Essential Research: Morrison approval and gender issues

A new poll finds an unprecedented gender gap opening up on prime ministerial approval.

Essential Research has seized the day in its latest fortnightly survey with new personal ratings for Scott Morrison, in addition to its normal montly reading (together with Anthony Albanese’s and the preferred prime minister rating) which came in the last poll. The results are broadly similar to Newspoll’s in finding Morrison down five on approval to 57% and up six on disapproval to 35%.

However, the real kicker is the accompanying gender breakdowns, which have Morrison steady at 65% approval and up two on disapproval to 30% among men, but down ten on approval to 49% and up ten on disapproval to 40% among women. This 16% gender gap on prime ministerial approval is twice as big as the Newspoll record from 1996 to the present, which came when Tony Abbott scored 42% among men and 34% among women in January-March 2014 (the biggest the other way was when Julia Gillard scored 38% among women and 31% among men in April-June 2011).

Further questions from the survey continue on this theme: presented with five propositions as to why there are fewer women than men in parliament, the most popular was that “political parties do not do enough to ensure gender equality in their organisations”, with which 63% agreed. Forty-eight per cent indicated support for gender quotas, with 36% opposed. Variations by party support were in the directions you would expect, but were not of great magnitude.

On other fronts, the poll finds respondents taking a mostly positive view of the causalisation of the workforce: while they were most likely to believe it was good for employers, at 65% versus 11% for bad, 46% felt it had been good for the economy, 42% for indivdual workers and 41% for the nation, compared with respective bad ratings of 19%, 29% and 26%. However, 84% expressed support for the right of workers to convert from casual to permanent employment after six months, with only 10% opposed, and 80% felt gig-based workers with regular hours should be recognised with permanent employment, with only 8% opposed.

For good measure, the poll finds 48% supportive for a republic and 28% opposed, although the question emphasises “a republic with an Australian head of state”, which tends to encourage a positive result. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1100.

  1. Sam Newman just isn’t that funny or interesting.

He was a great player but he has admitted to not following the game that closely these days.

  2. I have only the most minute amount of interest in Biden. Must we discuss him all day?

Oh for the blocking facility back.

Please read the White House Jobs plan and how it’s framed.
Use it does not mean do cut and paste.

Just as letting the Greens campaign on a wealth tax does not make the Greens campaign Labor’s campaign.
Pretending the Greens campaign is Labor’s campaign is an LNP trick you and Labor partisans need to stay away from.

The top rate was once 48 cents and society as a whole was poorer. Australia’s inequality is not all bad news because much of it comes from access to education with the educated enjoying growing opportunities while the less educated are becoming poorer and that is where policy makers need to focus their attention.
    ………………………………………
Work opportunities are going to become more stratified as people working from home don’t get recognised for effort and can’t network
    ……………………………………
The jury is still out on the impact of working in an office or from home on career progression and networking but depending on the line of work it might not be as big as some image it will be because most people only focus on their team.

Cat can try taking a break not playing for victim hood.

Cat can do this by not replying to me or using the block function on a temporary basis.

I don’t need to stop my political expression be cause of that.
Especially as Cat posted directly at me.

    Edit:

This is the most callous sounding post I think I have ever had to post. That’s actually good advice in a political blog. I too take breaks when it gets too much. So its not lack of empathy to be clear.

Says the person who yesterday played the victim by accusing every second poster of bullying. 😆

    How was the jab, BW?’

In and out like a yo yo. Quick check list, including the clotting thingies and any allergies, etc.

This particular clinic does 500 jabs on a Sunday.

    No after-effects.

  8. C@t’s not well. Try for a little empathy.

That seems pretty unfair to Guytaur. If C@t doesn’t feel like conversing with Guytaur tonight, she shouldn’t have engaged him in the first place. You don’t get to dish it out, especially not in the way C@t tends to do so, and then say, “No, please don’t argue back, I’m sick.” It doesn’t work that way.

This Easter, don’t forget workers at McCormicks who are seeking their first pay rise in 5 years. Employees’ ability to negotiate pay rises has been decimated by our current laws.

    Who knew!!!

“World Leader” is right up there with “Best in the World” and “Superpower” on my bullshit detection list.

As soon as someone uses any of these terms, you can be pretty sure you are being lied to 🙁

  11. I have never seen such hyperventilation as when the “Block” function here goes tits-up for a day or so. Ditto “Edit” and the “Quote” function.

If you don’t like what someone posts just scroll past it. Can’t be too hard. You might even learn something.

  12. I must say BW, I’ve been thinking about the (almost) coordinated criticism of AZ, amplified by the usual media droogs. The BigPharma are making billions, and can see more billions – if the cheaper shots from AZ are downplayed.

But then they wouldn’t do anything so low rent with people’s health, would they?

  13. I don’t block anyone – as the C+ function doesn’t work on my iPad, which is the only device I use for social media.

I am adept at scrolling past the usual suspects, especially when they are on a long shift insisting on the last word – though sometimes I will read 1 in 10..

