Campaign launch day miscellany (open thread)

Labor how-to-vote cards, a potential plan B for Amelia Hamer, and Labor’s view of things in Sydney marginals.

A few days short of the half-way mark, both parties will today conduct what are quaintly known as campaign launches, which in effect are set pieces for Anthony Albanese to announce an expanded home deposit guarantee and Peter Dutton to promise a one-off income tax offset. Hopefully there will be a poll or two along shortly – consecutive Newspolls over the previous two weeks suggest one of those might be along late afternoon, but beyond that I can offer no further insight.

The latest:

• Labor’s member for Macnamara, Josh Burns, has announced his how-to-vote card will not direct preferences, so as not to put the Greens ahead of the Liberals as normal. Mohammad Alfares of The Australian reports “some Labor members” have related “internal rumblings about replicating Mr Burns’ move nationwide”. Macnamara aside, the seats where it could realistically make a difference are limited to the three held by the Greens in Brisbane.

• With suggestions former Victorian state Liberal leader John Pesutto may be driven to bankruptcy and from parliament over his defamation payout to party colleague Moira Deeming, John Ferguson of The Australian reports “powerbrokers” are considering Amelia Hamer as a potential candidate for a Hawthorn by-election if she is unsuccessful in recovering Kooyong from Monique Ryan.

Alexi Demetriadi of The Australian reports Labor is more concerned about the south-western Sydney seat of Werriwa, held by Anne Stanley on a margin of 5.2%, than Parramatta, held by Andrew Charlton on 3.6%.

Correct. That put down wouldn’t have been in the prepared speech.

Typical “suck up kick down” attitude, as demonstrated by John Bolton.

Dutton has a mere Bachelor of Business degree, but, unlike Keating, he is far from a life longer learner.

  2. “I watched the 2024 DNC and RNC for the US election, tone was about the same, result not what was wanted. Let’s not get in front of ourselves. ”

Its still a contest ……. nuthin settled …. but at the moment i would rather be ALP than the other mob.

Mr Nasty, who is a uni drop out, jealous of someone with a Ph D?

    Say it ain’t so?
    ===================================================

It is very consistent with Dutton and the LNP running with Trump type ideology.

  4. So, ALP framing this as helping people get out of rentals. Nice spin.

Hmmmmm ….. could be very much applicable to inner suburb infill programs.

  5. Reaction to launches. on Betfair Labor drifts from $1.32 to $1.38 then firms back to $1.35.

Overall drop of implied win probability from 76% to 74%.

More cheering now on the Medicare Card show.

Albo’s speech is a verbal listicle, it’s not engaging and like usual lacks a sense of vision.

I am sorry that the English language is linear in nature (one work after the other).

You are right to be mad that Labor has not implemented a new quantum state/multi fractal language that hits you with the ideas simultaneously.

Lol! Auto tax deduction of $1000 for all. 🙂 Suck on that Dutton. ALP will have this already in the Budget. 🙂

Sure, but at the marginal tax rate of the median income – it is fairly small beer. It all adds up I guess and I am sure someone has done that and will tell us.

  8. I suspect Paul A won’t be allowed to continue his 15 hour a fortnight speech writer internship in the LOTO offices following g that LNP launch

  9. Albanese, spoke extremely well. Best I’ve heard him speak in terms of tone, inflection, body language etc.
He wasn’t the best in the past.. he seems to have done alot of work on it.

  10. “No big Hail Mary announcement… clearly the Govt feels they’re in a good place.”

solid, reliable, a lot of this is feeding into the “safe pair of hands” thing at just the right time.

Albo did well. His presentation on this as good as i have seen it.

  11. Leftie,

“I suspect Paul A won’t be allowed to continue his 15 hour a fortnight speech writer internship in the office of the Leader of the Opposition that was arranged through NDIS supported work experience pathways program following g that LNP launch”

    Dude, just no.

