Highlights of day three

A happy ending for Labor in its candidate crisis in Dobell, but the betting markets continue to move against them.

With 30 days to go:

• Labor has resolved its preselection difficulty in Dobell by recruiting Emma McBride, a former Wyong councillor and head of pharmacy at Wyong Hospital. McBride is the daughter of Grant McBride, who held the local state electorate of The Entrance from 1992 to 2011. She had initially been a candidate for the original preselection process which had lately hit a brick wall with the non-ratification of Trevor Drake’s endorsement, but announced her withdrawal in May. It evidently took some strong persuasion by party administration to get her back on board.

• Centrebet has hiked the payout on a Labor victory from $4 to $4.80, with the Coalition in from $1.25 to $1.18, and there is now $4.80 to be had on a Labor win from Betfair against $1.26 for the Coalition. Sportsbet and Tom Waterhouse continue to offer $4 on Labor. Sportsbet has lengthened Labor’s odds in Petrie, Moreton and Parramatta but shortened them in Dobell, presumably on the back of McBride’s endorsement. Labor is now paying $2.50 in Dobell and the Coalition $1.50, compared with $3.50 and $1.25 at the start of the week.

  1. The highlight for me from yesterday was the photo at Bickford’s cordial factory of Abbott kissing a woman on the head, from behind, while she was in mid-conversation with someone else.

And when I say “highlight”, I mean NOT.

It is exactly this sort of thing that creeps women out. Many men don’t see it, but we do, and no amount of “Margie and the girls” can erase the damage this sort of thing does.

  2. More Hockeynomics

[AN Abbott government would save millions by stopping federal and state public servants from double dipping on maternity leave to offset the cost of its scheme, which would pay up to $75,000 for six months.

The policy, to be unveiled next week, would abolish paid parental leave schemes in the commonwealth public service costing up to $100 million.]

It would save nothing because the 1.5% levy does not cover the full cost of the scheme, so the Commonwealth will still pay.

Or is this a cut to working conditions Tony?

  3. Yes Danny it sure looks creepy. For a leader with issues with support of women it could be damaging- Latham hand shake kind of damaging- if it got alot of publicity.

Surely the DT is a total joke? Beat up doesn’t even come close.

  4. “I’d like to have a beer with Thomson, because Thomson’s my mate”.

What a kfuffle the DPM has got Labor into lol, the daily terro is going all stalag 13 in the paper today.

  5. He didn’t really kiss that woman on the hair. The Project had footage last night from a different angle. He was just behind her when she turned her head, and it brushed his face as the photo was taken from the other side.

Oh, please! He had puckered lips IN the woman’s hair!

    Here is the picture:

I have no doubt a number of photos were taken, from different angles, over the course of his time with this woman, but there is no mistake about what his lips were doing on this occasion, nor does it change the infringement of her personal space (from behind, which makes it even creepier).

  8. I think Rudd usually performs very, very well in media interviews. Not so 7.30 last night.

Get some sleep Kevvie, or have a Snickers before interviews. Because you’re not yourself when you’re hungry.

On the campaigning front, I can only hope that Labor’s performance this first week is part of some elaborate “rope-a-dope” strategy…early momentum to the Coalition at this point I would say, but it’s a marathon not a sprint…

@BreakfastNews Yes I do believe this, what deal has been done between #Abbott and #Murdoch? #Austvotes. I won’t be buying any Murdoch papers

  12. Funny isn’t it….. you know the comparison …. who is planning for the future and who is stuck back in the Howard Cunningham Happy Days times.

Sloganman goes around gripping his many glossy pamphlets like a kid at a schools show and tell and Our Kevvie what’s he hold up yesterday ……. an ipad

THATS why most woman turn off the tv or look the other way

when we girls where growing up say 16 plus we may have said to our mums ‘ he gives me the creeps’ talking about some boy they may have mentioned, mothers words back where really

    we know what we mean,

Fair enough. I can’t find the other footage anyway, and if it helps make Abbott look bad, so much the better. 🙂

Thanks for the link to the Abbott kiss. I had missed it yesterday. He treats women like pets he is fond of, not adults of equal tanding.

