Resolve Strategic: 55-45 to Coalition (open thread)

The first federal poll published since the cut in interest rates finds the Labor vote headed in the same direction.

The monthly Resolve Strategic poll for the Nine Newspapers offers cold water for the notion that an interest rate cut might have improved Labor’s fortunes, giving the government its worst result for the term: Labor is down two points on the primary vote to 25%, the Coalition is up one to 39%, the Greens are steady on 13%, and One Nation is up two to a new high of 9%. Having earlier shied away from two-party measures, the pollster is evidently now regularly publishing respondent-allocated figures, which in this case have the Coalition lead blowing out from 52-48 to 55-45. Applying 2022 election preference flows would have it at 53-47.

There are only slight movements on leadership ratings, with Anthony Albanese and Peter Dutton both up a point on both approval and disapproval, Albanese to 37% approval and 58% disapproval and Dutton to 41% approval and 51% disapproval. Dutton leads 39-35 as preferred prime minister, out from 39-34. The poll was conducted Tuesday (the day of the rate cut) to Sunday from a sample of 1506. A second opinion may be along later this evening from Freshwater Strategy in the Financial Review.

UPDATE: No respite for Labor from Freshwater Strategic, which has the Coalition’s two-party lead out from 51-49 last month to 52-48 on respondent-allocated preferences, from primary votes of Labor 31% (down one), Coalition 41% (up one) and Greens 13% (steady). Buried beneath these numbers is Labor’s one bit of good news: Anthony Albanese is up three on approval to 35% and down four on disapproval to 46%, Peter Dutton is steady at 36% and up four to 44%, and Albanese opens up a 45-43 lead as preferred prime minister after a 43-43 result last time. The report also says there was “a three-point increase in support for the notion the country was headed in the right direction and a four-point increase in the belief among respondents that their households would be better off in a year”. The poll is in the print edition of the Financial Review, and will presumably appear in the online edition in the early hours. It was conducted Friday to Sunday from a sample of 1038.

I should also make note of last week’s quarterly Tasmanian state poll from EMRS: Liberal down one to 34%, Labor down one to 30%, Greens down one to 13% and Jacqui Lambie Network up two to 8%. Jeremy Rockliff’s lead over Labor’s Dean Winter as preferred premier is out from 43-37 to 44-34. The poll was conducted February 11 to 18 from a sample of 1000.

  1. This is an interesting tactic from tne Labor corridor crawlers that inhabit the various state offices and staffer teams of federal ministers.

The last thing Labor should be prioritising are dirt units over the prosecuting and selling of positive policy. Perhaps Mr Simon was spooked by the sensationally manic resolve 2pp. In any case it was ill convinced. Labor won’t win a dirt unit campaign against the king of smeer, shit and outright lies the LNP

Well Dutton has categorically denied he was privy to confidential information. So in the absence of proof to the contrary he is clear of legal issues. Politically it may hurt a bit but eventually die out.”

I’ve got a feeling there is quite a but more on the matter of dutton’s integrity over the next few months!

Stinker, please desist before you dig a deeper hole. I’m off.
    ————-
I’m truly confused, are you ok Mavis? I’m struggling to see what I or anyone else has said on this topic that’s so objectionable, or what hole is being dug?

    Anyway, hooroo, rest well.

  4. Given that Big No and Little No combined to block this initiative for over a year, this is pretty impressive progress in the year that the scheme has been up and running. Better than L’twit’s bullshit denigration of it (which surprise surprise is very ‘Andrew Bragg adjacent’). Also, clearly not a scheme that is confined to the major capital cities, despite The Wombat’s claims to the contrary.

Imagine how much more could have been acheived by now without the combined efforts of Big No and Little No. Max Hyhen-blather deserves to lose his seat for this reason alone.

    Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
    ——————
The thing is, this isn’t even an extraordinary claim, really – the coincidence is there such that a claim of something dodgy happening is an easy inference to draw. But such a claim requires at least some evidence, of which there is none at this stage.

Will a Malcolm Turnbull diary entry do?

