Bundoora is located 25 kilometres north-east of central Melbourne and includes the suburbs of Kingsbury at the western end and Watsonia at the east, together with Bundoora itself. The redistribution has added a further 3.3% to Labor’s already solid margin by shifting the electorate northwards, adding 8000 voters in Bundoora and Mill Park from the Mill Park electorate, while transferring 5000 at Macleod and Yallambie to Ivanhoe in the south. Labor has held Bundoora without interruption since its creation in 1976, its inaugural member having been John Cain, the Premier from 1982 to 1990. Cain was succeeded on his retirement at the 1992 election by Sherryl Garbutt, who in turn bequeathed the seat in 2006 to Colin Brooks, the mayor of Banyule and also her electorate officer.
Brooks had been promised the seat when he agreed to leave the way clear for Danielle Green to take Yan Yean in 2002, but he then appeared to be frozen out when his Right faction reassigned it to upper house reform refugee Justin Madden, in fulfilment of an arrangement in which seats were to be found for all ministers. However, the seat was made available to him after Mary Delahunty resigned as member for Northcote, allowing a new arrangement in which Fiona Richardson took Northcote, and Madden stayed in the upper house by taking the place reserved for Richardson on the Western Metropolitan ticket.
Brooks was promoted shadow parliamentary secretary after the 2010 election, and has served since February 2012 in the education portfolio.