  17. rox on that we very much agree

an apolgies for jumping in yesterday.

well have to baby sit up the top of lenah valley it one degree and have to drive so better go

  18. I saw the Abbott hair-kissing video on The Project. Sorry, it doesn’t make things any better for Tony. Abbott was standing far too close to the woman, he seems to have a thing about invading another’s personal space. If the young woman hadn’t suddenly turned away he would have planted that kiss on her face.

  19. I am so proud of Kevin and taking on Murdoch

and as for lasts interview re the above comment

this kev is more measured kev and want be phased or put off by some abc person who after all is only
and interviewer and will be just a ship in the night

    with our future memory

  20. the abc now want us to join in a poll re

wtee is Murdoch ect re the election ect wtte

bloody hell what right have they got to have a poll on that

I will tweet them not engage in their
    little games

  21. This is good news for the boat policy change.
[Tough policies preventing settlement in Australia appear to be deterring asylum seekers, with signs of boat arrivals tapering off and reports of people demanding refunds from people smugglers.
Immigration Minister Tony Burke said on Wednesday that large numbers of asylum seekers who had paid upfront for passage to Australia were demanding their money back from smugglers.]
    http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/federal-politics/federal-election-2013/dropoff-in-boat-arrivals-20130807-2rgur.html#ixzz2bJytb9qF

Pretty clearly this shows what I argued recently – that for most arrivals now, it is about money. Moslem refugees are not persecuted in Indonesia. If you were being persecuted, you wold still risk the trip. Of course, they are not persecuted in UNHRC funded camps in Iran or Pakistan in the first place.

I understand that many of the current group on Nauru are not Hazaras but Iranians, coached on what to say to qualify for refugee status. The ringleader of the riot that saw the new, more humane, accommodation facility deliberately burnt down soon after completion is apparently also Iranian. At this point we must acknowledge that our previous system was being manipulated.

  22. morning all

Caroline Wilson makes a good point about Essendon’s attitude. I am also wondering if the tweet from the obscure journo last night had any truth to it re James Hird standing down today.

  23. my say

Rudd has gone in fairly strongly on the Murdoch and Abbott angle re NBN. Question is does Rudd have some tangible information that a deal has in fact been done between Abbott and Murdoch re the NBN?

  24. Re Abbott invading the space of the young mum and her child. My daughters saw that last night. Both exclaimed at the same time. “What a creep!”

  25. Good morning, Dawn Patrol.

Just getting in before 8.00am mayhem.

Thanks to those who posted above. Much appreciated.

Seems like Fairfax, at least, will continue to hold the Opposition, NewsCorp & Murdoch to account. After years; well overdue. Today’s DY page is the best reason I know for never voting the way Murdoch demands we, his OzSerfs, do. Shouldn’t it have been Godwin’d?

After 4 years, a typical Toowoomba winter’s day: brilliant sunshine, cobalt skies & howling wind from a cold hell.

  26. Can some kind soul dig up the film of Murdoch, Murdochs son and darling Rebecca when good old Rupes first went to the UK to defend Bec.

If i remember correctly when questioned by reporters Rupes said something along the lines of “This is the one we have got to look after” as he walked in with her.

  27. [Rudd has gone in fairly strongly on the Murdoch and Abbott angle re NBN. Question is does Rudd have some tangible information that a deal has in fact been done between Abbott and Murdoch re the NBN?]

My question: Is the Abbott/ Murdoch link what Tony Windsor has recorded on his iPhone? A good bribe/ job offer, perhaps?

  28. Fran Kelly’s amateur journo skills were on display this morning.

She did an I/V with Proff Paul Davies, a a physics expert cum philosopher. He is currently doing work for the USA Cancer Association …… a thinking outside the box search for what cancer actually is.

One of the things he said was that the genes involved were very fundamental to the species and that we all have them. He then said that they are the same genes which are VIP in embryonic development, and in wound healing.

Kelly’s very next question was “well are there any good aspects to these terrible genes?”

What a loser …… she can ask questions but can’t hear the answers.

