The Australian reports the first Newspoll in four weeks finds no abatement in the Coalition’s loss of support to One Nation, with the former down four on the primary vote since the last poll to 24% and the latter up four to 15%. This smashes records at both ends: the Coalition’s 27% in the previous poll was already their worst ever, while One Nation’s previous record was 13%. Labor and the Greens are both down a point, to 36% and 11% respectively, with Labor’s two-party lead unchanged at 57-43. Sussan Ley’s approval rating has tumbled seven points to 25%, while her disapproval is up nine to 58%. Anthony Albanese is at 46% approval and 51% disapproval, both up one from last time, and leads 54-27 on preferred prime minister, out from 51-31. The poll was conducted Monday to Thursday from a sample of 1265.
James Campbell of News Corp also reported yesterday on a poll from Freshwater Strategy, which had gone quiet since markedly overstating Coalition support in its polling before the May federal election. It found Labor leading 55-45 from primary votes of Labor 33%, Coalition 31% and One Nation 10%, with no result provided in the report for the Greens. The poll also found 35% holding that the country is headed in the right direction, compared with 52% for wrong direction; that 22% now rate immigration “one of the most important issues they want the federal government to focus on”, compared with 11% in February 2024.
Trump government doing well first secured the borders, second greatly reduced drugs flowing into USA and now rounding up illegals on mass many of them criminals.

In Australia our economy is a basketcase.Inflation, debt and unemployment all increasing ,economic growth stuff all, productivity a disaster thanks to DEI and a hand picked via labor incompetent reserve bank.Housing a social disaster caused by the labor government.Population Ponzi scheme in action.
Next weeks unemployment stats interesting!

Any evidence?
Try a search in Google images. Note his skiting about grabbing women’s privates, a rape charge, Stormy Daniels, expressing a desire to “date” his daughter, and do some research about where and how he met his current wife who is much younger than him. Have another look at the famous birthday card and his cousin Mary wrote a book about him and his attitude to women. After all that have a think about why they are doing everything possible to prevent the release of the Epstein files and why Epstein’s accomplice Ghislane Maxwell was moved to a more luxurious prison and will likely be pardoned if Trump doesn’t kick the tin shortly after singing his praises to a senior official in Trump’s so called Justice Department.

Exactly. Magic Pudding economics.
P1, so what boundary are you sniping from? Totally on cue
‘Liberal Party’ is a curseword among millenials and Gen Z, and women in general. They are holed below the waterline. Their current antics are their political death rattle
I thought Andrew Bragg did well making the arguments publicly that he’ll run in the party room – net zero is the international standard, only a handful of rogue nations aren’t signed up to Paris and net zero, although I was surprised Speers didn’t call out the US, PK did afterwards. Noting I’m not sure his list was right.
The argument to remove 2050 but keep net zero could be a winner politically although I don’t think that’s where they will land
Ideally there won’t be a gap for nuclear to fill but it’s a better alternative than gas imo
I liked his line re principles i.e. you need to stick with them, effectively acknowledging that if the Liberals dump net zero he’ll have no alternative than to quit, although it wasn’t clear if that was just from Shadow Cabinet or the party. He doesn’t expect that to happen though.
Note. the planet needs us to get there before 2050 and I don’t think Labor’s policies will get there by then
Tales of 50 years ago:
I was listening to parliament on 2BL while studying for final anatomy the next day.
At one point Hawke said on the steps wtte: as they have withdrawn supply, we will withdraw supply, indicating a general strike and civil disobedience.
I momentarily thought of going into the city to smash the windows of Farmers., but instead I got a Credit in the exam.
Bragg is about the only Liberal trying, only problem for him is there are no seats for him to move to. Labor has a poor record on housing, and the 5% deposit while popular has boosted property prices.
Nath,
Don’t be a douche.
Howard Stern and Trump discussing Trump’s ownership of Miss Teen USA:
STERN: Some of these foreign girls say “You know, Mr Trump, in my country we say hello with the vagina” and…
TRUMP: … Well you could also say, as the owner of the pageant, it’s your obligation to do that so so you have done that now. I’ll tell you the funny is… is that I’ll go backstage before the show, yes, and everyone’s getting dressed and ready and everything else and, you know, no men are anywhere, and I’m allowed to go in because I’m the owner of the pageant and therefore I’m inspecting it, you know. I’m “inspecting”. I want to make sure that the dress… “Is everyone okay?” You know? They’re standing there with no clothes on… “Is everybody okay?”, and you see these incredible looking women, naked. And so I sort of get away with things like that.”
Remember: this is what he’s prepared to admit to a mass audience, tuned in to a top rating radio show. What he gets up to in private is likely in the Epstein Files.
At first glance it seems amusing that so many Labor rusted-ons here assume that anyone who disagrees with them on policy must be from “the Right”, because they apparently believe that wherever they are standing must be – by definition – “the Left”.
But when you think about it some more it stops being amusing and starts being a bit sad.

