ReachTEL: 53-47 to Coalition; Galaxy 51-49

An automated phone poll conducted today supports the broader polling picture of ongoing drift away from Labor, although a new Galaxy poll is somewhat more hopeful for them.

A ReachTEL automated phone poll has the Coalition’s lead at 53-47 up from 52-48 last week, from primary votes of 36.9% for Labor (down 0.6%), 46.9% for the Coalition (up 1.2%) and 8.9 for the Greens (down 0.7%). On the all-inclusive preferred prime minister rating, Tony Abbott leads Kevin Rudd 53-47, up from 50.9-49.1 in the poll conducted on Sunday immediately after the election was called.

UPDATE: And now another Galaxy poll, this time national, and slightly better for Labor than other recent results. The Labor primary vote is at 38%, down two on the last national Galaxy result of a fortnight ago, with the Coalition and the Greens each up one to 45% and 10%. On two-party preferred the Coalition leads 51-49, compared with 50-50 last time. Kevin Rudd maintains a handy 47-34 lead over Tony Abbott as preferred prime minister, although it’s down from 51-34. There are also questions on the respective leaders’ greatest weaknesses which you can see here. The poll was conducted from Wednesday to Friday from a sample of 1002.

TODAY SHOW HOST (To Ray Martin): Who sabotaged the Channel Nine broadcast last night?

RAY MARTIN, CHANNEL NINE: Well, the National Press Club were controlling the broadcast, but clearly the sabotage, the instructions came from the Liberal Party.

JOHN HOWARD: The decision about the feed was taken by the National Press Club.

[Gawd now we have NoteGate because Rudd allegedly used notes which is not Kosher. ]

Gillard didn’t use notes. Rudd couldn’t match it.

  3. It is pretty clear the coalition troops were dowmloading the ch seven app and not blogging tonight! Judging by the Fairfax poll, they are voting there in large numbers too.

I thought Rudd genuinely won the debate, but those “pundits” who are owned by media barons were pretty clearly doing their masters’ bidding immediately following the debate.

  4. [Abbott does not need notes because he had nothing to say that he hasn’t said a thousand times before.]

As opposed to Rudd who talked about lots of new stuff, like the GST scare campaign and the so called $70 Billion budget black hole and that he had “cut the carbon tax”!

  5. @davidwh/1507

Saw a pick of Rudd reading before the debate – doubt he would have taken them in (on his twitter feed).

    @Mod Lib/1508

This is from the Party that is wanting to get to Surplus as soon as possible?

  6. The debate is done and dusted now. I agree with whoever it was who said the govt needs to move onto positive stuff now. No more bitching and moaning about Murdoch and complaining about the media coverage.

  7. Ahhh if note gate is an issue for the murdoch press then it’s clear they are getting feedback that Rudd won the debate.

  8. Laocoon I can’t remember much about 1961 except my grandfather had another scotch or 2 because ‘that bugger Menzies has won again’.

It was my g/father’s last election.

  9. So sportsbet have labor now at 5.00 from 4.80. Abbott made light work of K Rudd in the debate. Bets are coming in for coalition now!

61-39 to Rudd (Ten), 59-41 to Rudd (Nine), 68-32 to Abbott (Seven), 71-29 to Rudd (ABC) -> Channel 7 Hello? Any comments?]

who was the bookmaker promoting the Ch7 self selecting worm app?

  11. As an SA resident I agree with triton and others on the virtues of Shiraz, especially ours. But I would like to highlight another SA gem. Lately I have been drinking a few Clare Valley Cabernets I have put away for a few years. Beautiful! Skillogalee, Crabtree, O’Leary Walker, Leasingham Classic Clare and Jim Barry have all been great. When mature (8+) they are as full flavoured as Barossa Shiraz, but lighter.

  12. A good night for Rudd: considered to have won the debate everywhere except ch 7, and marriage equality will resonate and hopefully get a bunch of young people enrolling by th deadline on Monday 8pm.

But certainly no knockouts – lot of work to do. More a momentum arrest for the LNP, I suspect.

  14. Interestingly, in that handshake, Rudd’s hand is slightly on top of Abbott’s and looks to be pressing down.

  15. FWIW, I pretty much predicted the outcome earlier today.

This is why you don’t hassle someone over debates too much. You end up setting the bar so low for the person holding out.

How will you incorporate these into your projections?

Yes, I suppose I should declare that I have no financial interest in betting agencies, not even shares…..

  19. Sprocket: Howard lost a multitude of debates and still got re-elected. You are clutching your straws. Get over it and accept that it’s OVER!

  20. Thanks for the handshake pic. ROTFL. So much for Laurie Oakes miserable line that Abbott “won on style”. Abbott is the same physical bully he has been all his life. An aweful choice for PM.

what’s the betting on the Murdoch media reporting the channel 7 results, and abc report a ‘mixed’/’undecided’ outcome on the basis of this? I note menzies house is stacking on-line polling at fairfax – after rudd started strongly when the poll opened, suddenly it has swung to abbott. rudd must have won becuase the murdoch papers are saying it was close and are yet to have on-line polls. they’ll not put these up until tomorrow once they have done the articles telling people how to vote.