Everyone cannot be a Keating or a Modi

  14. Next week will be crucial. If the stock market has found it’s bottom and start edging up, the Trump factor will subside and polls will even up. I still think Anthony Green has the right of it 2pp will not be as important as the seat by seat race, actually his wording was stronger.

    “Oh dear”.. what an understatement…

    The Guardian
Image emerges of Jacinta Price wearing Maga cap – one day after she says Coalition will ‘make Australia great again’
Exclusive: Guardian Australia obtains social media photo of Northern Territory senator in a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat – as Nationals leader David Littleproud insists her use of slogan was ‘slip of the tongue’

Coalition politicians have continued to downplay Jacinta Nampijinpa Price’s apparent referencing of Donald Trump’s signature Make America Great Again slogan at an election rally, calling it a “slip of the tongue” even as images emerge of the shadow minister and her husband wearing Maga hats just months ago.

“We all make slips during the campaign. This was an inadvertent one by Jacinta. And if that’s the level of debate that the Labor party want to bring to this, rather than policy about the fact that there are Australians tonight that won’t be able to afford dinner, all they’ve got to run on, on their record is smear and innuendo.”

“I think Australians want the adults in the room to run the show. Not one that’s just going to try and tear people down for slip of the tongues.”

Has there ever been such a shambolic election campaign ?

  16. Albo looked sharp and on message! Slicker looking launch than the Liberal one.
I would have liked more for welfare recipients and the genuinely poor, but overall this current government are way preferable to some Aussie version of Trump/Musk.
And those Liberal promises today smell like dog turds to me.
As for Dutton earlier implying Albo is a drunk, what on earth was that nonsense?

  17. @steely – nah, the stock market heightens the Trump factor but it’s not the driver.

Dutton’s approach has been extremely lazy for the most part – he was relying on anti-incumbency to shunt waverers over to them … it’d take more than a week of relative stability to right things.

The most powerful weapon in politics is pre-conceived notions.

FTR I agree the 2PP is becoming increasingly less indicative – but in this election it seems the LNP by not trying to win back Teal seats (I dare say actively alienating them), except by osmosis, will end up boosting its position in seats they can’t win. So even if there is a swing to the LNP – the payoff could be v limited.

  18. Whether election launch set pieces win or lose elections I really don’t know.
However, a conservative view would be that Albanese made a sound, positive, safe and forward looking presentation. I think he has come a long way in three years.
Reports on the Dutton effort and presentation not so sanguine and even the ABC crew conceded the Labor presentation was “slicker” – whatever this means.
The photo of Jacinta with her MAGA cap on is now something like a albatross around Dutton’s neck.
It demonstrates she is out of her depth and should have just stuck to being a symbol – of something.
Can anyone take seriously she has the ability of aptitude to take on board the role of cost cutting in any system way the LNP hope for? I doubt it.
She has probably done as much damage as anyone in relation to the LNP’s election campaign so far.
The symbolism alone is worth heaps to Labor.

  19. Dandy it was long edited before you decided to repost it. He has been trawling through the PB historical archives and reposting them in current threads to ‘gotcha’ me of late. Obviously that was his way of sending a message to me that he’d like me to focus on him for what ever reason. What am I supposed to do ?.

“No big Hail Mary announcement… clearly the Govt feels they’re in a good place.”
solid, reliable, a lot of this is feeding into the “safe pair of hands” thing at just the right time.

Is it tho? Because there is a flip side to ‘solid, reliable, safe’ that Dutton can take advantage of.

Albo did well. His presentation on this as good as i have seen it.

Your last part is right tho. To make safe, solid, reliable sell, Albanese needs to cut through – both on stages like this and also to the great unwashed who get there info elsewhere.

