Federal polls: YouGov and Roy Morgan (open thread)

Two more pollsters find One Nation yielding the fruits of a post-budget backlash, with the Coalition sinking ever further.

The fortnightly YouGov Sky News Pulse poll joins RedBridge Group and DemoAU in recording a primary vote lead for One Nation, who have surged four points in the second such poll since the budget to 29%, with Labor down two for the second fortnight in a row, to 26%. The Coalition has more than lost the two-point gain it made in the post-budget poll, being down three to 20%, while the Greens are steady on 13%. Two-party measures have Labor leading One Nation 52.5-47.5, in from 53-47, and the Coalition 51.5-48.5, in from 52-48.

Anthony Albanese has taken a hit on his personal ratings, down three on approval to 34% and up four on disapproval to 60%. He holds a 47-41 lead over Pauline Hanson on preferred prime minister, in from 50-38, and 41-39 over Angus Taylor, in from 41-38. Forty-six per cent of all respondents said they believed the Coalition and One Nation should work together to form government with 31% opposed, breaking down to 45% and 28% among Coalition voters and 53% and 25% among One Nation voters. The poll was conducted last Tuesday through to yesterday from a sample of 1471.

The weekly Roy Morgan poll has One Nation drawing level with Labor on the primary vote at 27%, with Labor down half a point and One Nation up one-and-a-half, with the Coalition down three to 20% and the Greens steady on 13.5%. Labor’s lead over One Nation on respondent-allocated two-party preferred is unchanged at 53.5-46.5; against the Coalition, Labor’s lead improves from 53-47 to 55.5-44.5 on respondent-allocated preferences, and from 52-48 to 53.5-46.5 on previous election flows. The poll was conducted last Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1542.

If ON wins Wentworth then it’s all over red rover and book a 1 way ticket to Auckland.

Apologies if this has already been discussed on here (I’ve been busy with other stuff and haven’t read every post).

Anyway, you simply couldn’t make this story up.

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-06-03/sydney-morning-herald-takes-down-ai-wsu-article/106756298

An academic writes an article saying, “kids, don’t go to university, it’s being made uncompetitive and irrelevant by AI systems such as Copilot” So a university decides to respond with the message along the lines of “come on in, the water’s fine.” And now there are suggestions that the university had effectively asked Copilot itself to come up with that response.

I’m very much looking forward to the day in which a research article published in an academic journal by Claude will be dissected by Copilot in the next edition of the same journal. And when AI robots get up in Parliament to debate each other.

    Ain’t life grand.

I dont work in the academic stream within the university sector, but what is known as the ‘professional staff’ area, basically anyone actually running the joint.

From my perspective AI is both a curse and a blessing. Those of us who have 30 years of work expereicne behind us, grew up with Z80s as our first home computer in the 1980s, went through the early internet and now into AI seem to have a grasp on it. It’s a tool to help productivity, it certainty does not replace human insight, experience, and understanding.

That isnt what I am directly seeing it being used for. As an example in the recruitment space written applications have basically become useless. I’m back to pre-interview interviews, work tests, and presentations to try and weed out the people who solely rely on AI for their job applications.

Even this isnt working, the interviews I conducted yesterday had AI produces slides and scripts in their presentations, their work test (which because of reasons had to be 24hrs take home) had at least some if not all AI produced work. It shows up gaps I guess but I want to see the actual person.

  4. nadia – me too. This is but one reason why I oppose ON and will not miss an opportunity to say why. Anyone else of the same mind should consider saddling up and doing likewise, whenever they can.

  5. From the latest New Daily poll of readers I think we can assume that most Australians support the wage rise for those on minimum wages.

“Businesses and economists warn the latest rise in minimum wages could fuel inflation and more rate rises. Are you concerned?

    * No – low-paid workers deserve to get more – 57%
    * It’s because of inflation that workers need a pay rise – 31%
    * Yes – the last thing we need is another rate rise – 12%

    2890 votes”

GrannyAnny, I am absolutely not surprised at this poll result. What the 88% who support this pay rise need to be informed of is that Pauline Hanson and One Nation reject them, and instead line up with the 12% who disapprove this pay rise.