Quote: ” You asked for miracles, Theo, I give you the F.B.I..”

  7. “There has not been a better time in living memory to be a white, conservative, heterosexual male. There will be one though: next year, and every successive year thereafter.”

Smoko II expecting a win by the modern LNP then.

  8. Err Donald Trumps business dealings and nothing happened to him Dutton would not even make the tenth page of what Trump has got up to.

    Nothing burger reeks of desperation.

Noticed one of the mean girls would not apologise to Reynolds today.

  9. If spud dropped a few million into the bank shares and then made a couple of million a few days later, then that’s a decent story.
I haven’t seen volume mentioned anywhere but he may have to actually explain himself soonish.
Can see a tummy rub with Ray or Benny coming up in the next 24 hours.

  10. Actually I think a Turnbull diary entry stating Dutton was advised of the information regarding the bank bailout would certainly do. That would be a tough political hurdle for Dutton to overcome as well.

If that were to come to pass, let’s just hope that Malcolm hadn’t outsourced his diary management to Godwin Grech.

  12. The Dutton story ignored by the nine newspapers and the ABC news. Forget it, Laborites in here, this isn’t your miracle to turn around those polls.

Not claiming that will happen though. We do know Turnbull knew about it. We just don’t know if it was passed on.

One reason the Rudd Government might of discussed it with Turnbull is they wanted bipartisan support for the measure. If that was the case Turnbull would very likely discuss it with senior colleagues to see if they would give that support or not.

  14. Let us see if Murray Watt has the courage to repeat the allegations without the protection of Parliament Privilege.
Ditto for mean girl herself, Ms Gallagher.

  15. The evidence is that Dutton made a singularly well-timed bet when markets were in a highly distressed state. The Commonwealth then announced it would guarantee bank deposits….essentially taking risk out of their balance sheets. This was, as I recall, not completely unexpected. Rudd brought considerable relief to the markets with that promise. Who knows what induced Dutton to act? Only he would be able to tell us. For sure he will stay out of the fray.

Since voters believe politicians are all crooked – we remind each other of this every day – this account will only affirm what voters already think: Dutton is ‘like all the rest…no better/no worse…same/same…’

  16. How much money was involved in the share trading?

Presumably it’s beyond the statute of limitations but that’s politics. If it was really bad you think it would have come up before. It has been public record for like 15 years.

  17. Entropy we just have to wait and see what further information comes out over the next few days. Prudence says Dutton should make a personal statement on the issue or else it will continue to simmer.
I doubt Turnbull would have advised any of his ministers who didn’t need to know.

How do you accumulate $4.3 million as a politician after a divorce?
    ======================================================

Albo’s ex partner was well off too. Though no where near the likes of Dutton’s $300 million. Which would be $150 million each in a divorce i guess.

  20. Dio it’s a federal issue so doubt a statute of limitations would apply in a serious case of insider trading. I could be wrong so look forward to comment from the legal people here.

The only mean girl is the extremely nasty lying cow herself, Reynolds. She betrayed her so called friend by making up lies about her.

  22. We know one thing, this will be a nasty and probably defamatory election campaign, and that’ll be from the Labor side. And the role of chief mud thrower has gone to Murray Watt.
As if something from 16 years ago is at all relevant to today.
This smacks of desperation and the politics of smear.

Like you have any qualms about the pro-Coalition media going after Dan Andrews in the same way, even after he has quit office.

Don’t pretend to have the moral high ground here.

  25. The rumors about shoring up the banks was apparently widely spread before the announcement so it does not surprise me if quite a few people working in Parliament invested in some bank stocks that month. That someone aspiring to be Prime Minister did so shows very poor judgement.

I think the issue for Dutton is that he can’t really say the low share price of the bank stocks presented a wonderful opportunity to get into great businesses because he apparently sold most of these stocks within weeks. Which is apparently greatly out of character with his usual share market activity.

What it does remind me of is the trading of hedge funds. Which typically trade in and out of stocks very quickly, sometimes within weeks, days or minutes.

