – The New York Times

Over the last few days, Trump has suggested the war with Iran will last for weeks, demanded “UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER,” but also declared “Mission Accomplished.” He continued lying about the bombing of the Iranian school killing 175 men, women, and children. And yesterday, he called a CBS News reporter “and said the war is pretty much over — a report that caused the markets to spike — but “then Trump called a bizarre and incoherent press conference at one of his golf resorts where he said no no no, it’s not pretty much over.…” He referred to the war as a “little excursion,” and declared: “We’ve already won in many ways, but we haven’t won enough.”

By the end of the day, he was threatening “Death, Fire, and Fury”

All of this happened after Trump had a lengthy call with Vladimir Putin, who is helping the Iranians target Americans. “He wants to be helpful,” Trump said of Putin.

  5. In RFK Jr news, a cautionary tale for the elderly…

    By Karoun Demirjian
    Reporting from Washington
    March 10, 2026, 11:30 a.m. ET
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the secretary of health and human services, is having rotator cuff surgery on Tuesday, according to a spokeswoman for the department, who said he planned to return to work on Monday.

The department did not immediately respond to a query as to whether Mr. Kennedy’s injury was caused by the intense workouts he has promoted since taking the helm of the agency.

Mr. Kennedy, 72, has promoted the workouts as part of a wider campaign to improve Americans’ health. Last year, he and Pete Hegseth, the secretary of defense, launched a fitness initiative in which they challenged people to 100 push-ups and 50 pull-ups in under 10 minutes.

Mr. Kennedy has also publicized himself working out with various public figures, including other cabinet secretaries and the musician Kid Rock.

Before YouGov does their MRP model that contradicts anything about this one I’ll probably from now on going to apply the swings from future polls onto this one since not only does it have One Nation on 17% of the vote as a baseline and thus also models the types of seats that the party can win, but now I can use demographics, and geographical data rather than just relying on the Mackerras pendulum alone which is getting more and more outdated now that minor parties and independents are now viable options that can get seats in the House of Representatives.

Both sides of the Straits of Hormuz resemble a ship parking lot, and despite reports to the contrary, few are making the dash through.

Thanks. The problem with the marine tracker is that it maps ships that have turned their transponders on. It seems to me that formerly only the ships running the Strait had their transponders off. But it now seems to me that at least some of the ships in or near the parking lots have their transponders off as well.
Chinese ships and Iranian ships are going through.
The main point, IMO, is correct.

WTF is she even doing competing at that event? She has done nothing to indicate opposition either to Putin or to his war upon Ukraine – in fact, somewhat the opposite, according to Google Gemini AI:

Q: Has Mirra Andreeva ever criticised Putin or his war upon Ukraine?

Mirra Andreeva has not publicly criticized Vladimir Putin or the war in Ukraine. In fact, her public-facing actions have leaned in the opposite direction, leading to significant friction with Ukrainian players and international advocacy groups.

Instead of speaking out against the conflict, Andreeva has been at the center of several controversies regarding her perceived support for the Russian government:

    Key Controversies
    1. Social Media “Likes”: In 2023, Ukrainian player Dayana Yastremska called on the WTA to sanction Andreeva after it was discovered the teenager had “liked” several social media posts related to the war. These included a video featuring Vladimir Putin making a joke about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s funeral.
    2. State Honors from Putin: Following her silver medal win in doubles at the 2024 Paris Olympics (where she competed as an Individual Neutral Athlete), reports indicated that Andreeva and her partner Diana Shnaider accepted state honors from the Russian government. This led to calls from groups like Global Rights Compliance to have their medals stripped for violating “neutrality” principles.
    3. Nationality Stance: Unlike several other Russian players (such as Daria Kasatkina) who have been vocal about their opposition to the war or have changed their citizenship, Andreeva has stated as recently as early 2026 that she has “no plans” to change her nationality and prefers to “continue as is.”

    Professional Impact
Her lack of a critical stance has resulted in visible tension on the court:
    1. Handshake Refusals: Ukrainian players, most notably Elina Svitolina, consistently refuse to shake hands with Andreeva after matches.
    2. Crowd Reactions: Andreeva has occasionally been met with boos from fans, particularly during high-profile matches against Ukrainian opponents, due to the lingering social media and political controversies.

