Yuroke is located in Melbourne’s outer north, extending from Attwood and Greenvale through to Craigieburn at the metropolitan outskirts, along with semi-rural territory to the west and north. Craigieburn in particular is home to rapidly expanding housing estates, contributing the electorate’s demographic distinctions of having the highest proportion of family households of any electorate in the state, the second most mortgage-paying households, and the lowest median age of any electorate other than Melbourne. Reflecting the area’s growth, the redistribution causes it to lose 13,000 voters to the new seat of Sunbury to the west, encompassing Melbourne Airport, Tullamarine and Gladstone Park at the southern end of the old electorate, with no corresponding gain. The change has little impact on the Labor margin, which increases from 15.3% to 16.0%.
The electorate was created in 2002 upon the abolition of Tullamarine, which extended north-westwards to Sunbury and was considerably more marginal. Combative radio personality Bernie Finn won Tullamarine for the Liberals upon its creation at the 1992 election and increased his margin in 1996, before a 7.0% swing in 1999 delivered the seat to Labor’s Liz Beattie. Beattie’s margin was further increased by 5.3% per cent through the redistribution that created Yuroke, and then by 13.7% as Labor surged in Melbourne’s outer suburbs as part of the 2002 landslide. There followed successive Liberal swings of 2.7% in 2006 and 4.9% in 2010.
The new Labor candidate is Ros Spence, a former mayor of Hume and electorate officer to Beattie, who shares her support base in the Socialist Left. Spence is married to Kosmos Samaras, the party’s assistant state secretary, who has lately been in the news over the disappearance of Age reporter Farrah Tomazin’s dictaphone and the subsequent emergence of a private conversation she had with Ted Baillieu.
