The safe Liberal seat of Lane Cove covers a stretch of Sydney Harbour’s north shore inland of the city, bisected from south to north by the Lane Cove River. The area to the west of the river encompasses Hunters Hill and eastern Ryde, while that to the east is centred on Lane Cove itself. Only minor changes have resulted from the redistribution, which has adjusted the boundary with Ryde to add around 2400 voters in parts of North Ryde and Putney on the harbour, and altered the eastern boundary with Willoughby to add 3500 voters in Lane Cove North and remove 2800 around Chatswood West.
The Lane Cove electorate was created when proportional representation was abolished in 1927, and has been held by the Liberal Party since it first contested a state election in 1947. In recent decades it has provided a seat for two Liberal leaders, John Dowd (from 1975 to 1991) and Kerry Chikarovski (from 1991 to 2003). Dowd served as Attorney-General in the first term of the Greiner government before announcing his retirement days before the 1991 election was called, reportedly because he had not been guaranteed his portfolio after the election. The preselection subsequently went to Chikarovski, who held the seat until she resigned at the 2003 election after losing the leadership to John Brogden a year previously.
The member since Chikarovksi’s departure has been Anthony Roberts, formerly the mayor of Lane Cove and an adviser to John Howard, who has emerged as a figurehead of the “religious Right” faction traditionally associated with upper house MP David Clarke. After securing minor shadow portfolio responsibilities in the last years of opposition, Roberts won a substantial promotion to Fair Trading Minister after the 2011 election victory, and went on to replace Chris Hartcher as Minister for Resources and Energy and Special Minister of State upon his resignation in December 2013.