Drivers with lawful cannabis prescriptions will be offered a medical defence and subjected to a three-strike impairment test under major roadside safety reforms in NSW.

Those with prescriptions who test positive will be barred from driving for 24 hours while samples are analysed, as the Minns government’s legislation tries to balance the needs of a growing cohort of people lawfully using medicinal cannabis against concerns about road safety.

Eight months after the state government committed to investigating the issue, NSW will join Tasmania as the only states with medical defence models.

Niki Savva on Abbott’s comeback. Sussan Ley dodged a serious bullet.

Abbott has never renounced his dream of a comeback. The man pledging to rid Australia of its spiritual malaise lives in hope of redemption. If an opportunity arose to get back into parliament – and he is said to be eyeing off the NSW Central Coast seat of Shortland – he would grab it in a heartbeat.

This would be the same Abbott who couldn’t make it to his second anniversary as prime minister, not because of any undermining by Malcolm Turnbull, but because of his own ineptitude.

Even Liberals who like him know his resurrection carries risks. They know he will be a tireless advocate at branch meetings, could help recruit donors and might restore some of the party’s lost base. He energised the Liberal Party’s federal council last week (you could feel it in the room, according to one person there) and he always gets his message across.

They also know once he flicks the on switch, he can’t turn it off. Abbott says he won’t take a vow of silence and, on this at least, he can be believed. The titular opposition leader, Angus Taylor, will shrink under his shadow.

Abbott wants to help, then he will want to take over. He will either make Taylor look more ineffective than he does already or remind people why he failed so spectacularly in his first incarnation as prime minister. Either way, it’s bad.

It seems that no one can say why the voters are rushing to ON. My opinion is that we should look back to December and the massacre at Bondi, by two Muslims. The resulting kerfuffle about a Royal Commission, antisemitism, some fire bombing and antisemitic graffiti.
Then, over the last three months, we have had the “ISIS wives and children” being brought back to Australia. The one policy by ON is anti-immigration, in particular Muslims, Sudanese and Indian migrants.
This is the reason voters are flocking to ON. I cannot see any other policies that would polarise voters so suddenly. Never forget Pauline’s Burka stunts in Parliament.

So muskiemp implies that a significant portion of Australians hate Australian citizens of Indian origin. Hence, they are flocking to ON. Nice to know muskiemp.
I wonder why. They have the lowest crime rate, if any, amongst any ethnic group inAustralia. They follow the rule of law religiously. They keep their head down and go about their business. They don’t get into fight with anyone.

  13. Well hopefully we get a Newspoll this Sunday evening.
I’m tipping a very small drop in the ALP primary from 31 to 30, if we do get one.
Newspoll isn’t known for “helter skelter” movements, and it should settle down all the hysterical reporting which has been going on these past few weeks.

BT has been updated today. The ALP primary has dropped to 28.9%.
Overall it’s only dropped 1.1% since the Friday before budget week. All MOE turf.
    2PP has dropped to 51.6% – still a lead.

Nothing “falling off the cliff”, despite what the newspapers are saying.

  14. Newy boy at 9.45am.

    https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/9281372/pauline-hanson-one-nation-leaders-choices-and-strategy-explored/
“In a revealing sweep of arrogance and ignorance she says she doesn’t go to Senate estimates because the bureaucrats don’t answer her questions. What a joke she is. Doesn’t she realise that bureaucrats have never gone along to estimates in order to dob a government in. We have this wonderful committee process that allows bureaucrats to be cross examined. Getting the answers requires effort, patience and skill. She just can’t be bothered. She doesn’t take the job seriously enough. Or maybe she is incapable of an attention span that would allow her to succeed. ”
“She’s like the mum who makes a brief appearance at the fundraising cake stall. She stands out the front for a short time, spruiking the wares over which others have laboured. She gets her photo taken. She does neither the setting up or cleaning up. She contributes nothing. She’s a star in her own eyes.”