The argument to remove 2050 but keep net zero could be a winner politically
Then the question becomes, so when do you aim to get to Net Zero by? You can’t just leave these things off into the Never Never, the planet won’t wait that long, and neither does business want to. The Coalition, supposedly the parties of business, want certainty around national energy policy. The Liberal Party, especially, and their wishy washy position, which they appear to be headed towards, is a nothingburger that hard-headed business types want nothing to do with. Especially as there’s dosh to be made from the Energy transition.
It’s just dumb politics from political parties who seem to be too busy cutting off their noses despite their faces.

From a determination to protect POTUS from revelations of his pedophilia, the US government has been closed down by his party.
Arising from the idiotic imposition of punitive new taxes – tariffs -on US consumers, real wages have started to fall. The erosion of real wages is starting to hurt the labour force, as payrolls have begun to fall.
Trump’s racially/politically motivated attacks on immigrants have made horticultural production impossible in many places, forcing food prices to rise by around 10% since he came to power.
Trump himself is also very obviously in seriously declining health. He will likely soon experience another stroke or more TIAs. He has congestive heart failure and allied kidney disease. He is developing serious dementia and is clearly a candidate for a heart attack.
I hope he lives long enough to be punished for his sexual crimes.
In any case, US voters have had enough of Trump and the GOP. They face electoral decimation in about a year from now.

Albo’s Govt by far is the most right wing and corporate friendly Labor Govt in modern history. Much more so than Hawke’s.
UK Opinium poll, 5-7 November (previous one 22-24 October)
Reform: 33% (+3)
Labour: 20% (=)
Conservative: 17% (-1)
Lib Dems: 12% (=)
Greens: 11% (-1)
SNP: 3% (=)
Others: 5% (=)
Hmmmmm, here’s a thought…..
I have been thinking in the past that a carbon tax on petrol at the pump is political trouble, but you could use the NZ RUC system (km based) institute a carbon tax on fuel based on km travelled and efficiency estimates for that model for cars sold from, say, 2028, that are garaged within urban areas. This avoids slamming a tax on poorer people with old ICE cars and also gives peeps in the regions an exemption. This is an added incentive to buy a more efficient car or preferably an EV without some of the political kick back a tax on petrol at the pump would attract.
Rex
Disagree strongly
Hawke and Keating were the men who spat on the altar of socialism.
Albo is much less right wing than them, although this may only be because they left him with less things to sell or deregulate.
Albo is differently the most conservative Labor PM, wouldn’t call his government right wing.

I’ve partly stopped dividing the world into left and right. By my lights there are those who believe in the social estate, the rule of law, democratic political systems, who believe in learning and the force of reason and who respect the interests and claims of ordinary people in a fast-changing world.
And then there are the Reactionaries …. Those who hate modernity, who resent the social estate and hope to destroy it….those who loathe democracy, who object to egalitarian values, those who would privilege wealth and title. These are the Tories and their henchmen. These voices would destroy everything given the chance.
The Reactionaries also have their tributaries, their allies, ensigns, proxies, reserves, trainees, scouts, errand-boys, water-carriers, interns, courtesans, mercenaries and apologists. They are just as bad. They work for the Reactionaries and justify it by the strength of their hatreds and their various phobias.
Define ‘urban areas’ for the future, TK. That’s where the problem lies.
Hack, do you think the uptick in inflation in the US is actually quite small considering Trumps huge haphazard tariffs? And, if they are lucky, it could only be a short term rise (some big assumptions there but on the face of it, it’s a one off rise).
Trump is introducing tariffs for all the wrong reasons and in a disorganised way, but as someone who isn’t against tariffs in principle, I’m interested in this. We are often told by capitalists who prosper from the inequalities of globalisation that tariffs = Armageddon. I think the US is showing that even these cray cray tariffs aren’t (of themselves) sending the US economy off a cliff.

