Having waited rather too long for a new blog post topic to fall into my lap, here’s one that falls back on the regularly updated tracking poll of Anthony Albanese’s approval ratings maintained by US pollster Morning Consult, which maintains the exercise for twenty leaders internationally. While these numbers have been basically steady since June, they suggest that Albanese ended the year on something of a high, with his approval registering at either 59% or 60% after easing to 55% in November, and his disapproval down since that time from 32% to 28%.
As for when the polling treadmill will crank back into action, I note that the Age/Herald had a Resolve Strategic poll in the third week of last year, although that may have reflected the imminence of a federal election. Newspoll and Essential Research took a fortnight longer to resume regular transmission.

Mike Rann, even with a majority, had a Nat, Karlene Maywald, in his cabinet serving as Water Minister. The Liberals hated that immensely.

It’s not so much that the electorate is too conservative than the fact that the real power in the country lies in the hands of the Murdoch-rag media. The latter is precisely why Labor and Liberal are not respectively left and right, but right and far right.
However, as in the USA and Britain, there IS clearly a lesser evil.

One of the tasks of the Albanese Governmentis to shift the Overton Window left, i.e. towards the centre. In due course beyond, but that’s not someting that can happen overnight. Labor needs to take the community with it.
Alas, if the LNP, Greens & Blak Greens manage to defeat The Voice referendum, then the whole of the Uluru process is finished.
There will never be another referendum within the foreseeable future.
The process and the healing will be lost for generations, because it is the majority of non-indigenous Australians that will determine the fate of the Statement from the Heart, rather than those of us who are committed to the aspirations of the majority of First Nations peoples.
Although, the LNP may have a lot to answer for, if the referendum fails, it will be the Blak Greens and their supporters who will ultimately be responsible if this process fails.
A friend of mine, working at Vic ALP HQ, decided to make things official and enrolled in Politics at Uni.
He would sit there as some boffin explained how something was done in the Labor Party.
At the end of the lecture, he would approach said boffin, explain that what they had talked about was literally what he was doing right now, and that they had got it totally wrong.
The boffins – it happened multiple times – generally refused to believe him.*
As for the discussion overnight re the sequencing of Voice etc, once again, I’m sorry if people think FN people have got it wrong, but even if they have, I’ll be guided by what they want, rather than some randoms on t’net.
*This conversation was sparked by my reading a textbook on politics which was quite badly wrong on something to do with the ALP.
