Two new polls out this evening, one being the first Newspoll result from The Australian in four weeks, showing the Coalition with an unchanged two-party lead of 51-49. Both major parties are up two on the primary vote, Labor to 33% and the Coalition to 40%, with the Greens down one to 11% and One Nation down two to 5%. Anthony Albanese is steady on 40% approval and up one on disapproval to 55%, while Peter Dutton is up two on approval to 40% and down one on disapproval to 51%. Albanese’s lead as preferred prime minister narrows from 45-37 to 45-41. The poll was conducted Monday to Friday from a sample of 1261.
Nine Newspapers has the monthly Resolve Strategic poll has Labor unchanged on 30%, the Coalition up one to 39%, the Greens down one to 11%, One Nation steady on 5%, independent down one to 11% and others up one to 4%. I reckon this to put two-party preferred somewhere between 50-50 and 51-49 to the Coalition, based on preference flows at the 2022 election. Anthony Albanese is up two on approval to 37% and down one on disapproval to 51%, while Peter Dutton is up four to 45% and down one to 40%. The two leaders are tied 37-37 on preferred prime minister, after Albanese led 38-35 last time.
The poll also finds 26% rating Donald Trump positively and 55% negatively, compared with 41% and 25% for Kamala Harris, with 40% considering Trump’s election will be bad for Australia compared with 29% for good. A series of findings on foreign policy questions, one being that 27% agreement that Australia should pause or withdraw from the AUKUS nuclear submarines arrangement with 35% disagreeing. The poll was conducted Tuesday to Saturday from a sample of 1621.

Per Lars’ predictions late last year…
No.1 – Dunkley by election. Correct prediction. The Vic Libs didn’t miss an opportunity to blow it.
No.2 – Albo replaced mid year by Jim. Fail
No.3 – Labor re-elected mid year in minority. Fail. No election was held this year.
No.4 – QLD Labor defeated, LNP minority. Half true/ half fail, but very close when compared to the polling earlier this year.
No.5 – Higgins / Lehrmann issue referred to the NACC. True. Referred on Mar-21.
No.6 – Neither Trump/Biden elected. A fail, but pause until Nov-26. Might be true if Don is locked up.
No.7 – Netanyahu to cling on. True. The tip out point passed on Oct-1. A piano could fall from the sky and land on his head before Dec-31, but that wasn’t suggested by Lars.
No.8 – Ukraine ceasefire by Dec. The ceasefire is pretty much now. Biden and Scholz were the main backers of the Ukraine war. Biden goes on Jan 20, and Scholz departs on Feb 23, if not earlier. Zelensky will have to deal with Trump. Scholz is now in the Rishi Sunak phase.
No.9 – Solomon Islands agree to Chinese ships docking etc. True.
No.10 – AUKUS huff n puff, but no substance. True.
South Australia’s Liberals are staring down electoral “annihilation”, party chiefs fear, after its disastrous Black by-election loss left it in its worst parliamentary slump in nearly a century. Party leaders held multiple crisis talks on Sunday after Labor’s poll “whitewash” in the wake of David Speirs quitting amid a drug supply charge, which he denies any wrongdoing. Party modelling, which sparked a major political row after being billed to taxpayers before the poll, is understood to have shown the Liberals were trailing four to five points pre by-election.
As a bitter internal blame game erupted over fears of a wipe-out at the 2026 state election, records show it’s the Liberal’s worst SA parliament result in almost 100 years. One senior Liberal warned of “annihilation” in 16 months’ time without dramatic change. “We were faced with a unique set of circumstances in Black, but it speaks to a broader problem that our brand is completely f … ed,” they said.
“Either (we all) buy into rebuilding or we will be obliterated in 2026. If this is any indication … there will be nothing left. There’s no time. Wake up or be wiped out.” “This outcome boils my p..s because we should be staring down a third term at the moment rather than losing another seat held by a former leader,” another said.
Other optimistic sources say unity is key between the right conservative faction that controls operations and the moderate branch with a parliamentary majority.

I think there may be federal implications for “Peter D” in S.A., although he only holds 3 seats in S.A.
He surely can’t lose any more. Sharkie will hang on, and Labor holds the other six, probably by bigger margins come the next election.