In press conferences, Andreeva typically avoids political topics entirely, focusing her comments on her tennis performance and her desire to stay out of “separate” political discussions.

I’m sick of idiots who think these Russians who support the killing of Ukrainians can just be admitted to civilised life, as if nothing of importance is at stake in attempts to isolate Russians for their genocidal imperial adventures.

Notice who this Russian brat is being contrasted to? Go Daria Kasatkina! The world needs more – many, many more – Russians to emulate her.

No wonder Littleproud is moving on, sub 20 for the LNP is awful

I hope everything works out for the Iranian team, both those staying and those going home. What a terrible position to be in

What was talked about the Albanese Trump call? Just the team or our commitment to send resources to the UAE as well. Just a coincidence the announcement was made after the phone call?

On current trends the Liberal Party will join the Greens at equal to or less than 13% before the end of the year.

ON will form the second major party.

Government will be decided by preference roulette.

Given the significant shift to the Right since the last election, it will control the BOP in the Senate. Most of this shift is because of young men forming a manosphere in response to what they perceive as economic and social injustices foisted on them by Boomer feminists.

    Enjoy!

  12. We must be more level headed here in SW Sydney. I’ve yet to see any queuing for petrol anywhere. I almost disbelieve there is any panic buying going on. If it’s happening at all, it is clearly a geographically patchy phenomenon.

Or maybe, we’re just so dirt poor here we couldn’t afford to panic buy even if we wanted to.

  13. Susan McDonald on RN Breakfast saying she’ll put her hand up for deputy depending on who wins the leadership. It’ll be interesting to see which way they jump. My guess is Hogan

Also made the valid point that the government hasn’t managed the fuel issue well with people buying 1000 litres in domestic settings while farmers, fishermen and miners are facing restrictions

  14. Remember that I told you that the guy from the petrol retailers association said a couple of days ago people were turning up with massive containers to put petrol in? Well, there’s the visual proof. 😯

  15. One of the many reasons I thought Albanese was a good prime minister was that he kept us out of war.
He has now failed that test, IMO.
I can see why. He doesn’t want Australia treated like Spain ($30 billion instant loss of exports) or Canada (massive industrial disruption and 6.8% unemployment rate). When you have to deal with a demented, disinhibited and malignant narcissist you do what you must.

I can see that joining the war has been very carefully and deliberately calibrated.

    1. Ostensibly it helps defend civilians, including 116,000 Australians.
    2. It defends against incoming missiles and drones, many such of which have already hit civilian targets. (The same discussion about the Iranian girls school could just as well be had against the civilian targets hit by Iranian missiles and drones. I assume that Waters and Shoebridge will lead the charge on this.)
    3. The missiles AMRAAMs are defensive in nature. Why? Because they are specifically designed as anti-missile and anti-drone missiles.
    4. The number of Australian troops is miniscule. We won’t add much to the 30,000 Afghanistan vets. This is good, IMO. The troops will, I assume, be based somewhere relatively safe and are unlikely to come home with PTSD.
    5. There will be no action by the ADF on Iranian soil or in Iranian waters.
    6. In the nature of modern war communications have to be integrated to a high level. Inter alia this has to happen to stop someone from shooting down the Wedgetail. It will be argued that this integration aids offensive operations. IMO, there is zero evidence that Israel or the US needs any additional information at all over Iranian waters and soil. They have 100% and instant surveillance over the movement of anything larger than a Tonka toy truck. The Wedgetail’s specific task will be to track incoming, especially low flying, missiles and to feed that into the defensive missile effort. It will do an excellent job of just that. Iran is not firing a lot of missiles at our oil traffic in the Gulf ATM. It may well be that the Wedgetail becomes involved in protecting tankers and container ships from being attacked by incoming missiles and drones.
    7. The initial request seems to have come from the UAE, possibly backed up by a subsequent request from Trump.
    8. The ‘initial deployment’ is for four weeks. Good luck with that, IMO.
    9. Will there be scope creep? There are many known unknowns but I believe that that is not likely. In particular, Albanese has been consistent all along. Using an asinine terminology, Australia will not be ‘putting boots on the ground’* in Iran.
    10. The mission objective is clear: to help shoot down incoming missiles and drones. This is a good objective, IMO. Will some missiles and drones still get through? Yes, IMO. And this is one possible pressure on scope creep.
    11. It is extremely unlikely that anyone will actually die as a result of Australia’s contribution because Iran has few serviceable warplanes to start with. Most of these have been destroyed on the ground. Any attempt to take off has been met with more or less instant death for the pilot. As for planes so for naval launch platforms (less the tinnies hidden in caves and tunnels). That leaves unmanned ground-launched missiles and drones.

