Ovens Valley is the new name for the seat formerly known as Murray Valley, encompassing the Murray River towns of Cobram in the west and Yarrawonga in the east, with Wangaratta as its dominant population centre. The redistribution extended it southwards with a large gain of territory from abolished Benalla, encompassing 9000 voters in Mansfield and surrounding alpine territory, while truncating its Murray River frontage at both ends, with 5000 voters around Nathalia going to Shepparton in the west and 3000 at Rutherglen going to Benambra in the east.
Murray Valley was a secure seat for the National/Country Party throughout a history that commenced in 1945, having been held by Bolte-era party leader George Moss until 1973, William Baxter until 1976 (who returned as a member for the upper house province of North Eastern in 1978, and unsuccessfully contested Benambra when left homeless by electoral reform in 2006), Ken Jasper until 2010, and most recently by Tim McCurdy, formerly the deputy mayor of Moira. McCurdy won promotion in March to parliamentary secretary for tourism and trade.
