Covering Logan City suburbs in outer southern Brisbane, from Meadowbrook south to Waterford and Beenleigh, Waterford delivered Labor one of the worst of its many defeats at the 2012 election, when a 16.5% margin was erased by a swing to the Liberal National Party of 17.5%. The electorate ranks second in the state for number of single-parent families, and has its fifth highest concentration of public housing.

Labor’s closest brush with defeat previously came in 1998, when One Nation outpolled the Liberals to finish 5.2% short of victory after preferences. Otherwise Labor’s margins since the seat’s creation in 1992 had ranged from 9.1% to 18.0%, with little change recorded between the landslide of 2001 and the more modest victory of 2009. Tom Barton held the seat for Labor from 1992 to 2006, when he was succeeded by Evan Moorhead, an official with the Left faction Australian Manufacturing Workers Union.

The victorious LNP candidate in 2012 was Michael Latter, a former law clerk and paralegal. Labor’s candidate is Shannon Fentiman, a solicitor for Hall Payne Lawyers and a former advocate for the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union.