No.3: Major Fail
No.4: Fail – 9 year state government going for fourth term will lose – takes a wily political mind to predict that and still get it wrong predicting a minority LNP
No. 5: Success
No.6: Major Fail – yes Donald might get locked up and I might become Australia’s next top model at 63
No.7: Netanyahu to cling on – Partial success but not much of a prediction.
No.8: Ukraine ceasefire by December – TBD
No.9: Success but given the stance of Solomon islands government and its previous PM it was almost a fait accompli
No.10: Whats the definition of that? Haven’t we sent a truckload of cash over yonder? Is this part of the “huff ‘n’ puff”? Dont all major projects take a couple of years to launch? I’d say Fail.

Oh very amusing. But Lars has proven himself the prognosticator of prognosticators. And he certainly holds a far better success rate than other noted Seers such as Victoria.
_____________________
Victoria a noted Seer. That’s a bit of a stretch.
The Liberal/National/LNP are a series of State organisations – and it would appear in disarray in Victoria, SA and WA, at least.
At the core of this disarray is the conflict in the Party between the IPA (Free markets and austerity) and the Religious Right (so anti abortion for starters). In Victoria there is (yet another) Court case, on the heels of the Cormack fight which was wholly expensive and the reason the Liberal Party HQ CBD property was sold.
These fights continue unabated.
I do not know what the situation is in NSW or in Queensland but do note the Guardian headline that the newly minted Premier is staring down the pro Nuclear and anti abortion Party members, and warning them.
The abortion issue will come to a head because it has to given the numbers the Religious Right have hence influence.
As will nuclear given this is Dutton’s signature policy (along with encouraging people to withdraw their superannuation accruals in an attempt to undermine a Labor policy – the reason the Coalition exists).
In terms of the impact of inflation which has been the fact in a post pandemic world and also due to global conflicts and pressure on energy and food chain costs plus the ongoing impact of climate on insurance premiums, these are difficult times for governments, globally including in Australia (where we have a right wing media headlining individual cases of hardship exclusively)
Having said that it would appear instructive to cast an eye across the ditch, where a Right wing government was voted for on the basis of cost of living pressures, NZ now in recession courtesy of the austerity response impacting the economy.
It is noteworthy that the NZ situation, with a change of government, is not reported in the Australian media except reference to the number of Kiwis fleeing NZ for Australia is presenting a problem for the Australian government and its immigration numbers which are a response to the LNP’s racism putting fault for the housing “crisis” on immigrants, so dog whistling to racism (and look at the 31.000 at the SCG last night and no doubt the numbers at the Test matches over coming weeks so “spot the Aussie” – and they have not all come in over the last 2 years, just as the housing “crisis” did not start 2 years ago).
But we read plenty re Trump – and look at who and why he is assembling to “make America great again” – just not on the NZ experience or elsewhere where migration has become a dog whistle to racism, causing social tensions
nadia88:
Trump’s sentencing hearing before Merchan, J will probably result in the charges being thrown out (nolle prosequi) as Hope Hicks’s (Trump’s former White House Communications Director) evidence is inadmissible following the US Supreme Court’s decision affording a sitting president almost full immunity from criminal prosecution. I understand that DA Bragg will argue that the evidence of Hicks is not crucial to his case against Trump. If Merchan nollies the indictment, Bragg may appeal his decision, but I don’t think he will. The sentence could also be delayed until Trump’s out of office, but again, this is
highly unlikely. Merchan could also order a new trial, but this, too, is doubtful. It looks as though Trump fought the law & he won.

That’s fair. Perhaps you should ask yourself why?
Two weeks of both houses sitting in Canberra starting tomorrow.
It’ll be interesting to see whether the emphasis is on in legislation or campaigning together with election date speculation.
If there were to be an early 2025 election, the valedictory speeches will be readied and even delivered in the second of these current two weeks.
The pollsters will perhaps have a final go at measuring intentions during or just after this final sitting.
At long time to pass till February 4th, the first sitting day in 2025.
I would expect that most voters would like to get through the Christmas period without being bombarded with political hoo-ha.