  29. This criticism of Abbott’s rubbery numbers from business execs is more telling than anything Rudd could say:
[Heather Ridout, a board member of the Reserve Bank and also a member of the Henry Tax Review panel, said lower corporate taxes help attract investment.
‘‘This is the Henry argument, we needed to make it much more attractive for overseas investment to come into the industries that were being punished by a dollar at parity.
‘‘The gains from corporate tax reduction are much more for bigger companies, and particularly for foreign-owned ones.’’]
    http://www.theage.com.au/money/tax/top-executives-wary-of-tax-cut-costs-20130807-2rgxa.html#ixzz2bK7YMgPZ

Note who Rideout sys mainly wins from the tax change. In the article various excs question the affordability of the Abbott plan. They point out Henry only said to shift the company tax rte when we could afford it.

Can’t find the word; but this video, which went viral, deserved to do so again in OZ, as it reveals the genesis of what’s happening now in Oz with the DT.

Plenty of footage of Rupe & Bekks together. BTW: also references to Rupert’s role in toppling Gordon Brown (+ Boatful post-election front page claiming Rupe got Brown& Labour + plans for getting all of BSkyB off the Tories he helped into power.

  31. Business groups aren’t exactly jumping for joy at the opposition’s pledge to lower company tax yesterday.

[Business groups have offered only a muted welcome to Tony Abbott’s promised 1.5-percentage point cut to the company tax rate, still alarmed by an identically-sized levy on big companies to pay for his “excessive” paid parental leave scheme.]

[But ACCI chief executive Peter Anderson said the tax cut would not help microbusinesses or unincorporated sole traders, who pay income rather than company tax.

“And for the very large businesses, this looks like an offsetting tax cut to the coalition proposals to fund its paid parental leave scheme by a company tax rise of equal magnitude,” Mr Anderson said.

“We don’t agree with that approach and consider it to be an excessive parental leave scheme.”]

[But Mr Shepherd again registered his “concern” about Mr Abbott’s PPL scheme which would give parents six months leave at full pay, capped at $75,000.]
    http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/newshome/18405131/abbot-tax-cut-gets-muted-support/

  32. [The Barnett Government will borrow billions of dollars to build big-ticket road and rail transport projects in a tax-and-spend State Budget to be delivered by Treasurer Troy Buswell today.

The Budget will formally commit the Government to its “big three” transport projects promised during this year’s election campaign — the $2 billion airport rail line, the $1.9 billion MAX light-rail system and the $845 million Swan Valley bypass road dubbed as the Perth-Darwin Highway — with each to begin construction in 2016.]
    http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/newshome/18405159/budget-debt-binge/

Borrowing money would be sneered at by the federal Liberals, even with The Emperor’s government using the money to build much-needed transport infrastructure in parts of the state.

All I can is about time there is some infrastructure spending in the south of the state other than on football stadiums and grandiose plans for the Swan River foreshore.

  33. RBA board member Roger Corbett was on Fran this morning and he said the company tax cut is a bad idea because we can’t afford it. He says we need more revenue, not less, to pay for NDIS etc., and Abbott needs to show how he’ll pay for the tax cut.

  34. Certainly the Daily Telegraph has abandoned any pretense of providing balanced coverage of the election and Australia politics generally. It has no more credibility than one of the party political leaflets that are being stuffed into our letterboxes at the moment. It would be interesting to see what happens to its circulation figures. There must be lots of people who don’t want to pay for political propaganda, even if it supports who they were going to vote for anyway.

I think a lot of people buy it for the sports coverage. I don’t follow sports closely, but if I did I’d question the credibility of that coverage. For example, doesn’t News Corp own the NRL and half the teams, as well as the pay TV network that broadcasts most of the games?

  35. Yes, cw.

  36. Morning all

I like Rudd’s approach of taking Rupert on – don’t over-play it but ask the appropriate questions on why he is backing Abbott. The NBN being the obvious one

I think this kiss beats yesterday’s one – don’t look if you are having breakfast!!!

Hird’s last day as coach??? Surely him going is part of any plea bargain trying to save the players

wow – Peter Beattie running in Forde as suggested on AM
