Pascoe Vale is a safe Labor electorate in Melbourne’s middle north, encompassing most of Coburg in the south, Pascoe Vale in the centre, and most of Glenroy in the north. The redistribution has added 0.7% to the Labor margin by making two changes at the electorate’s northern end, adding 4600 voters in Glenroy and neighbouring Padfield from the electorate of Broadmeadows, while further to the west Gowanbrae and its 1900 voters are shifted to the new seat of Sunbury.

Labor has held Pascoe Vale since its creation in 1985, and appears to have strengthened in the area over time. Kelvin Thomson held the seat from 1988 to 1996, when he entered federal politics as member for Wills. Thomson was succeeded by Christine Campbell, who had worked as Thomson’s electorate officer and previously for the union that forms his power base, the Right faction Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association.

Campbell is bowing out at the coming election, but the seat stands to remain in the SDA fold with the preselection of Lizzie Blandthorn, a union organiser and god-daughter to Campbell, for whom she formerly worked as an electorate officer. Other nominees for preselection included Lambros Tapinos, the mayor of Moreland, and Anthony Cianflone, an adviser to Kelvin Thomson.
