Sandringham covers expensive bayside real estate south of the city, encompassing Sandringham, Black Rock, Beamaris and Mentone on the coast, along with Highett and western Cheltenham further inland. The redistribution has added 1700 voters east of the Nepean Highway in Highett from Mordialloc, shaving 0.3% from the Liberal margin. The electorate has existed since 1955, and has only ever been won by Labor at the 1982 election that brought John Cain to power. It has been held since 1992 by Murray Thompson, who held front-bench positions from 2002 until February 2008, when he was dropped to make way for Nationals members brought in under the new coalition agreement.
