Vaucluse covers Sydney’s most exclusive real estate around the South Head of Port Jackson, extending west along the harbour to Rushcutter Bay and south along the coast to Bondi Beach. It has been left entirely unchanged by the latest redistribution. The electorate has existed since proportional representation was abolished in 1927 and has been in conservative hands at all times, support for Labor being so weak that they were outpolled by the Greens in both 2007 and 2010.
The member since the 2011 election has been Gabrielle Upton, a former pro-chancellor of the University of New South Wales. Her predecessor was Peter Debnam, who came to the seat in 1994 and served as Opposition Leader from September 2005 until the wake of the March 2007 election defeat. Upton was chosen to succeed Debnam in a complex preselection contest that also featured restaurateur Peter Doyle, Woollahra mayor Andrew Petrie, public relations consultant Mary Lou Jarvis, Sydney gymnasium business figure Peter Cavanagh and former Malcolm Turnbull staffer Anthony Orkin.
Upton entered the ministry as Sport and Recreation Minister after Graham Annesley bowed out in August 2013, and won further promotion to the family and community services portfolio when Mike Baird became Premier in April 2014.