  21. Well not exactly exciting television but I watched both launches, Labor’s clearly more upbeat

I think the campaign just got a lot more interesting, at least we have some more substantial policies to debate now, especially around housing and to a lesser degree on tax

Swing and a miss by Albo on the Greens, is he really promising everyone can buy a home when a decent chunk of the population will rent forever? Nothing like managing expectations lol

  22. Labor supporters of mature age won’t forget Whitlam’s “It’s Time” election campaign in ’72. Due to its glitz, star power, catchy campaign theme & of course the great man himself, it will probably never be replicated. That said, Albanese did a good job launching Labor’s campaign today. Particularly impressive in my view was his emphasis on Medicare & the PBS – two issues that most voters would be concerned with under a Tory government. I’ve got a strong feeling that despite all the goodies Dutton has promised, the electoral pendulum won’t swing his way.

  23. Anti-incumbency in a first term Government? Nah this is a Trump election to the extent the correlation between Trump coming in and the ALP coming back in the Polls is very strong and the ALP know it, every opportunity to marry Dutton and Trump is jumped on. The irony… and Canada wow…Trump the gift that keeps giving. But I stand by it 2 weeks of an increasing market and things will even right up.

Not accuse someone of having a disability as an insult? Is that too difficult? Your post was disgusting.

  25. @Steely – yes, this is not the old “it’s time” issue it was a global annoyance at incumbents – which we saw everywhere.

I think the election terms are more or less settled and short of a black swan event, very little will inherently change things beyond the margins.

You think otherwise … we’ll find soon enough.

Also – maybe Dutton et al shouldn’t have spent as much energy cosplaying as MAGAists? And spending time with MAGAists? And being bankrolled by MAGAists?

What the Prime Minister said was, ‘It is not how you fall that counts. It is how you get up.’

  28. The teals & labor would be well off creating a fake liberal party flyer/pamphlet with Price in the MAGA hat and the list of trump inspired liberal policies to send out to inner city electorates.
HOW TO MAKE AUSTRALIA GREAT AGAIN!
    * DOGE TO CUT FRONTLINE EDUCATION, AGED CARE & CHILD CARE STAFF TO PAY FOR GROWTH INDUCING TAX CUTS FOR THOSE MAKING $480,000 AND ABOVE!

Trump isnt capable of staying quiet – he will stay in the news and it will make many Australians uneasy. But it matters not. Dutton appears to have given up on Teal seats and going all in for the burbs.

  31. A scare campaign and more debt that’s labor today.

Libs are back in it need to get a swing going as labors vote is as soft as and could swing massive and late.

If people on here are right that people are tuned out then when they tune in labor has nothing to show except debt, health and education and crime going terrible and the economy not growing and inflation still increasing month on month.

Holding up a Medicare card really?

    Price needs more airtime!

Loved no welcome to country at libs event.

Good looks like libs have decided to embrace trump!

Oh Labor is lucky libs did not mention AFP tobacco wars fiasco!

  32. Inflation generally keeps going up sparky… unless you want deflation and a downward pressure on wages… I mean I know that’s what Gina wants, but…

Also kind of hilarious when the Lib policies are unfunded and more inflationary.

And that’s the last oxygen I give you.

    ======================================================

The false allegation about drunkenness wasn’t made by Labor. That grubby behavior was totally LNP.

  34. So the latest Trump roll back on Electronics turns out not to be no tariffs on Electronics but instead Chinese Electronics will be Tariffed the 10% applying to everyone and the extra 20% Fentanyl Tariff. So it is 30%…..
This is just so confusing. I am glad I am not an American importer.

  35. What a shambolic embarrassment for Jacinta Price and the LNP. Let’s face it, she’s never been known for her honesty but just hours after denying it, there she is wearing a MAGAt cap.

  36. First reported in Guardian now in Nine media:

“Commentators later said they could almost see the panic in Dutton’s eyes as the oxygen was immediately sucked out of the Mount Pleasant Bowling Club in Perth.

Things weren’t very pleasant after that.

Intense media interest (well, you can hardly blame us), later resulted in Price’s own surprise that she had aped US President Donald Trump’s (in)famous slogan.”
