Sunbury is a new electorate to emerge from the redistribution at Melbourne’s north-western edge, although it closely resembles the old seat of Tullamarine that existed before the 2002 election. The electorate consists of two distinct areas – Sunbury proper, a satellite town 40 kilometres north-west of central Melbourne, and, 20 kilometres to the south-east, Melbourne Airport and its outer suburban surrounds, including Tullamarine and Gladstone Park. The former area was previously in Macedon, while the latter was in Yuroke (which provides 13,200 voters) and Pascoe Vale (1900 voters). The electorate also includes an area around Diggers Rest to the south of Sunbury that was previously in Melton, providing a further 1300 voters.
While the new electorate has a solid Labor margin of 6.5%, Tullamarine had not been so strong for Labor that it was able to withstand the 1992 landslide, when it was won for the Liberals by former radio personality Bernie Finn. Finn increased his margin at the 1996 election before suffering a decisive 7.0% swing to Labor’s Liz Beattie in 1999. With the seat’s abolition, the southern end of the electorate went to the new seat of Yuroke, which was contested by Liz Beattie, and the Sunbury end went to the new seat of Macedon, with both seats swinging massively to Labor at the 2002 election.
Labor’s candidate for Sunbury is Josh Bull, a 28-year-old staffer to federal McEwen MP Rob Mitchell, who won preselection without opposition.
