Preselection latest

As the Victorian Liberals get candidates in place for target Labor seats, a new vacancy opens in a marginal of their own.

Recent developments relevant to the looming federal election, mostly involving the Liberals in Victoria:

• House of Representatives Speaker Tony Smith announced this week he would retire from politics at the election, after holding the seat of Casey on Melbourne’s eastern fringe since 2001. Phillip Coorey of the Financial Review reports “leading contenders” for the Liberal preselection are David Lau, a manager with medical supplies company Ebos Group, and Aaron Violi, a manager with a company that provides online ordering services to restaurants. Both have form as political staffers, Lau with Senator Sarah Henderson and Violi with Senator James Patterson. The “controversial comments on Facebook related to abortion” that caused Lau to quit his job with Henderson appear not to have done him any harm with the party membership. Smith retained Casey by a margin of 4.6% in 2019, which has not changed with the redistribution.

• The Victorian Liberals have preselected former Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher for Corangamite, where Labor’s Libby Coker unseated Sarah Henderson in 2019, and lawyer and one-time Survivor contestant Sharn Coombes for Dunkley in Melbourne’s south-east, which Labor gained after a favourable redistribution in 2019. Brodie Cowburn of Bayside News reports other candidates for Dunkley included Chris Crewther, who held the seat for the Liberals from 2016 until his defeat in 2019, and Donna Hope, who as Donna Bauer held the marginal local state seat of Carrum for a term from 2010 to 2014.

• Queensland’s Liberal National party has preselected Colin Boyce, who has held the state seat of Callide since 2017, as its new candidate for the central Queensland seat of Flynn, held for the party on a margin of 8.7% and to be vacated at the election with the retirement of Ken O’Dowd. Matthew Killoran of the Courier-Mail reports Boyce “convincingly” won a local party ballot over Mitchell Brownlie, Ron English and Tracie Newitt.

    It’s the level of obsession that the ‘innocuous’ comment reveals that’s disturbing.

    It’s the absolute crap about me that he tries to fashion into whole cloth that I find creepy. Like, crumbs, really!?! Though it is suggestive of the troll modus operandi of finding the most bizarre bit of information about their target and then attempting to create a furore around it, which then bleeds into an onlooker’s assessment of the person. Such is the motivation behind chipping away at a person’s character.

    *yawn*

    It’s tedious in the extreme but Mr Bowe doesn’t seem to mind it. Though, as Gene Miles reminded us yesterday, it sure does piss a lot of other people off who would otherwise join the blog but for miscreants like nath/Michael/Recon and Edwina St John/Lars von Trier.

    Myself? I’m off too now that I notice the frotage a deux between the two of them has begun again.

    There’s no doubt Dan is a solid performer. I suppose that’s enough for people to fall into ecstasy over it. From what I’ve seen, which is not much, I think the W.A premier is very good, comes across as capable.

    Everyone at the NSW press conference looked as though they were working on day 3 of an influenza infection.

    Perrottet was pouring sweat, Berejiklian had the appearance of someone recently returned from sledding at team of huskies to the north pole and Bruz had the jitters not disimilar to a man who had forgotten to fill his anti-anxiety script at the chemist.

    Looked like blind panic to me.

    Given a score for credibility between the BBC and most anything put out by the any of the Chinese media, you would have to be totally biased if you consider that news from China would not be heavily influenced by the official line of the Communist Party of China.
    Like yourself (or as you tell it) having been to China a few times, and the ‘news’ as such there, is totally missing any independent view of the world.
    An interesting side light to this is that even at Hong Kong airport it is now difficult to get foreign news papers on sale.
    You are on a hiding to nothing if you really do believe there is scintilla of news in China which allows serious criticism of the policies of the CCP or brooks any concession that China should be seen as other than some friendly giant Panda here to help you………

    The only real unknwns with the UK are.

    1. How high does it peak? 150,000? 250,000? (Per day).

    2. How long does it take to burn through the UK population?

    3. Will it generate a new strain?

    Clearly Delta spreads rapidly amongst the non vaccinated, but it will infect a large fraction (most?) of the vaccinated. And since vaccination means a lot more infections will be asymptomatic, they probably won’t (and aren’t) showing on the stats.

    A few months and it’ll all be over, barring a new, nastier strain.

    A lot of deaths yet to come.

    Seriously though, how hopeless is a government that handpicks a bloke to bury a scandal and then has to hide the report from everyone anyway?

    I’m presuming that relates to this:

    The federal government is trying to block the release of Phil Gaetjens’ secret report into the sports rorts affair and Bridget McKenzie by claiming it was prepared mainly for the purposes of cabinet.

    True, that’s why I don’t follow the state media news outlets, including the ones in China. However, the west is in gauged with misinformation overdrive, so ignoring it allows it to continue to do do the bidding of right wing governments.
