The safe Nationals seat of Myall Lakes covers 70 kilometres of the Central Coast to the north of Newcastle and south of Port Macquarie, including the coastal towns of Tuncurry and Forster and the inland centre of Taree on the Manning River. It has been little changed by the redistribution, which adds thinly populated rural areas are gained from Oxley in the north-west, and lost to Upper Hunter and Port Stephens in the south-west.
The electorate was created in 1988 in place of abolished Gloucester, an always conservative seat that had been in National/Country Party hands since independent member Ray Fitzgerald joined the party in 1947. Gloucester MP Wendy Machin then moved to the seat of Manning, which was renamed Port Macquarie in 1991, while Myall Lakes was retained for the Nationals by John Turner, a former solicitor and tax agent. Turner was succeeded upon his retirement in 2011 by Forster solicitor Stephen Bromhead.