  14. lizzie @ #2015 Sunday, April 4th, 2021 – 5:42 pm

There is currently no block function. :sigh:

C+ block function work perfectly well for me with Firefox and Chrome on my desktop machine.

C+ works just as well with Firefox and Kiwi on my android mobile machines.

The problem is that there no mechanism for showing whom you have blocked and no ability to unblock using C+

Goodnight all. Back to the 1940/41 blitz. 📺 SBS TV

I guess just ignoring various posts should work just as well. 😇

    I don’t have anybody blocked.

  15. C@t’s not well. Try for a little empathy.

Don’t remember C@t’s own empathy factor being so high when she was describing runny diarrhoea and uncontrollable vomiting to her enthralled readers here the other night.

There are ways of getting it across that you have severe symptoms that do not involve squirt-by-squirt descriptions.

Challenge with $80 a day isn’t just that you need to lift all pensions, but you also have to tackle EMTRs for part time workers, child care costs, minimum wages & a raft of other issues b/c otherwise anyone working 3 days a week on award wages is better off on the dole. ‍♀️

  17. The mining industry has invited a motley crew to the plush box at Newcastle Stadium (I assume there is one)

Joel FitzGibbon is there with some other Gibbons, namely the thug Mark Latham and Pork Barilaro. Not sure why no ladies got an invite?

  18. KayJay

You are an angel. The problem is that the rest of us aren’t and after a whole day scrolling through so many posts that I don’t want to read, I’ve lost patience.

  19. It’s so interesting to see certain people gush over Joe Biden for being the poster boy for progressive politics and predicting nothing but good fortunes for his party in the immediate future. I vividly remember a time when those same people were calling him a right-wing rapist with dementia who was going to lose big to the other guy.

  20. A very pertinent question

    Ben Schneiders
    @benschneiders
Scientology has made $65m in net profit in Australia since 2013. That’s a margin of 29%; better than many ASX listed companies. Yet it’s a not-for-profit with charitable status.

How does it respond to my reporting?Mountains of distraction and abuse which is telling in itself…

  21. Asha Leu,
Maybe you need an empathy class too!

Jeez, you can’t even be unwell around this joint without heartless contributors saying wtte, suck it up princess, you dish it, so you should take it too! (sick or not), others jumping in and saying, well just don’t reply, and uber heartless contributor guytaur accusing me of playing the victim!
Honestly, I ask for a small consideration under the circumstances and I get gobs of venom in return! Well I hope it made you all feel 10 foot tall and indescribably untainted by hypocrisy as a result. Sheesh!

  22. I wish Mark Latham hadn’t made a name for himself for being so vocally critical of the Iraq War, Bush and Howard, and the Aus-US relationship back in the day. Then he would have been a complete non-entity who is quickly forgotten after he left parliament and his move to the far right (if it still happened) would not have been notable.

I think that a key objective with blogging is to not be obsessive. Living by oneself can be difficult and outlets for mental engagement few. I suppose I’m lucky in that my life objective is to amuse myself – which is difficult in the face of world we are facing.

However, it the only world we have. My plan is to fight off attempts by Mr. Whatsisname who is intent on shaking my hand. Also survive until my next birthday (I remanin unclear why this is important as I don’t celebrate my birthdays.)

Back to SBS TV bombs raining down…..I believe you now something about this.

  24. Cat

I only did one short reply to you on the topic you addressed to me.

My other comment about you was advice others have offered me.

If you are not well or get angry or whatever take a break.
As I was told. Don’t play the victim.

It’s good advice except when dealing with bullies.

Your description of me as being without empathy falls far more easily into the bullying category than my reply to you or Lizzie was.

In the interests of peace I will shutup and leave you in peace.

Mainly because I have been on here long enough by my own measure not yours.

  25. Oh and no show without Punch, aka Bushfire Bill, whose delicate sensibilities apparently don’t extend to redescribing a post I made about midnight the other night when I just returned from hospital still under the influence of the morphine they had to give me.
But blow by blow descriptions of some random woman he’s met and her gangrenous foot, not a problem.

Jeez the hypocrisy in this place runs deep.

  26. RL,

The truth is that Bernie Sanders was actually elected and the Biden pictures we see are Bernie wearing a purpose built lizard suit.

  27. C@tmomma,

Perhaps you may want to take it easy in the recuperation period. I know I can fly off the handle at friends and loved ones when I am on the mend – sometimes we physically heal faster than our temperament takes to be restored.

  28. Vic,
Long story short, my son kissed me on the forehead when he came home from work last Tuesday. He had been dealing with a client, as a Disability Support worker, who had stuck his fingers in his backside then forced them into my son’s mouth. The rest is history. He got the two viruses then I did. We both ended up going to hospital. 🙁

  29. And a question for psephologists amongst us – what are the opinions on how Covid-19 has altered response rates and for which people? With such low response rates to start, even subtle changes may be important.
