Located in Melbourne’s middle north, the electorate of Preston covers the greater part of the suburb that bears its name together with the majority of its northern neighbour Reservoir. Its southern boundary of Bell Street serving as a rough dividing line between the Greens’ inner-city sphere of influence and the deep-red Labor heartland. The redistribution has added 3300 Reservoir voters from Thomastown in the north, while smoothing the southern boundary with Northcote to add 2200 voters to the east of Plenty Road and remove 3300 to its west.
Preston has existed without interruption since 1945, and has at all times been held by Labor. The member since 2006 has been Robin Scott, who was previously a staffer to his predecessor, Michael Leighton, the member from 1988. Both Leighton and Scott are members of the Labor Unity, and are commonly linked in relation to a factional power base that also encompasses federal Batman MP David Feeney. Scott was promoted after the 2010 election defeat to Shadow Minister for Finance and WorkCover, further acquiring the consumer affairs portfolio in December 2013.