One strategy of hedge funds is called ‘event driven’ strategies. Event Driven strategies are when a trader gets hold of a piece of information that something dramatic is about to happen that will impact a stock price. They get in, the news breaks, the stock lifts, they get out. Some people call it insider trading.

  26. Labor may have made a fatal error by triggering the LNP dirt unit reprisals that will no doubt be incoming.

I just hope the wife beating and cocaine using accusations are allowed to freely fly against a certain candidate running for office

  27. Yeah …it sounds great doesn’t it Dem sausage

Looking forward to it …….LNP need to get owned on some of these issues.
Let the shit hit the fan and watch the spray land .

Your point is a good one in my opinion. In my experience people first go into the share market as long term investors not short term traders. Short term trading is very specialised. That Dutton should suddenly become one once for a short time and then not try it ever again. Is very unusual to say the least.

There has not been a better time in living memory to be a white, conservative, heterosexual male.

Interesting topic. The ideas that men have about themselves and women when men are in their 20s, 30s and 40s usually serve men better than they serve women. This is one of the skewing effects of patriarchy. Men are more easily able to acquire power and wealth while women tend not to. However, by the time men reach their 60s and 70s the ideas men have of themselves start to ensure that men die sooner and in worse health than women. The wealth that men accumulate is no use to them. They die off. They die sooner. They die in poor shape. They die unhappily.

I participate in a range of different activities. These include various sporting, creative and recreational pursuits. Participation tends to be feminised. Women are usually very much more numerous and more engaged in these activities. The interesting thing is that men frequently refuse to take them up. There are no barriers to entry. But men will not permit themselves to join the personally-rewarding, health-giving, life-boosting, socially-enriching things that women so readily adopt.

As men grow older they have to try very much harder than women to stay fit and strong and to live longer, healthy lives. They seem to have collectively prohibited themselves doing just that. They refuse to learn from women. Their sexism kills them.

Beyond a certain age men are less useful to the species than women. Men have evolved to live very much shorter lives than women. Men are expendable. So Scromo II….enjoy the prospect of male supremacy while you can. It won’t last forever. You will die sooner than the women you implicitly despise.

  32. Australian insider trading laws prohibit a person from trading in securities whilst in possession of nonpublic price sensitive information so the question is did Dutton use information not known to the public before it become public but widespread media speculation and gossip might be enough to put Dutton in the clear and by the time Dutton would have heard about it many others would also have known about it and that’s why Davidwh is right about it being hard to prove Dutton did anything illegal because it wasn’t hard to guess the government was going to support the banks to avoid a banking meltdown and Australian banks were very cheap at the time.

  33. I believe there exist some precedent cases which suggest that this issue should at the very least made available for public comment.
Politicians have been asked to resign for similar oversight previously.
If Dutton has done nothing deemed to be “wrong”, let the voters decide.
The remnant LNP Morrison Government set the standard from day one after Labor’s success after the last election.
It’s not the time for Dutton and his colleagues to suddenly become a little squeamish.
Let’s see who from the LNP shadow bench comes forward to support Dutton in the next few days.

Who fed the Dutton story to the media?

The bigger question would probably be who in the media decided to let this become the story?

So far their modus operandi would be to just ignore it completely and pretend it never happened, and instead run some story about how Albo ordered extra truffles for a state meal and that makes him a class traitor.

Could, perhaps, this be some sort of retribution against Dutton for speaking out against Trump?

[Who fed the Dutton story to the media?]

    W R Taylor and his investment advisor/accountant perhaps ?

  36. For all the talk about dirt units I do think there is a very good chance that this was just good work by Sam Maiden.

Remember when Dutton called her a ‘mad fucking witch’ in a text message which he inadvertently sent to her!

  37. The dying of men…so sad for me. I have friends. They have passed their three score and ten, and they are fading. They are not old. But they are passing their points of no return. They have had lives, some big and some small. And now their flames sputter. Too young. Their money is no use and their hands have no hold on power. The days run away with them….
