Morgan: 57-43 to Labor (open thread)

One poll finds Labor maintaining its post-election dominance, while another finds displeasure with the Trump presidency easing slightly.

Roy Morgan maintains its post-election form of publishing intermittent large-sample results from accumulated weekly polling, on this occasion reporting Labor with a lead of 57-43, in from 57.5-42.5 a month ago. The primary votes are Labor 36.5% (steady), Coalition 31% (up half), Greens 12% (steady) and One Nation 7% (down one-and-a-half). The accompanying report has breakdowns by state and gender. The poll was conducted from June 30 to July 27 from a sample of 5159.

Also on the polling front are further numbers from last week’s Resolve Strategic poll in Nine Newspapers, showing 46% would think it a good think if Australia became more independent of the United States on foreign policy and national security, with 22% rating it bad. Displeasure with Trump’s election win is down on its post-liberation day peak in April, now being rated bad by 53% (down fifteen) and good by 18% (up seven). The lack of a meeting between Trump and Anthony Albanese is rated mainly Albanese’s or Australia’s fault by 26%, Trump’s or the US’s by 38%, and nobody’s by 17%.

Sarah Ferguson must get annoyed having Labor ministers on because her gotcha attempts are utterly harmless. Just had Mark Butler on for 7 minutes and couldn’t lay a glove on him over PBS or Trump or Bulk Billing. He was batting away her Liberal talking points like a Indian middle order batter smashing their way to a century with Ferguson playing the role of Stokes rambling angrily while the game slipped away.to treat

It really does make for boring television. You watch shows like 7.30 in an attempt to be informed, not to watch Sarah Ferguson regurgitate Liberal party talking points for Mark Butler to treat with the contempt they deserve.

  2. Omar Comin’.
I am an all-seeing, all-knowing C@t! Who is constantly regurgitating their furballs in the general direction of those who I detect are disturbing the force! 😉

  3. Can someone send Barnaby Joyce and the Climate Dinosaurs on a fact-finding mission to the ‘green and pleasant land’ of England, right about now, so he can see the effects of his Net Zero and Fossil Fuel foolishness?

Geez Gina must have him on a great retainer and a tight leash.

Hmm, I can only see one sensible outcome from all this. The Climate Dinosaurs split from the Coalition and join with Hanson’s mob of Trumptastic (/s) idiots, the sane and sensible ones remain behind with the Liberals and take in the Teals to form a sane and sensible and viable Opposition. Leave Hanson and her cohort of Old Men Shouting At the Clouds to their increasingly irrelevant devices, as their political support slowly leaches away and into their graves.

The constant interruptions are just plain rude. You asked the question – shut up and let them answer it!

  5. On Redistributions.

I can’t wait for the Redistribution after next. Hopefully I will be around for it then. Ima thinking that a lot of the building that Labor will have spawned will have been filled with new voters, especially in NSW and Victoria, and they will have a material effect on the boundaries and the voting patterns in those seats. 🙂

  6. I’m guessing that Ferguson was throwing the discredited Cleanbill data at the Health Minister, like it actually meant something?

  7. Is Keir Starmer really the Trump Whisperer? Seems like it:

London: US President Donald Trump has called on Israel to speed up the flow of food to families in Gaza and set a new deadline for Russia to end the war in Ukraine, urgently intensifying his demands on both global flashpoints.

Trump aired his frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin by revoking his earlier deadline of 50 days to ensure a ceasefire in Ukraine, declaring in Scotland on Monday (Tuesday AEST) that the new deadline would be just 10 or 12 days.

With the war in Gaza causing widespread hunger, Trump disputed Israel’s claim there was no starvation and said he wanted to make sure food was sent urgently to civilians in the war zone.

Asked whether he agreed with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said there was no starvation in Gaza, Trump replied: “I don’t know. Based on television, I would say not particularly, because those children look very hungry.”

Trump added later: “Some of those kids – that’s real starvation stuff. I see it, and you can’t fake that.”

The comments, made in a wide-ranging press conference with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, conveyed a more assertive message on the two conflicts when Britain and the European Union are hoping for an urgent White House intervention to stop the wars.

  8. Hard Being Green,
I’m just realistic about the fact that it is up to our leaders in the free world to lead on Gaza and that has to involve the elephant in the room that has the greatest sway over Netanyahu, as finally seems to be happening.

Us here on PB yelling at each other from entrenched positions doesn’t achieve anything.

  9. What a brilliant move by Kate Chaney:

‘Independent MP Kate Chaney introduced a bill to stop AI technology that trains or facilitates the production of child sexual abuse material.

The bill would make it an offence to download technology for creating child abuse material and an offence to collect, scrape or distribute data with the intention to train or create technology for creating child abuse.

Chaney is on ABC News Breakfast and says while its important to regulate AI more broadly (as the government has said it’s looking at), she believes the parliament should also respond to specific gaps where they emerge.

We absolutely do need to take an holistic approach to regulating AI, but we also need to be able to nimbly respond to risks as they emerge. And this is a clear gap in our criminal code …

Currently, possession of these images is illegal, but it’s not illegal to possess these particular types of AI tools that are designed for the sole purpose of creating child sexual abuse material. So, it means that perpetrators can generate the material using images of real children, delete the images, and then recreate them whenever they want and avoid detection.

Chaney says she’s met with the attorney general’s office but the challenge is that there are a lot of “reports and consultations” being done while the technology rapidly evolves.’

Jeezus, worry about your own party sport. The Greens attempting dictation for the ALP is hubris, and the last time Labor actually weakened on that score led directly to the wasted decade under the A-T-M ‘government’ of con artists and a general enshittening of Australian public affairs. ‘Slow and steady’ Albo has only now – nearly – dug us all out of that hole.