Racism is the most popular sport in the world in its different guises and variations.

Australians as is commonly observed, are very keen on sport and are very forgiving when it comes to the many foibles attributed to our sporting greats.

The rise of ON, and its use of a variety of logos, is a racism sport with many supporters prepared to forgive the assortment of foibles attributed to the ON sporting greats.

ON and its role models should enjoy it while they are vying for a chance to compete in the finals as the rampaging “orange dingos”.

I am beginning to have doubts about myself.

Descartes is all very well but he was a french migrant who sought intellectual freedom in Holland. And when a New Dutchman says something like ‘I think therefore I am’ we really need to look under the bonnet.

I wrote the above and then asked AI…

AI Overview The phrase “AI thinks, therefore it is” riffs on Descartes’ Cogito, ergo sum. While AI can process data and solve complex problems, modern machines are executing advanced mathematics and pattern recognition rather than engaging in conscious, experiential thought. Consequently, “thinking” doesn’t necessarily translate to Cartesian existence or sentience.

OC – no worries. Let’s put our heads together and come up with catch phrases to appeal to those other demographics as well.

In the meantime, I also want people to know that Pauline Hanson is on the record saying minimum wage earners, as well as workers on awards tied to the same FWC wager determination process, do not deserve and should not get any pay rise this year. Pauline Hanson is also on the record saying she will vote against; the $250 WATO tax cut. These facts may be boring to you, but they are still information which is very relevant to anyone thinking of voting for One Nation.

It is okay to use your catchphrase newyboy. I repeatedly used ‘Dutton is Trump mini-me] before 2025 election.

  25. Re tobacco, I’ve long thought that the taxing of tobacco has been taken too far. The tax mostly affects people who are relatively poor who are mostly addicted, although on the plus side it probably deters teens from taking the habit up in the first place.

It doesn’t affect me personally, I’ve never smoked. When I was young, cigarette smoke was everywhere that humans gathered. Most boys and many girls started smoking while still at school or shortly after they left. I was asthmatic, so never took it up myself.

I’ve never heard of anyone aged 25 or 40 taking up smoking. If you don’t start by voting age you probably never do. It seems that every smoker was once a teen who wanted to be and look cool.

Now smoking’s pretty much restricted to consenting adults in private. That’s probably enough, together with a modest tax to help defray health costs, plus measures to help people quit and, critically, deter young people from starting in the first place. Counter any “cool” image that smoking might still have. To deter young people talk about yellow teeth, bad breath and so forth as much as long term health issues.

Cutting tobacco tax won’t help much now, unless its to near zero. The illegal trade is now just too established.

  26. I haven’t been paying much attention to Australian politics lately, but when I see Albo and his ministers making mincemeat of Taylor and his Opposition in parliament particularly, I think, “You’re wasting your time Albo. You’ve already beaten the Coalition. Don’t get distracted bayoneting the wounded.” Write-off the Coalition by ignoring them.

The real enemy is (mostly) not in Parliament. One Nation is the new enemy. Get them fighting the Coalition for dominance for a start: “Dividé et conquero!”. Then ridicule their leadership and mock their policies (what policies they have, which are very thin). But make it analytical, not dismissive.

We have seen the mistake the Democrats (and to a great extent, the Republicans) made with Trump: they didn’t take him seriously as a potential rival. Don’t make that mistake here. Labor has two years to adapt to the new political reality. Use the time wisely.

Ven, thanks. I am appalled that a party which views migrants the way they do can be polling so highly in this country. I also wish those thinking of voting for them could be persuaded otherwise by appealing to the better angels of their nature, but I think that is a vain wish. Hence, they need to be alerted to the fact that One Nation is cynically exploiting their base prejudices not for their benefit, but for the benefit of the wealthy mining and property magnates who are pulling their strings. Hence, my taking every opportunity I can to put these two facts in front of people’s eyeballs:

PAULINE HANSON OPPOSES YOUR PAY RISE.

