Morgan: 57.5-42.5 to Labor (open thread)

Roy Morgan’s third poll since the election appears to portend a return to its usual weekly schedule.

It appears Roy Morgan may have resumed its weekly federal polling schedule, offering a new poll conducted last Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1522. This is consistent with its pre-election form and in contrast with its other two polls since the election, which had longer field work periods and bigger samples. The results, however, are much the same: Labor leads 57.5-42.5 on two-party preferred (56.5-43.5 when based on preference flows at the election rather than respondent allocation), in from 58-42 in last week’s result, from primary votes of Labor 36.5% (down one), Coalition 30.5% (down half) and Greens 12% (steady), although One Nation perks up two-and-a-half points to 8.5%.

Although with Starmer being so utterly useless a hail-Mary switch to Burnham in 2028 is probably Labour’s only chance (Burnham’s 3rd term as North West Mayor is up in ’28)

  2. PHON looks like it’s the parking lot for the grumble vote. Other than that, this poll seems to show the electorate simply settling down again, closer to how it voted in the recent election.

Ha ha. Sussan Ley is the leader of the Liberal Party and Opposition Leader and Pauline Hanson isn’t and just an irrelevant Cross Bench Senator. 😀

  4. Ray(UK),
    Good to see you!

I actually have a ‘women’s intuition’ opinion about Keir Starmer. I think he’s doing the big things right, like working to reinsert the UK into the EU, helping Ukraine, ameliorating the worst of Trump and dragging the UK out of the messes left behind by the Tories, but he’s just not great at the local politics and the vaudeville, as Paul Keating referred to it, which a prancing ponce like Farage is expert at and has the time to devote himself to. Honestly, from afar here I reckon that Rachel Reeves is the one who should go. All her instincts are wrong and it’s dragging Starmer down.

  5. Interesting article on the extent of China’s growing dominance of green technologies versus the US pivot back to.fossil fuels.

In China, more wind turbines and solar panels were installed last year than in the rest of the world combined. And China’s clean energy boom is going global. Chinese companies are building electric vehicle and battery factories in Brazil, Thailand, Morocco, Hungary and beyond.

At the same time, in the United States, President Trump is pressing Japan and South Korea to invest “trillions of dollars” in a project to ship natural gas to Asia. And General Motors just killed plans to make electric motors at a factory near Buffalo, N.Y., and instead will put $888 million into building V-8 gasoline engines there.

“Oil tanker damaged by blast weeks after visiting Russian ports, Bloomberg reports”
    https://kyivindependent.com/oil-tanker-damaged-by-blast-weeks-after-visiting-russian-ports-bloomberg-reports/

A tanker carrying 1 million barrels of oil experienced an explosion near Libya, its operator TMS Tankers said on June 30. The vessel, Vilamoura, is now being towed to Greece, where the extent of the damage will be assessed upon arrival.

The blast caused the engine room to flood due to water intake, though the cause of the explosion remains unclear, according to a company spokesperson.

The spokesperson confirmed that the crew is safe and no pollution has been reported. The incident comes amid a series of unexplained blasts targeting oil tankers that had previously visited Russian ports. In response, shipowners have started inspecting their vessels for mines using divers and underwater drones.

  8. @Ray (UK)

That’s all very well and good but the Torygraph ignores the fact that the party leader has to be an existing MP and not someone aspiring to be one – no matter how popular they maybe.

And there are specific rules for challenging a leader both the when and numbers required to initiate such a challenge.

And even if Starmer did resign the election rules are set down in the party rules agreed by annual conference.

There is no provision for fudging the nomination criteria like the Tories did when Truss was deposed and they set the MP nomination numbers so high only Sunak could meet them.

  12. Morning all. Thanks for the International roundup HH. There is still a real threat Trump will crash the US economy thanks to tariffs and inflation. The risk of that crashing the world economy is less than it would have been before, but not zero.

That being said, the local economic news is good. With inflation and interest rates down, wages up and super going up, things are looking good. The only problem is stopping further house price increases for the young.

Keating is flat wrong to say every new worker will retire with $3 million in super. This assumes an average 22 year old starting wage of $98000(!). The super $3m tax deduction cap reform is a good one, and needed.

Sunday night’s unrest came after several attacks in the West Bank carried out by Jewish settlers and anger at their arrests by security forces attempting to contain the violence over the past few days.
More than 100 settlers on Wednesday evening entered the West Bank town of Kfar Malik, setting property ablaze and opening fire on Palestinians who tried to stop them, Najeb Rostom, head of the local council, said. Three Palestinians were killed after the military intervened. Israeli security forces arrested five settlers.

    https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/jul/01/first-peoples-assembly-set-to-become-permanent-voice-to-victorian-parliament-with-crossbench-support

“Victoria will have a permanent Indigenous voice to state parliament, with the progressive crossbench throwing their support behind a plan to allow the First Peoples’ Assembly’s work to continue following treaty.

Guardian Australia understands the Victorian government will introduce a treaty bill to parliament later this year, which will formalise the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria as an advisory body.

According to a senior government source not authorised to speak publicly about the bill, it will see the assembly renamed and granted statutory powers in relation to matters affecting Aboriginal Victorians.
    :::
While the Greens, Animal Justice party and Legalise Cannabis are yet to see the bill, they have told Guardian Australia they support the assembly having a permanent role. This would give the government the numbers it needs for the bill to pass the upper house.
    :::
Enshrining the assembly in law as a permanent body would bring Victoria in line with South Australia, which became the first state to have an Indigenous voice to parliament in 2023.”