I’m looking forward to the Victorian ALP conference pushing things along on the weekend. Well assuming party members have any say at all in what happens

…Which is why I have decided that adding new information is valid. But arguing the toss from entrenched positions isn’t. We can all read about the gross horrors, but I’m interested in what’s happening to end them.

I’ll tell you a story about one of the most horrifying videos I saw. As you may have figured out, Women’s issues are very important to me, so the thing that has turned my stomach the most, even though I acknowledge the imagery of the starvation is grotesque and the actions which cause it inexcusable, was a video of a group of IDF soldiers baling up a young Palestinian Woman against a wall, surrounding her with their shields faced away from her, while they took turns in raping her. There is no ‘just cause’ for doing that and it just reminded me that, after October 7, 2023, when Hamas took young Jewish Women away to do who knows what, that both sides have been capable of just as much evil as the other, only varying in quantity not quality.

So I think arguing here about who’s on the right side of history and who’s on the wrong side is kind of pointless, you know?

  17. There is one basic truism in Labor politics. The rank and file are always to the left of the elected Members of the Left of the Labor Party.

With his words, Bob Carr is showing that he is ‘Pro-Palestinian’ and ‘anti-semitic’, isn’t it TPOF?
What can Minns do to Carr? Will he get the most successful Labor Premier during Howard times arrested?

‘Zionist’ was the only way for Left to criticise Israeli government. But once Biden said that he became a Zionist, Left had no where to go. For right, Biden words were like music to ears.
That is reason Netanyahu and IDF have become so brazen in their actions.

  21. There’s a couple of interesting items on TAI live blog:

    1. The new LOTO sounds a lot like the old LOTO. Speaking to Andrew Clennell she claimed that energy prices were putting people out of business and that it’s “because of an overreliance on renewables, the renewables only mantra that this government has been preaching for three years doesn’t work. Of course, now that I’ve realised they need to bring gas into the system, it’s all a bit light, it’s all a bit confusing, but the ultimate cost is being worn by businesses.”

    2. “Gas exports have led to the tripling of wholesale east coast gas prices and doubling of electricity prices, since exports began in 2015.

The Australian and Queensland governments’ decisions in 2010 to allow large-scale exporting of Australian gas from Queensland exposed Australians to high global prices, ending decades of abundant low-cost gas for Australians, leading to higher energy bills, gas shortages and manufacturing closures.

Gas price increases due to excessive exports have also caused electricity prices to rise because gas power stations often set electricity prices.”

The Department of Homeland Security lied about the protests against last month’s immigration raids in Los Angeles, and now their cases against protestors are getting tossed out.

A report from The Guardian Monday highlighted the shameful discrepancies between some of the Department of Homeland Security’s claims, and the reality of the unrest in Los Angeles. Inaccurate and misleading testimonies from law enforcement officers have resulted in the dismissal of eight felony cases against protesters, and three cases against people who allegedly interfered with immigration raid arrests.

Scottish people certainly don’t like Trump and showing their displeasure towards with their protests (surprise, surprise those protests are allowed).
They certainly don’t Starmer to be ‘Trump whisperer’.
Being ‘Trump whisperer’ are not helping Starmer approval ratings with approval rating of 26%. and dipproval rating in 65%

  24. SL

The fossil fuel cartel continues to rip off Australians, all supported by the grand coalition.

The crossbench is the real Opposition in parliament.

  25. The GenCost 2024-25 Report was released today by the CSIRO (in collaboration with AEMO).

“GenCost is a leading economic report for business leaders and decision-makers planning reliable and affordable energy solutions to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.”

Some of the key findings are:
-“Large-scale solar photovoltaics (PV) remains the strongest performer, falling 8 per cent for the second year in a row.
    – Battery costs recorded the biggest annual reduction, falling 20 per cent.
    – Onshore wind costs continue to increase, but at a slower rate.
    – Gas turbine costs increased the most.”

[I excluded the nuclear references, because they are no longer relevant.]

The LCOE data needs to be treated with caution. While it’s the best available metric for comparing the cost of different generation types, it’s not really intended for the layperson.

The interesting part is the capital cost information. Those cost increases in previous years (combined with interest rate rises) slowed down the renewables rollout.

    https://www.csiro.au/en/research/technology-space/energy/electricity-transition/gencost

  26. It’s a bit more complicated than that Rex and the cross-bench and TAI haven’t come up with any valid solutions that I’m aware of.

  27. Agreed Ven. If Starmer does anything that could be seen as helping Trump, or Trump starts slagging off England like he has today, then I don’t think the Poms will take too kindly to it and Starmer’s supplicant attitude will be a negative.

I think Trump whispering is largely overrated anyway, it’s like people forgot about the first Trump term. He only gets his news from TV and he only cares about TV. If something is bad TV, like a mass starvation, he will act. But once people stop paying attention it will likely just revert back to what it was.

  28. ”The new LOTO sounds a lot like the old LOTO. Speaking to Andrew Clennell she claimed that energy prices were putting people out of business and that it’s “because of an overreliance on renewables…”

The only way to ensure that the transition to renewable energy proceeds smoothly in Australia is to keep the Coalition out of office until it is unstoppable, ideally until it is near completion. Once Ms Ley is replaced by someone from the Right of the Liberals, the Opposition will drop any pretence at concern for climate action.

Writing on social media, the MP said: “Today I was the first Aboriginal person to sit in the Speaker’s Chair in the House of Representatives as a member of the Speaker’s Panel.”

“It was a huge moment for the Parliament, but more importantly, it was a message to young Aboriginal people back home in the NT,” she said.

So despite weeks of haranguing by the Murdoch press, the percentage of Australians who think Albo not getting a meeting with Trump is Albo’s fault is lower than the Liberal primary vote. Yawn.