  32. Re tobacco, I’ve long thought that the taxing of tobacco has been taken too far. The tax mostly affects people who are relatively poor who are mostly addicted, although on the plus side it probably deters teens from taking the habit up in the first place.

My answer to a lifelong nicotine addiction (if I wasn’t smoking myself as an adult, I was breathing in my old man’s second-hand smoke as a kid) was to take up vaping. I don’t mean the disposable vapes that tobacconists now sell for $50 a pop. I invested in a rechargeable and refillable system to which I could add my own, measured amount of nicotine.

Without really planning to do so as some kind of deliberate strategy, over the next three years I gradually reduced the amount of nicotine I added from 10% to 0.5% of the basic liquid. Eventually I added no nicotine at all. I kept puffing away for the next 12 months, as an oral habit, but have given that up too.

Without preaching at them I helped others give up smoking using the above method, showing them where to obtain vaping supplies etc. and how to mix in the nicotine safely: the practicalities of vaping. It worked for about 40% of them, which disappointed me at first, but eventually I realised it wasn’t such a bad result at all, compared to other methods.

Nothing else had worked for me, despite my trying for 30 years to give up the fags. I was hopelessly addicted, but redirected my addiction in an easier (and far, far cheaper at 30¢ a day) direction, eventually leaving only the oral habit, and then getting rid of that. Sounds pathetic to non-smokers, I know. But to anyone who has been addicted, they’ll know what I mean.

Then the government banned vaping. It’s as if the bikie gangs had someone in high places put there to send business their way. Crazy, crazy, crazy…

MI but girls are not as good as boys!

That last paragraph is oddly phrased by Barnaby.

Did he just cock up the intent here? Did he mean that people should not be able to sex select via abortion because they (not he) female fetuses? Is he directly having a crack at the China experience during the, now defunct, one child policy?

  34. The Labor Government and the Coalition Opposition are on a unity ticket in standing against Donald Trump’s imposition of a 12.5% tariff on Australian goods (among other nations) for what amounts to a spurious reason. But what about Pauline Hanson and One Nation?

Anthony Albanese says new tariffs from the US on Australian goods announced yesterday are “unwarranted” and that the government has made its position on tariffs clear…

.. The trade minister, Don Farrell, has pushed back on Donald Trump’s latest round of sanctions, telling his US counterpart the targeting of Australian imports is unjustified…

… Chalmers also gives a strong rebuke of the Trump administration’s 12.5% tariffs for countries allegedly importing goods made by slave labour, announced yesterday. The administration named 54 countries including Australia. The treasurer says Australia has world-leading legislation to combat modern slavery, and says the government will “continue to take every opportunity” to fight the levy.

“These tariffs are unwarranted, they’re unjustified, and they’re inconsistent with our free trade agreement with the US, and we’ve made that case repeatedly. So, we will continue to take every opportunity that we can to stand up for Australian exporters and to stand up for the workers and businesses in those industries.”

    https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/live/2026/jun/04/australia-politics-live-capital-gains-tax-property-prices-economy-budget-jim-chalmers-anthony-albanese-angus-taylor-pauline-hanson-senate-estimates-question-time-ntwnfb?page=with%3Ablock-6a20ac828f08d10bbf391c0c#block-6a20ac828f08d10bbf391c0c

But from Pauline Hanson, we have heard … nothing. In fact, last March when Trump first threw international trade into turmoil with his ‘Trump tariffs’, Pauline Hanson actually agreed with him doing this, even though it would hurt Aussie companies which has invested in building a business exporting goods into the US.

China: 109 male to 100 female births.

Not only is the TFR falling in China, the proportion of male to female births further accelerates the population decline.

Australia: 105-6 male to 100 female births which is close to the natural ratio of male to female births.

  36. I see the BCA drivel to support the Epstein class hasn’t got any smarter, apparently every regulation or tax not fully approved by that class is a war.