So, IMO, Albanese joins every single Australian prime minister for the past three decades in becoming a war prime minister. That it is a limited war does not make it any the less a war. That it is not a declared war does not make it any the less a war.

    This makes me very sad.

*war propaganda speak for ‘violently invading’.

  16. I see that moral panic has disrupted the domestic fossil fuel distribution chain.

bwahahaha, at so many, many levels.

Get some common sense. Servos profiteering? Hoarding? Petrol bombs in your garage? Can’t harvest your crop? Can’t cart your goods to the supermarkets? Hate getting on a bus or a train with the hoi polloi?

Well, then. Don’t get all your information from social media or moral panic merchants who infest the Nationals, Liberals, ON and Greens.

  19. Good interview with David Shoebridge on RN Breakfast this morning, well worth a listen

Made the perfectly logical point that our troops and resources being in the UAE will free up US ones to attack Iran. We are now active participants in the illegal war. At the request of Trump?

I know of a couple of Labor members who have resigned their memberships over this, there will be more imo

Off to work, enjoy your day

  20. Sprocket – There is a lot of GPS ‘spoofing’ happening in the Hormuz region. This messes with AIS data and ships are not always where the data says they are. Not a single oil tanker has passed the straits in the past 24 hours.
Nor do I expect many to run the gauntlet any time soon, especially now mines are turning up.

“Guardian Australia can reveal the concerns were aired during a meeting of Labor’s left faction after the first strikes on Iran in February, which triggered the conflict that has since spread across the region.

Details of the meeting have been unreported until now after the Labor caucus quickly fell into line behind the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, the foreign affairs minister, Penny Wong, and the defence minister, Richard Marles.”

Definitely a good sign that the party themselves are concerned about Albos actions…

Both sides of the Straits of Hormuz resemble a ship parking lot, and despite reports to the contrary, few are making the dash through.

    Sprocket
It is not Iran, which is stopping the traffic. It is set of 6 Reinsurance companies sitting in London, which are refusing to reinsure any ship passing through Strait of Hormuz that is causing the traffic jam. They are doing that because of the high risk involved.

  27. Farrer should go to the wire between ON and Milthorpe. Too close to pick just yet.

But a wipeout for the Nats is a certainty. One would have to wonder how much a bit of advance notice of the polling influenced Littleproud.

It remains to be seen whether his departure will be seen as a good thing by Farrer electors, or bad.

I suspect that a leadership win by McCormack would be seen as good: a return to steady hands after Littleproud’s turmoil. And he’s almost a local in Riverina.

    _______

    Say what?

France is now heading an aircraft carrier taskforce to the Middle East whose purpose seems to be relevantly similar to the air-defence mission that our Wedgetail and AMRAAM batteries will be tasked with (relevantly different in that its size is very significantly larger and is expanded from merely shooting down incoming drones and missiles and based at sea in the eastern Mediterranean). Included in that taskforce are AEGIS equipped Spanish Frigates (ie. the same baseline design as our Hobart AWDs). So … if Australia is now ‘at war’, so is Spain (for all of Trump’s shit-canning and trade punishment). … only more so.

Personally, I don’t buy ‘the line’ that Australia is NOW at war. Nor do I see this as a significant shift in Albo’s position. I don’t see him any more a ‘war time’ PM than he was last year when he expelled the Iranian embassy following the IRG’s involvement in orchestrating the arson attacks on the soup kitchen and synagogue 18 months ago – a far more ‘war like’ act of aggression by a foreign power than merely providing purely defensive air defensive systems to the Gulf (in point of fact, not a single Aussie AMRAAM missile will be fired in anger if an Iran missile or drone isn’t in its terminal attack phase over the skies of the UAE).
