Morgan: 58.5-41.5 to Labor (open thread)

A large sample post-election poll confirms the obvious fact of Labor’s federal dominance.

The first federal poll since the election is what will presumably be the resumption of the regular weekly Roy Morgan series. This accumulates poling conducted over the month since the election, encompassing 5128 respondents from May 5 to June 1. The result is strong for Labor even by the standards of post-election honeymoons, with a two-party preferred reading of 58.5-41.5, presumably based on respondent-allocated preferences. This compares with what looks like being an election result of 55.3-44.7, based on the almost complete determination of the AEC. The primary votes from the poll are Labor 37% (34.6% at the election), Coalition 31% (31.8%), Greens 11.5% (12.2%) and One Nation 6% (6.4%). With its large sample, the accompanying release features breakdowns by state and age cohort.

    Sydney Stooge Celebration – update

C@t is going to make the booking for our Sydney Bludgers (and others) post election celebration. She’s aiming for a private dining room big enough to accommodate us at 9 Dragons. Therefore we need to know numbers!

Post if you’re coming and I’ll do the round up and let her know.

And a special shout out to Victoria: if you are heading Sydney way 27 June you’d be more than welcome to join. Bring OH and make a weekend of it. Stay at the Sofitel Darling Harbour and you can almost literally door to door hotel to restaurant on the light rail. So simple!

I’m so ‘in’ for this: a succulent Chinese meal!

Also, having now gone under the knife today to repair an inguinal hernia, next on my ‘to do’ list will be to see what arrangements can be made for a visit to the McLeay’ s distillery for interested parties. I think double stacking Friday may be a bit much, but now that Mark McLeay is back in town I’ll check out options. Are there any preferred times and dates that week (or next). As mentioned before, I was thinking of asking mark to give us the opportunity to distill some gin and combine the day with a lunch at the craft brewery next door.

Confessions tickets booked and I’m in like Flynn! Actually Errol Flynn anchored his then Yacht Sirocco in Townsvilles’ Ross Creek and lived in the City for some time. There is now a Restaurant in Palmer Street on the Creek named after the Yacht. But I Digress.

AE I am out of Sydney on the 29th. So maybe I can’t make the distillery visit this time. But a future visit is always in the offing. Is this the distillery Pauly McLeay told me about??

That it might be, it’s also incredibly inconvenient. Especially in Victoria. 2 hours to get to the airport in the first place, 2 hours at the airport, 1 hour flight if lucky, 2 hours disembarking and getting transport to accommodation once there.

I’d honestly rather spend the day on a train.

    Solar Quotes is the site.

Can’t recommend it highly enough for anyone looking at solar and battery.

Finn Peacock who runs the site is ex CSIRO.

Thanks! I have now entered my details, and we are on the path to rooftop solar, batteries, and (very importantly for me) becoming part of a virtual power plant (VPP), helping to stabilise the grid.

Solar quotes has an interesting business model: “When people fill out our quote form (like you just did!), we refer you to a professional, highly-vetted installer in our network, who pays us a small referral fee (whether they make a sale or not). Please note that they do NOT pay us a commission for any sales – we only get a referral fee.”

With a bit of research, I find that they are a highly trusted business, and Finn Peacock’s professional credentials are excellent.

It is great that a very successful business can be built around knowledge and trust, two things that are lacking when you consult the plethora of businesses that offer you any services to do with electricity.

For the last few months, I have had calls from “mumble, mumble electricity, with the information that they can move me to a cheaper plan”. I only take these calls when I am waiting for another call from another number that I may not have prior knowledge of.

They seem to have stopped now. It may have something to do with my resolute answer:
Me: “Sorry, who did you say you were ringing from?”
Them: “your select electricity (or some such). this is an important call. We are ringing to save you money.”
    Me: “Ok”
Them: “can you tell me who your current electricity supplier is?”
Me: ” Why would I tell you that? You are a random person ring me from the internet”
Them: ” beep beep beep ….”

It may or may not be on.

Have a look at the artist’s impression the Stadium! What a rip snorter. I’m not a taswegian and I have no Devil in the fight – but by Dog, I’d love to see the mighty Hawks play there. (That is a personal view from an AFL Fan’s point of view…..)

If an election is called and one occurs the MPs elected must form a government of one kind or another. 4 elections in 7 years is ridiculous. Heavens to Betsy, they could have almost paid for the stadium with all that expense.

Trump is going to manufacture his insurrection!

Its hard to tell if people are serous or sarcastic about the proposed Hobart stadium.

Bur again from an outsiders perspective, I mainly see it as a significant development opportunity in thr State capital that brings public transport oriented development and nightlight to the CBD.

I actually don’t give a stuff about the AFL part of the equation – the structural issue is the state’s embed economic model of tiny and disparate economic opportunities, and everyone is fighting over scraps rather than trying to build something big.

Now I know the last thing Tasmanians want to do is to change for my pleasure (and noting that matters of personal finance are distasteful here), but me as a potential spending tourist I can currently choose:

    – Tasmania: long drives between tiny settlements with expensive food and accommodation, and major centres largely dead … or:

    – Overseas: say Japan, a concentrated hub of excitement where everything is cheaper and more accessible.

Tasmania is currently set up for grey nomads, which is a long, long way from where I am at. And while I don’t expect a bullet train between Hobart and Burnie, they got to give me something to want me to consider travelling elsewhere.

The Stadium is a chance to start making Hobart a “place”, rather than a retirement village attached to a Saturday morning market.

  10. Fess: I’ll be there at the Nine Dragons on the 27th. I’m looking forward to catching up with my existing friends and also meeting Upnorth and TPOF.

