Federal election minus whatever

A new venue for general discussion of matters political, as the New South Wales election sucks the oxygen from the federal sphere.

Reflecting its confidence about its prospects in Victoria, Labor has traded in its existing prospect for the seat of Higgins, Josh Spiegel, for a higher profile model in the shape of barrister Fiona McLeod. That’s all I really have to relate at the moment, but a new federal politics and general discussion thread is required, and here it is. Note the new Brexit post from Adrian Beaumont below this one and, naturally, the latest New South Wales election post above.

    I’m actually shook I haven’t been trolled before, @taylaharriss

  2. The DoJ has a firm policy it will not indict a sitting president, and people in the Mueller cult seem to forget his is a thoroughly conservative guy, decent and honorable it seems, but thoroughly conservative.

  3. Can somebody explain the fuss around a girl kicking a football. I’m not getting its significance.

In a week where NZ shone as a thoughtful and compassionate society Australia concentrated on protecting nazis from political protest, making sure that the overton window did not move an inch away from our entrenched racism and islamaphobia, and a week of evil and hate wouldn’t be complete without a large group of Australian males showing they shouldn’t be allowed oxygen by having a disgusting sexist go at a successful woman doing her job. Oh and of course our media shone (obviously excluding the Project who did ok) by doubling down on islamaphobia and hate, and leading the pack Channel 7 took down the picture rather than deal with the scum trolling it.

We are just a shit country and never have we looked more shit than we did this week.

  4. GG: Teddy Whitten did it first.

But not as well – note how his leg is way below his head. Men’s kicking is more clunky. Women excel at ballet and gymnastics.

The fuss, as I (don’t) understand it, is because, instead of applauding the athletic and gorgeous young woman in full flight – the Great Orstrayan Dickhead has revealed himself in all his glory with lewd and contemptible comments causing the photo to be first removed and then reposted.

Just for the moment – we have a way to go before we reach the exalted level of shit.

I think I may be just a tad pissed off. Probably need some remedial lawn mowing.

Well I’m going to make a vegan lasagna, just to help rebalance the universe, obviously I’ll also make a vegetarian one with real cheese and milk for me to eat, vegan cheese is the worst.

  7. Bill Shorten brings Mark McGowan into federal sphere for Labor’s election campaign:

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-03-23/labor-leader-bill-shortens-wa-visit-mark-mcgowan-prominent/10929390

For anyone who paid even one second of attention to Bill Shorten’s Perth trip this week, the imagery Labor wanted people to see was virtually impossible to miss.

It was much less about what Mr Shorten was doing than who the Opposition Leader was doing it with.

Labor is bringing WA Premier Mark McGowan into the federal sphere. And it wants to do it in a big way.

  8. That’s right, there have never been any male Ballet dancers, has there?

There is nothing worse, you go to a lovely ballet and then this guy comes on the stage, and first time I was so shocked I booed, but tip for new players ballet crowds get very cross when you boo.

That, and also the fact that his overlings are all Trump’s lackeys at this point.

To you a Gold Koala with embossed Diamonds for your dedication to whatever it is that you are dedicated to (or something).

I watch a movie on SBS last night- Their Finest which I enjoyed except for the almost obligatory end of the budding romance with the death of one of the lovers – great performance from Bill Nighy. I think I could get to hate Bill – not only is he a really good actor but he sings very well – the bastard.

What did he sing The Wild Mountain Thyme

    and so –

    Chorus:

    Will ye go lassie go?
    And we’ll all go together
    To pull wild mountain thyme
    All around the bloomin’ heather
    Will ye go lassie go?

    Au revoir.

Especially when he roosts a seventy metre torpedo punt in to the audience as Teddy used to!

  12. I wonder if he will be prissy too….

“Christopher Pyne’s long-time campaign manager has been preselected for the Liberal Party in the South Australian seat of Sturt.

James Stevens, aligned to Mr Pyne’s moderate faction, this morning defeated conservative candidates Joanna Andrew and Deepa Mathew in a vote at The Ellington function centre in the up-market Adelaide suburb of Hackney.”

  13. The Gs should listen to Wong. She’s trying to tell them something. The Gs imagine they draw Labor closer to the G position on issues. Wong is making it clear that Labor just ignore the Gs. Rather than attracting Labor, the Gs repel Labor.

The G campaign against Labor is having the very predictable result of driving Labor away. Wong has said as much.

  14. PvO on Bill Shorten’s government, assuming the coalition is defeated in May.

Finally, Team Shorten will be a new-look government for this country. Yes, there will be many familiar faces, ministers who Labor will hope have learned from the failures of the previous Labor government; who come into government better prepared this time, with more experience. It’s not entirely analogous but the circumstances are similar to the way the new team of Bob Hawke came into government in 1983, having learned from the failures of Gough Whitlam’s administration.

But there also are new names who will take important seats at the table. Shorten has pledged to install former NSW premier Kristina Keneally into cabinet, as well as the father of reconciliation, Pat Dodson.

The diversity of Shorten’s cabinet will be unmatched in Australian history, and his government will be the first in this country’s history to be genuinely reflective of the gender balance in the population — half men, half women — and with more powerful female decision-makers in frontbench ranks than ever.

  15. On ballet – I heard on ABC radio last week a discussion with an American surgeon expert regarding hip joint ‘resurfacing’ and ‘replacement’ as it applied to Andy Murray.

He was more or less saying that he thought the twisting and turning and impacts in tennis training and matches would make it inadvisable for Murray to return to high level competition. He said some of his patients were able to return to things like cycling and I think rowing. American Football was bad, but he said that Ballet was the worst in putting strain on the hip joint.

  16. LR, copy and send it anywhere you like.

I agree, a lot of what he says resonates for me wrt our system(s). The broken contract especially.

  17. LR, I forgot to add that it’s almost ironic that a comedian is able to explain the political quagmire better than any ‘straight’ commentator.

But then again I learn more from our cartoonists, other than Zanetti, than any of the other journalists in BK’s morning post.

  18. ON policies include the official persecution of a religious group. It is unbelievable that the leader of the Liberals is unable to unequivocally reject ON; to unequivocally declare they will place them last on HTVs everywhere. Morrison is effectively saying the LNP are prepared to support a renegade party that advocates religious and racial bigotry as matters of policy.

  19. briefly

Morrison and the Coalition really have not learnt from those Queensland and WA elections. They will be dogged by decisions to preference ON every day until election day. And then they will face their own intra-party recriminations afterwards. All in all, about as good as any of Baldrick’s “Cunning Plans”.

Labors gravitational shift to the right is natural.

    The support of OSB.

    The propping up of coal.

    The waste on defence.

The reluctance to properly fund newstart.

    …and other policy positions.

They have nothing to do with the Greens repelling Labor.

  21. IoM: ‘I for one agree that Penny Wong shouldnt be using the term “virtual signalling”.’

Assuming you mean ‘virtue signalling’, then quite the opposite – whenever RWNJs promulgate a term, one should adopt it with enthusiasm, and coopt its use.

Language, like reality, is biased to the left – use it or lose it!
