Newspoll: 56-44 to Coalition in NSW

Nine months on from his re-election, Newspoll finds Mike Baird maintaining his dominance in New South Wales.

Now it’s the turn of New South Wales to get the Newspoll treatment, but this one is different from the recent small-state polls in that we have a previous Galaxy-conducted Newspoll result to compare it with. It so happens that it shows essentially no change on the August-September result, with the Coalition up a point to 48%, Labor steady on 33%, the Greens down one to 10%, and two-party preferred unchanged at 56-44. Mike Baird’s approval ratings are little changed, at 61% approve (down two) and 22% disapprove (down one), but Luke Foley has taken a knock, down four on approval to 31% and up two on disapproval to 39%. Baird’s lead as preferred premier is up from 57-19 to 58-15. The poll was conducted from a sample of 1457 respondents in November and December.

  1. It is interesting how in NSW there are long periods where there is no real political contest. Think Wran and Bob Carr versus numerous lib leaders and Baurd now.

  2. At least Foley and Shorten have got something in common they can chat about – “How’s your14%?” “Great, thanks – how’s yours?”

Most voters seem pretty content with their current state leaders, according to Essential.

Last year’s intrigue in Canberra and contentious elections on a state level have given way to a wave of political contentment across Australia’s most populous states.

Newly released aggregate figures of Essential polling conducted between October to December last year shows that in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia, voters are, on a two-party preferred basis, content with their political rulers.

In New South Wales, Premier Mike Baird is riding high, having improved his polling even on the already impressive 54.3% of the vote the Liberals secured in the March 2015 election. The Liberals, according to Essential, now command a 56%-44% two-party preferred lead over the Labor opposition, a figure that has remained steady during all three months of polling aggregated by Essential.]