We need to cut migration now, not only because we have already exceeded Australia’s carrying capacity, but also because we are one of the main countries causing climate change, so we should be prepared to be one of the main countries willing to accept the inevitable climate refugees.
___________
“Por qué no los dos?”
Ummm. Do you mean why not exceed Australia’s carrying capacity further AND then accept climate refugees? OR do you mean cause more climate change AND then accept climate refugees?
Because either one would be really, really dumb.
_________
The first actually. I am not one for pulling up the drawbridge. We should share the carrying capacity of the planet. It is one planet after all. The Indian subcontinent and African continent will have greater needs due to their population growth. Think of it as a form of permanent ecotourism 😉
If you are that worried, you could promote the Soylent Green solution. Should there be overage, drop the oldsters, don’t you think?
‘Give coal a chance to rein in energy risks’
One of the world’s major miners has urged Labor to slow down the transition from coal to renewables, as Donald Trump put in motion his plan to expand the fossil fuel sector in the United States.
About time people moved into the 21st century. Trump lives in the 1950s.
The summertime recess is usually accompanied by an improvement in polls for the incumbent, so it makes sense to wait until at least February before calling the election. Given it’s going to be a horribly hot summer, the electorate would not be keen on an election until well the temperatures start to cool down.
The calendar speaks for itself. The election will be called in mid-late March/early April, on the heels of a vote-winning budget that will contain measures the Liberals would want to oppose. Election to be in May. No doubt Dutton’s nuclear albatross will feature.
The Mindless Reactionaries are unelectable. They will soon be reminded of their incompetence and ideological irrelevance. They might think the election of Trump augurs well for them. They will learn once more that Australia is not the US.
Griff @ #2283 Sunday, November 17th, 2024 – 10:28 pm
Soylent Green? No, not necessary … yet.
But anyone – old or young – who still supports more fossil fuel extraction should be a candidate for carbon sequestration.
Numbers are important, so lets start with the Senate:
* QLD 2025 – the Senators elected in 2019 face re-election.
Labor got 1 Senator then. Based on the recent QLD election, Labor are on track for a 2nd Senator. The final Senator will be either a Green or PHON, depending on the spillover from the majors. Most likely a Green, but could be a PHON given the high right vote in QLD “today”.
My guess “today” is 3 LNP, 2 ALP, 1 GRN
* WA 2025 – If WA Labor can repeat their 2022 performance, they are on track to jag another Senator.
* TAS 2025 – I suspect the Labor voters who gave the JLN a tick, won’t do so next year for the simple reason her party kept the Libs in power at a state level. Jacqui may be in trouble next year and her seat could be a third ALP senate pick up.
So there is 2 (possibly 3) Senators the ALP should pick up on the raw numbers today.
Lower House:
* Grab a beer & read thru the Black by-election guide. There were some good posters who dropped by with their thoughts.
* Stonking 17.4% swing against the Libs in the southern suburbs of Adelaide. Could be purely state issues, but 17.4% is quite a memo. It has to be more than “state issues”, with that sort of swing.
* Yes the LNP is hitting the 40% mark on a few polls, but where is that primary falling. Is it locked up in QLD, the NT & outback NSW, because if it is it means their primary is probably lower in the area’s where they actually need it. 43-44% primary for the LNP in QLD means nothing, in a similar manner that a 44% primary for the ALP in the ACT means nothing. It’s seats which count, not primaries.
* and polling again, most of you remember the ridiculous polling before our 2019 election. Let’s not forget the polling fail for the recent U.S. election. Individual poll numbers mean JS. It’s trends which are important.
* Victoria – well as Deepers has just pointed out, that state is a clown show with regards to the Libs.
Peter Dutton can’t credibly campaign there with the State opposition leader involved in litigation with his own party members. You can’t run an election campaign in our 2nd largest state with party members suing each other and dragging each other through the courts. This is nonsense.
* WA – recent polling there suggests a 54.5 to 45.5 pro ALP 2PP split.
* NT – two seats up for grabs there. I think Solomon might be in strife for Labor but I can’t see Scrymgour losing Lingiari, despite it being a much softer margin.
We should have a few more polls out soon. Redbridge, Freshwater, Morgan & Essential.
We’ll have a slew of polls post parliament in early Dec, and then it all quietens down until mid/late Jan.
Well Medical Science is extending lives (and making the next generation wait longer to get their hands on their inheritance!)
So think of the cost savings by winding up medical science and the impact on the housing crisis of increasing the number of deaths of seniors
Win/win
As with building nuclear reactors on earthquake prone locations – which could kill more and as a cure for the economic woes we read about daily
In fact, anyone retiring from the workforce and putting their hand out for the government to support them should be lined up and executed (the other benefit being no need for Public servants noting the agenda of the USA immigrant now in charge of reducing government)
Then we can all go back to the good old days – except they were not that good

