Essential Research: Morrison approval and gender issues

A new poll finds an unprecedented gender gap opening up on prime ministerial approval.

Essential Research has seized the day in its latest fortnightly survey with new personal ratings for Scott Morrison, in addition to its normal montly reading (together with Anthony Albanese’s and the preferred prime minister rating) which came in the last poll. The results are broadly similar to Newspoll’s in finding Morrison down five on approval to 57% and up six on disapproval to 35%.

However, the real kicker is the accompanying gender breakdowns, which have Morrison steady at 65% approval and up two on disapproval to 30% among men, but down ten on approval to 49% and up ten on disapproval to 40% among women. This 16% gender gap on prime ministerial approval is twice as big as the Newspoll record from 1996 to the present, which came when Tony Abbott scored 42% among men and 34% among women in January-March 2014 (the biggest the other way was when Julia Gillard scored 38% among women and 31% among men in April-June 2011).

Further questions from the survey continue on this theme: presented with five propositions as to why there are fewer women than men in parliament, the most popular was that “political parties do not do enough to ensure gender equality in their organisations”, with which 63% agreed. Forty-eight per cent indicated support for gender quotas, with 36% opposed. Variations by party support were in the directions you would expect, but were not of great magnitude.

On other fronts, the poll finds respondents taking a mostly positive view of the causalisation of the workforce: while they were most likely to believe it was good for employers, at 65% versus 11% for bad, 46% felt it had been good for the economy, 42% for indivdual workers and 41% for the nation, compared with respective bad ratings of 19%, 29% and 26%. However, 84% expressed support for the right of workers to convert from casual to permanent employment after six months, with only 10% opposed, and 80% felt gig-based workers with regular hours should be recognised with permanent employment, with only 8% opposed.

For good measure, the poll finds 48% supportive for a republic and 28% opposed, although the question emphasises “a republic with an Australian head of state”, which tends to encourage a positive result. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1100.

    I felt sorry for the two Morrison girls on Friday at the Maronite Good Friday church service as, on the brief occasions the ABC camera panned to them, they looked uncomfortable in a situation which was probably very unfamiliar ceremonially to them.

    Wow!

    Was the church St Maroun’s in Redfern?

    A great community church, but with a rite so far away from what those Pentecostal Morrison girls have been educated in, they must have been totally confused.

    Glad to have avoided another apparently long fetid day of the small cabal of Labor stooges talking to themselves… Nothing seems to suggest what a waste of time contemporary Labor is as the stooges of PB pissing in each others pockets, apparently because they are so insecure that going even 10 minutes without boosting each other or rounding on those not part of their bubble has them shaking in fear. Seems like a bad case status anxiety to need so much shallow reinforcement daily and repeatedly.

    One of the lovely things about moving from Sydney to the Mid North Coast (and, I suspect, to almost anywhere in the regions) is that the local dogs make their own rules in the time-honoured way: by jumping the fence first thing in the morning after brekkie, establishing a dominance order soon after, cutting through friendly neighbours’ backyards and forming up into friendly gatherings at the house of any mug (like me) who’ll have them on the deck or in the house, and toss some kibble or (even better) Person Food their way every now and again.

    One barks across the valley, and the dogs on the other side bark in unison. We also get Dog Opera, where one starts howling and pretty soon the district is full of hounds, yodelling in response – basso profundos, coloraturas, tenors, contraltos, and of course a good sprinkling of castrati.

    I have a Jack Russell asleep on my lap now. She’s from two streets away. God knows what the story is, but I suspect she’s had some kind of doggy adventure that she can’t tell me about just yet.

    Pretty sure it was not St Marouns. I think the news report said it was the Maronite church in Auburn, but I only had half each of an ear and eye on the television at the time as I was busy in the kitchen.

    Edit: just did a bit of Googling. Church was the Maronite one in Punchbowl.

    Thanks EGT. For what it’s worth I am a macrophage fan from way back – but prefer them in their APC/DC capacity. Bloody B cells. Peter Medawar has a lot to answer for – he always favoured humoral immunity over cellular…(snork).

    The catchcry of the Morrison PM LNP Government which sometimes sits in the building designed for an open, transparent and subservient government.
    A health Minister reassuring an electorate no longer possessing an appetite to accept a reassurance from a government which has become so bunkered away, hiding, determinedly avoiding scrutiny.
    The latest ministerial alterations, a veneer of purpose from a Morrison PM LNP Government so obviously not fit for purpose.
    Enough of the electorate has more than likely made a judgement, admitting the error of allowing the accident to occur at the last election.
    Most of Morrison PM’s own government showing a determination to avoid any association with the utterances of the bumbling accident, all possessing the frightened look of a herd destined for the meat works.
    The Morrison PM LNP Government is crook and dishonest.
    With luck they will remain sitting in the government benches entirely dependent on a disengaged and disenchanted electorate, ignoring the foul stench of dishonesty and incompetence, increasingly emanating with every passing day.
    As someone said to me this week, a liberal supporter, one of the silent mass, in regard to the vaccine,

    As far as I can tell patients with hematological cancers are still treated as 1b in relation to vaccination, and would thus be in the position of seeking out AZ from a GP (not their own) whenever/wherever someone from the Commonwealth sees fits to dump a load. They would then be in the 12 week window and (per SOAP-2) not protected at all until they get the second dose.

    This does not seem reasonable

    The Morrison government doesn’t engage in the practicalities of process, together with nil self assessment of the announcements.
    The vaccine announcements represent a debacle on so many levels, each announcement is “brass necked” and a gutless press refusing to engage with a blatantly deceitful government.

    By the time mRNA vaccines became a reality it may have been too late to set up facilities soon enough to be of much use for covid-19 here in Aus.. Remember exactly 0 mRNA vaccines had been used successfully before so putting eggs into AZ basket was at the time the safest way to go.