Bragg’s fudge is no winner, more a political suicide note. How will his climate quietism possibly win back younger voters who have rejected the Libs, especially when it’s obviously a figleaf to cover the denialist fossil boosters who run the show
The right is in the midst of a major realignment. The existing parties are heading for the margins, dragged by their membership and major donors like Gina. The sane voters who lean that way are politically homeless but for the Teals. Electoral reform threatens the Teals common funding apparatus so I think they or people very like them will form a new centre right party, probably not this cycle, but the next
Meher:
“It was a memorably wonderful night watching that scumbag getting the boot, and the start of the best government Australia has ever had.”
Yes I was profoundly pleased to see Fraser get the boot. He came up in my estimation later, but probably in the context of how bloody awful Howard was.
I always thought Fraser’s tears were a genuine sadness that he really didn’t achieve as much as he wanted.
If Speers wasn’t so focussed on politics as a soap opera and questioned Bragg about the policy points he made, it would have quickly become apparent that he was lying.
Furthermore, the Nats energy policy (which inevitably will become the Coalition policy) is:
“Amend rules to prioritise the lowest energy prices.”
> I don’t know what this means – in the NEM, the lowest price bidder is dispatched first, the highest price bidder last.
“Scrap carbon taxes & end Labor’s war on utes and family cars.”
> I guess this refers to the Safeguard Mechanism and New Vehicle Efficiency Scheme. If they were a serious party and not fringe dwellers they would use the actual policy names.
“Unleash all our energy, including coal, gas, nuclear and renewables.”
> I guess this means they intend to subsidise coal, gas and nuclear in 20 years.
“Australia’s energy future does not have to depend on building big power lines across farms. Local communities, landowners and businesses should help decide how we get our energy.
We need a common sense approach to renewables – solar panels where they make economic and practical sense such as our vast commercial and industrial precincts, not across our pristine landscapes or prime agricultural land.”
> No utility scale renewables?
https://powering.au/
C@t, urban areas are defined by planning codes.
It’s not a perfect system. It’s not a genius idea. But it’s better than the poison of a carbon tax on fuel at the pump. EV uptake is slow. The FBT exemptions on novated leases isn’t doing enough.
My other idea is for the government to bulk buy 3 models of small EV cars and sell them at cost to low income peeps. But That idea was also a lead ballon full of potatoes.
Really enjoyed Metallica concert last night. And shout out to supporting band Evanescence. Lead singer Amy was fire. She was absolutely amazing.
Hack, do you think the uptick in inflation in the US is actually quite small considering Trumps huge haphazard tariffs? And, if they are lucky, it could only be a short term rise (some big assumptions there but on the face of it, it’s a one off rise).
* US companies have been absorbing the uptick in costs thus far. Also, front end loading their inventory purchases before the tariffs would kick in.
* Health Care Premiums are about to skyrocket if the Republicans get their way on the shutdown.
The worst is yet to come, TK.

Grocery prices are the thing. Prices have risen very noticeably. Trump promised to bring them down. To add insult to injury he’s also lying about grocery prices. His lies don’t need to be fact checked in the media. Every time people shop they can see through the lies for themselves.
On tariffs….they are really idiotic policy. They drive down real wages and are generally regressive.
Humans are heating the planet and it will cost us far more in doing nothing than in transitioning away from the things that are causing that heating,
As a country that has long emitted these planet heating gases, it is incumbent on us to do our bit in rapidly reducing the emissions and encouraging others to also do it (especially as we have renewable power advantages). No, we don’t need to be a Guinea pig. But we do need, at the very least, to honour our existing agreements and commitments (made by the Coalition ffs!!!).
If the Liberal Party can’t accept the above and are prepared to walk away from their own agreements and commitments, then, as much as I would like to hope it means their political oblivion, I fear it instead threatens any hope for meaningful transition in this country. And that is exactly what the Nationals and far right Liberals want. Advantage by division. National interest be damned.
According to the Guardian, Dan Tehan has said that the federal opposition will commit to work with state governments to extend the life of coal-fired power stations.
In other words the taxpayers will subsidise overdue maintenance and upgrades to keep ancient power stations running. How will this reduce power costs?
It doesn’t matter really. By the time they sort themselves out and win an election there won’t be any coal fired power stations left.