Agreed. The climate is not the same today as it was even just 10 years ago.
In my working life I was involved with two industries that depended on resource supply from the natural environment. One relied on the marine environment. The other on the terrestrial environment.
Both have been completely destroyed by climate change. They no longer exist. Rising temperatures have meant in each case that species could no longer complete their annual reproductive/growth cycles. Consequently their availability has crashed. In the marine case, species that had existed and replenished themselves in continuous, unbroken cycles since the last ice age have been all but exterminated. They will soon be gone for all time.
This is entirely attributable to climate change ….to heating of the environment. This is measurable. The changes have been recorded. They are recent. They are not isolated examples. There are many many more.
The bludger ‘Centre’ is an absolute nitwit. He is an imbecile. He is a smart arse. But he is as dumb as a bag of rocks.

Re Lars no 8 and your comment: “The cease-fire is pretty much now.”
No, Putin has not stopped his war, particularly as Zelenskiy is becoming more desperate, as shown by his public alarm about Scholz’s first phone call with Putin in nearly two years.
See the Menadue blog the other day, which published a recent statement from the Russian Ambassador, repeating a lot of lies except for two points: 1) don’t expect a quick end to the war; and 2) Putin does not resile from his claim to all of the 4 partially occupied provinces (apart from Crimea, which has been fully occupied for 128 months). The best Ukraine might get under Trump is to retain control of Kherson city.
Scholz has supported Ukraine but he was not a key figure in forcing Ukraine in April 2022 to reject a provisional deal with Putin that was endorsed by Kissinger, based on Ukrainian neutrality in exchange for a Russian withdrawal to the disputed territory it had before Putin’s invasion on 24 Feb 22.
The key front man for that disastrous imposition on Ukrainian sovereignty was B. Johnson. After Putin tried and failed to obliterate Ukrainian sovereignty, Johnson, acting with full US knowledge and support, told the Ukrainians they could not decide to end Putin’s war when he was weak.
Of course, neither Johnson nor the US could see that a long war would strengthen Putin. With friends like those, Ukraine was in a terribly tragic situation.
Sadly, in the end the aphorism for Putin’s war will remain the comment Putin made to the Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili at the time of his brief war with Russia in August 2008. Putin said to the Georgian leader: “your friends in the West will make many promises and not fulfill all of them, while you know I will keep my word to make your life a total misery”. (Not an exact quote but the gist of what Saakashvili recalled.)

Shorten’s valedictory is set for the next two weeks. A big signal.
Look at the calendar. The AEC have said 17 May is the last feasible day. The problem with that day is the election has to be called a week before Easter.
That is why Albo talked with Cook and so 1 Mar is credible. A 1 Mar election has to be called on 27 Jan, during the high pitch of the second coming of Trump.
Contra Jack Waterford’s waffle about mood and vibe elections on the Menadue blog last week, Albo will link Dutton to Trump. Easier to do on 1 Mar than later.
So, we now have two dictators & one wannabee dictator in charge of the three most powerful nations. What could go wrong?

Well put, but Labor gaining a third Senate seat in WA in 2025 is unlikely. After all, 2022 was better than they had expected. Hence why F. Payman was chosen as their no. 3 candidate.
Given the big Lib problems in SA, a third Labor senator there in 2025 looks more likely than in WA. But Don Farrell missed that opportunity in 2022. He is not a stellar campaign winner.