PS: I’m going to be on the road a bit over the next two weeks and won’t be able to catch as much of PB as I usually do, so if there are any last minute changes of plan that come up over that time, could you please post these again on the evening of the 26th or morning of the 27th and I’ll make a special effort to look.

Some interesting content on this French video showing onboard a Suffren SSN in dock for maintenance. The (AI?) translation to English is pretty disjointed but gives you the gist of what is said. Details of the SSN maintenance program are really interesting. I hope the RAN is studying this sort of stuff.

  12. Meanwhile in Tasmania, the Governor has rejected Jeremy Rockliff’s advice to call a new election

Official secretary of Tasmanian governor Barbara Baker says she is “taking the time necessary to give due consideration to all available options” and will again meet with premier Jeremy Rockliff “by the end of the week”

  13. BK, your dad must have been a fair cricketer to get hired as an overseas player in the Lancashire League.

I read last night that King O’Malley was the last survivor of the first Parliament – passing away in 1953 aged 95. He stayed a Labor man during the Conscription split and lost his seat in Darwin against the pro Conscription candidate.

I’m so glad he outlived the Rat Hughes who died the year before.

Yes, ok on the whole thanks. Just a bit old and decrepit. Also a bit sad because our wonderful 20 year old cat finally left us the other day.

However, as we have discussed on here in the past, a trip to Queensland with my other half is now in the offing! She would have come along to the shindig on the 27th but unfortunately has a prior commitment.

I’m also actually quite unwell at the moment with RSV. It has knocked the stuffing out of me. Sigh……

RSV is really nasty. Take care of yourself!

  19. I think that, at the very least, the Tas Governor would need to ask Dean Winter to step up, and then to consult the Chief Justice over a shandy or two.

  20. Latest from Dr Bonham on Tasmania. Agree Sprocket a humiliation for the Liberal Party.

“6:45 The Governor will not make an immediate decision. She is right to be exploring all options carefully even if as currently seems to be the case an election cannot be avoided. In particular she will need to hear from possible alternative Premiers, at the least including Dean Winter. The Governor will meet with Premier (for now) Rockliff again before the week is out.”

My sympathies MB. We love our moggies too and they snuggle closer every winter. They know when you love them back.

  22. Not sure what the Governor of Tasmania is going to find. She calls Dean Winter and says “are you willing to form government?” and he politely says No. She calls Guy Barnett and probably gets a “No, I am loyal to Rockliff”. So she calls Cecily Rosol and asks if the Greens make a government, and that fails to get confidence on the floor of parliament.

Basically, Labor think they can improve their position at an election and the Liberals are of the opinion that it is better to go to the polls now then in a few months when a government with a different leader falls over because a new stuff up.

Thanks. I think the forthcoming Tassie winter was always going to be one too many for our dear old tabby. But he had the most wonderful life, especially in the last 2 1/2 years when he ruled the roost as the last surviving cat at our house (thereby earning himself the nickname “Bradbury Cat”).

Definitely hoping for a Solar Eclipse trip in July 2028 though.

I will get onto this. After working out that way so many times, and organising astronomy weekends, with accomodation at local camping grounds and country pubs, I think I can organise a good and authentic experience.

And, I think, we will not at all be troubled by the many professional tours being organised at the same time. They occupy a very different niche, and I am very happy for them to do so. Astronomy tourism brings much needed dollars into outback NSW, and helps make people scientifically and technologically literate.

But I will let Terry Durack have the last word on why we should have a pub-centred 2028 eclipse tour in western NSW for the eclipse:
Five things I’ve learnt travelling Australia
    1) Go to the pub
You’re in outback Queensland? Go to the pub. You’re in a trendy inner-city suburb? Go to the pub. You’re in a seaside resort town? Go to the pub. Italy has the trattoria, France has the Bar Tabac, Vienna has the coffee house, but we have the local pub. It’s where the oldies, kids, locals and blow-ins all come together in a happy mess over a chicken parmigiana, cold beer, and a game on the telly.

  25. Re the Tassie Governor’s response to Rockliff.

I don’t really read it as a snub. There is clearly a mathematical pathway to a Labor minority government if the party were to form an alliance with the Greens and some of the independents and former JLN members. Winter might have told the media that Labor will not ally itself to the Greens, but I’m sure the Governor will want to discuss the possibility with Winter in private before she considers calling an election.

This seems to me to be a perfectly logical and sensible approach by the Governor.

  26. However, as we have discussed on here in the past, a trip to Queensland with my other half is in now the offing!

Sorry about the cat. But wonderful! Nothing lifts the spirits like a wedding, and PB has never had a wedding before.

    Divorces

    But never a wedding.

  27. Less than 48 hours after Juan Fernando was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement at his job at a clothing factory, he was transported back to the country he had left behind.

The 23-year-old member of Mexico’s Indigenous Zapotec community told his parents that he had been dropped off at an international bridge and told to cross back to Mexico, the family recounted in an interview with The Washington Post. He told them he thought he had signed a consent to a coronavirus test but may have inadvertently signed off on his deportation instead.

His arrest at Ambiance Apparel in Los Angeles on Friday and subsequent removal happened so quickly that his parents said they didn’t have time to obtain an attorney. They said he has no criminal record and had lived in the United States for four years.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/2025/06/10/la-ice-raids-deported-migrants/

That’s the point. Sweep you up on some trumped up documentation, deport you quickly before you have time to mobilise legal defence.

I’m sorry for the people caught up in this, but Trump promised to do this during the election. Mass deportation now was only ever going to be ‘mass’ if it included the non-criminals, non gang bangers and undocumented who have lived in the states for years.
