Wagga Wagga is an elongated electorate running west to east through the shires of Lockhart, Wagga Wagga and Tumut, and has been essentially unchanged by the latest redistribution. The seat has had a continued existence going back to 1927, changing hands from Country Party to Labor in 1941, and Labor to Liberal in 1957. The Nationals fielded a candidate in 1999 upon the retirement of the previous member, Joe Schipp, and recorded 22.9% on the primary vote to the Liberals’ 25.4%, coming with 398 votes of leading at the crucial point in the count. However, the seat was ultimately retained for the Liberals by Daryl Maguire, who had previously been chairman of the Wagga Wagga Chamber of Commerce. Maguire has remained a back-bencher ever since, although he has served as opposition and then government whip since 2003.
