Newspoll: 58-42

The latest fortnightly Newspoll shows no change from Labor’s towering 58-42 lead from the last survey. Kevin Rudd’s preferred prime minister rating is up two points to 64 per cent, while Malcolm Turnbull’s is steady on 20 per cent. More to follow. (UPDATE: Graphic here.)

Also today, Essential Research has Labor’s lead at 62-38 in its weekly survey, up from 61-39 last time. The poll also features results on views of the economy (nervous), support for federal control over primary health care (overwhelming), Rudd versus Costello as well as Turnbull, and – interestingly – how respondents would feel about an early election if the Opposition continued to oppose financial measures (38 per cent good, 34 per cent not good).

  1. From Western Ethics:

“Dressed only in a cloak, he slept in a tub (or jar) and ate only the simplest of foods. Once, after observing a child drink from its cupped hand, Diogenes threw away his cup, saying that it was clearly not essential to life.”

    (I was paraphrasing.)

  2. [Is the new Turnbull-Brown love in on ETS a re-run of the old Howie-Costello love in just before the last election?]

It will last about 10 minutes I reckon

  3. [Is the new Turnbull-Brown love in on ETS a re-run of the old Howie-Costello love in just before the last election?]
Did you watch The 7:30 Report? Christine Milne basically said she doesn’t trust Turnbull on the issue.

  4. No-one trusts Turnbull on any issue, and certainly and certainly not on this issue. Everyone knows Turnbull is just an opportunist desperately thrashing around looking for a momentary tactical advantage. If anyone was watching Senate estimates today they would have seen the Coalition’s real views – deep and cynical climate denialism from Abetz, Boswell and others.

  5. [Turnbull’s numbers will improve as the economy gets worse.]

Wishful thinking? There’s a strong possibility that support for Labor will increase if things get worse.

  6. Nelson forever Turnbull Never lol!

cmon guys Rudd is giving cash out left right and centre so no wonder he is still top dog…but will they still be with him when all the cash runs out?

  7. Bill Shorten impresses me, he was on ABC radio this afternoon in Sydney, talking about the disabled. Looking forward to watching him on Q&A this week.

    He’s soiled his own nest

  9. Check out the “Adds by Google” at the bottom of this article. This is a good indication that business is getting geared up for an ets scheme not a carbon tax.

[MALCOLM Turnbull has stepped up his attacks on the structure of the Government’s planned carbon reduction scheme, claiming he could slash greenhouse gas emissions by a further 150 million tonnes.
The Opposition Leader is attempting to trump the Prime Minister and take the offensive after a week of damaging internal strife by going on the front foot over climate change.

“We are committed to a more ambitious target and a more effective climate change policy,” Mr Turnbull said.

“Labor’s current model appears too costly, too complex and it is ineffectual in terms of cutting emissions.”

Mr Turnbull said the extra 150 million tonnes in emission reductions could come “at relatively low cost”.

“The objective is to reduce emissions, not to have an ETS,” he told ABC Radio. ]

  10. [My god, Robb couldn’t debate a wet blanket]

#12 – i said before Robb makes Frank Sartor looks like Kylie Minogue. Robb Vs Wong, no contest.

  11. I listened to Wong on the 7.30 Report and the Labor parties agenda regarding climate change policy, more humbug and more policy as it is. What we will have is another inquiry and another nothing… And now i listened to Robb on Lateline, nearly fell asleep.. He should be leader what charisma! Another do nothing policy agenda..
We might as well admit it, the planet is dead.. Simple. Time for action is now. Not 2020 not 2010, the planet is heating up, droughts , storms, rainfall lots of it all at once.
Remember carbon stays in the atmosphere it does not dissappear, it stays their and we are continuing to add to it every day. Whilst the ice melts, it gets hotter and food becomes scarcier as we seen already due to a heatwave in Victoria with food drieing up and shrivelling we will go with it.

  12. [Dario, Shorten’s private life shouldn’t be an issue, marriages break up all the time, politicians aren’t quarantined.]

    “Shouldn’t” being the operative word

  13. AIC told me to settle down on the previous thread, on account of very worrying reports coming from local ABC on the fires. Do people here want to know, or am I just being redundant?

  14. The Greens should ask people to donate money to a fund so they can buy carbon pollution permits. Then they should buy them to inflate the price, but not actually use them to pollute. 😀

  15. [Robb says we need to look at energy efficiency, yet his political party voted against free ceiling insulation.]

Shhh… they were hoping noone would notice…

  16. [The Greens should ask people to donate money to a fund so they can buy carbon pollution permits. Then they should buy them to inflate the price, but not actually use them to pollute]

That’s actually a very, very good idea

  17. [Okay then. Answer this. Does Turnbull have better economic knowledge than Costello?]
No. They have the same failed economic theory – cut taxes at all costs; irrespective of the domestic and international economic circumstances.

  18. Maybe. Costello has never been subjected to the ultimate test i.e. scrutiny in parliament without treasury briefings. He appears to be a light weight and his failure to step up only confirms that to many people

  19. I don’t understand how a carbon tax would be better. Doesn’t that mean industries could pollute as much as they want, so long as it is profitable for them to keep doing so while paying the tax?

At least a trading scheme means there is a finite amount of permits so the more one company pollutes, the more expensive it makes the price of the permits (via supply and demand)

  20. Harry the last news report I heard said that a house and 2 firetrucks had been burnt and a couple of firefighters injured. must admit that was a couple of hours ago though.

  21. Turnbull has had real-life experience of economic life as a banker. Costello was a smarty-pants young lawyer who went into Parliament at 33. I would say Turnbull has better economic credentials, despite Costello’s eleven years as Treasurer.

  22. [I don’t understand how a carbon tax would be better. Doesn’t that mean industries could pollute as much as they want, so long as it is profitable for them to keep doing so while paying the tax?]

Exactly, and that’s why even the Greens won’t touch it

  23. HSO,

I’ve got friends at Bullato Sth and Sailors Falls, so between times lurking here I’m onto the ABC for updates, I don’t think your comments are redundant, but the ‘life is politics and all else is shit’ crew may be bored by life and death that hasn’t got a dispatch box in the foreground – uck em – keep posting on the human condition HSO,

  24. Bullbutter to you too. Has Costello failed to step up? Yes. Did he have the full support of treasury when in Govt? Yes. Did he have a one-eyed speaker who allowed him to strut his stuff as though he was the local tough guy? Yes. Is he actually a wimp. Yes

His actions speak louder than his words. I rest my case.

  25. Your joking Glen or cluching at straws,Howard and Costello where the best pair of hand out merchants going,I think they call it churn in pay TV terms, there was never an interest group that Howard would not throw money at,Costello did nothing just stood by and watched,a Gutless Coward is about the best description of Costello.
I think you bree and GG are in fantasy land,if the Liberals are stupid enough to elect the man who denied Pensioners anything for 11yrs they either have rocks in there heads or think we have short memory’s.
Hockey was Mr Serfchoices and he will wear that like a crown of thorns as long as he is in Parliament,Hockey is an Frat Boy a fool and a dunce, and is as thick as to planks to boot