Ha ha. Sussan Ley is the leader of the Liberal Party and Opposition Leader and Pauline Hanson isn’t and just an irrelevant Cross Bench Senator.

Pauline Hanson is not an irrelevant Cross bench senator. Even though she did not campaign in May election, 3 PHON Senators are elected. Senate has 4 PHON Senators and alongwith Ralph babbit will not vote for any ALP government legislation.

  19. What has happened to the Sydney Morning Herald? It has become utterly obsessed with conducting witch hunts: against Maurice Terzini of Bondi Icebergs, the Merivale empire, some nonentity on the Nimitabel Council, etc, etc.

Conservative though it was for much of its history, the SMH had broadsheet values and tried to focus on the big issues of the day. Now it’s rapidly moving into ACA/Daily Mail territory. It clearly thinks that this is where it will get lots of clicks, but it’s rarely a good idea for highbrow institutions to nosedive into the mucky world of the lowbrow.

I’m sure most posters won’t care, but I find it a bit sad.

  20. “women’s intuition” as a contextless political insult makes people trust women less. It’s substituting “i don’t like him” with “women don’t like him” except you don’t speak for women, and you’ve inserted a discriminatory element, and provided ammunition to anti-women arguments. Those statements make it harder for women to be heard, and easy for people to dismiss them. Totally self-inflicted.

Although PB Chinese bashers will not like it, Chinese government and people are more smart about their future than USA people.

  22. In Australian energy news:

+ “Shortfalls in southern states and reliance on Queensland gas is compounded by uncompetitive market structures. Upstream gas markets remain highly concentrated and dominated by the Queensland LNG producers and their associates, who control over 90% of east coast reserves. The decisions they make about exports and development of their reserves are key drivers of domestic supply adequacy, competition, and market outcomes.” – ACCC Gas Inquiry 2017-2030: Interim update on east coast gas market

The ACCC make comments like this every year it seems. If the market has an uncompetitive structure maybe they should do something about it.

+ Apparently, it’s Energy Independence Day, due to the start of the federal $2.3 billion Cheaper Home Batteries Program:
    https://www.dcceew.gov.au/energy/programs/cheaper-home-batteries

“With the right policy, technology and consumer support, Energy Independence Day marks the commencement of Australia’s home battery revolution … Home batteries are no longer unaffordable – with the new rebates and no-interest loans they are now driving energy independence and lowering household costs.” – Clean Energy Council GM Distributed Energy Con Hristodoulidis

+ The Key Apprenticeship Program starts today:
    https://www.apprenticeships.gov.au/key-apprenticeship-program

“And we know that it works, because our New Energy Apprenticeship incentive has already seen 11,000 people go into the new energy sector, making sure that they can help deliver the shift to renewables, making sure as well that they will have good, secure jobs going forward,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters in Canberra.

+ State-owned green bank the NSW Energy Security Corporation (ESC) officially opened for business with $1 billion of funding for investment in large-scale storage and enabling assets:

Edit: Meanwhile, the media continue their obsession with Albo meeting Trump, maybe with the help of Gina.

  23. Starmer and Reeves are both the problem.

The buck stops with the PM and also, when a lot of the problems are economic, the Chancellor.

  24. Hi Meher Baba

I wouldn’t call this type of investigative journalism a witch hunt.

This type of alleged behaviour in any organisation should be exposed, particularly in powerful organisations that may have influence or control over the relevant authorities.

Good to see the SMH having the guts to go over these entities, and they wouldn’t be doing so unless they felt the cases were legally sound.

  25. Well, it’s easy to know what Stefanovic & Abo were attempting here:

[‘Albanese’s audio dropped out at a convenient moment on Nine’s Today show when host Karl Stefanovic put to him that Trump had disrespected the prime minister by failing to find time to meet with him, despite Australia’s history as a steadfast US ally.

Stefanovic suggested the prime minister tell Trump to “bugger off” but Albanese did not respond, saying his audio had failed.

When co-host Sarah Abo repeated the question, Albanese disagreed with the premise.

“No [I do not feel insulted] at all,” Albanese said. He said he respected Trump and the president had repaid that.

“He’s been respectful of me as well,” he said, citing the president’s call to congratulate him after his election win.’] – SMH

These types of antics will continue until the King gives Albanese an audience, and that won’t happen until the Rudd problem is sorted.

  26. Bow your head lower Mavis. You have to touch your forehead to the muck so that they know you really mean it. Bonus points for kissing the feet.

Being the first day of the month there is a heap of monthly NEM records. The main one being:

    https://openelectricity.org.au/records/au.nem.battery_discharging.energy.month.high?datetime=2025-06-01T00_00_00&offset=10_00&focus=1748700000000

Note the jump from 91 GWh in May to 128 GWh in June.

    SL
Does that mean more Australians, especially good people of SA and Vic, are using batteries than before for their electricity consumption?

  30. meher baba @ 9.09am
    Fully agree.
Although there were important principles at stake, I too thought that two double page spreads was way too much overkill and more important issues were ignored.
Hopefully, todays’ SMH will be highlighting the significant reforms which take effect for the majority of all Australians.
I read Pegasus’ comment, yesterday, regarding the National Wage Case and what it considered to be a poor outcome.
It is common for all parties to such matters to set an arbitrary claim.
The Unions/ workers advocates set an amount, usually greater than what they expect to be awarded.
The Employers set a lower amount.
The court makes a determination, usually, but not always about the mid-point.

I’m off to purchase my SMH, now!

If America is only cooked because of America’s actions then they are facing consequences for their actions. But that is not the case. Since, America releases world’s 25% carbon emissions, it is cooking the world in the process.
