Morgan: 50.5-49.5 to Labor (open thread)

Morgan also finds support for the monarchy at a high in the wake of the royal visit, while RedBridge offers federal voting intention results from Queensland.

Moving on from Queensland, up to a point, three items of polling to relate:

• The weekly Roy Morgan poll has Labor’s two-party lead in from 52-48 to 50.5-49.5, from primary votes of Labor 30% (down two), Coalition 37.5% (up one), Greens 14% (up half) and One Nation 5.5% (steady). Based on 2022 election flows, Labor leads 51.5-48.5, in from 53-47. The poll was conducted Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1687.

• Roy Morgan also has a result on republicanism that points to the brittleness of the support for the concept that polls generally record when the issue is out of the limelight. In the wake of the royal visit, a forced-response SMS poll of 1312 respondents conducted last Tuesday and Wednesday broke 57-43 in favour of retaining the monarchy.

• RedBridge Group has a timely result of federal voting intention from Queensland (hat tip to comments regular Nadia88) that has Labor on 28%, compared with 27.4% at the 2022; the Coalition at 41%, compared with 39.6%; the Greens at 13%, compared with 12.9%; and One Nation at 10%, compared with 7.5%. The poll was conducted several weeks ago, from October 4 to 16, from a substantial sample of 2315, and the full release contains detailed demographic breakdowns. It also finds Anthony Albanese on 34% approval and 53% disapproval; Peter Dutton on 39% and 42%; Steven Miles on 35% and 35%; and David Crisafulli on 40% and 31%.

It is probably why Burnett stayed with Labor. It is a cruel blow to the local and regional economy
    ——————–
Burnett is LNP held with nearly a two thirds vote share 2PP. I think you mean Bundaberg.

I’m not sure about the role of the Greens in killing off the Voice, Boer, but it would be nice to see the government be a bit crazy-brave, a bit Whitlamesque, for a change about an issue of decency and philosophical importance . Risk being wedged by Dutton et al. on an issue that could be worth the fight.

[Pulling the plug on the pumped hydro is just a vengeful act against renewables and global warming.]

Pulling the plug on not being around too long.
There’s a big difference between hating Labor enough and dismissing their superior infrastructure projects.

You raise a good point about how to defuse the flight upgrade situation. But then Albo needs to make that policy for everyone, with both Qantas and Virgin, so that there is no suggestion of favouritism.

That would be progress and a better outcome.

  5. Nobody is going anyway in the leadership stakes.

The whole QANTAS thing is a poo throwing exercise and everyone gets covered in it. Although it wasn’t started by the opposition – It was started as a way to get publicity for a book – they probably should have not gone as hard on it as they did as it was always going to blow back on them.

It won’t turn into a Ute-gate saga as Dutts has not gone as hard as Turnbull did in 2009 – Turnbull crazily went for the kill when at best it was going to be a destabilising blow if the allegations had been true. And even then Ute-gate didn’t end Turnbull leadership – Climate Change legalisation did (as it did in 2018 too).

I can’t see corruption in the upgrades as they are basically open to all Ministers and shadow Ministers. Where as free flights by individuals such as Gina Rinehart, who only speaks to LNP, is a different story.
    ——————————-
The issue isn’t Albo getting upgrade but Aston reckoned Albo called Joyce to get the upgrade and Albo would have known if he ever asked Joyce for upgrade but it took his office days to say it didn’t happen.

  10. Albo sends Mark Butler out to defend him against accusations by an an unnamed ministerial colleague of being a “sook” …

Health Minister Mark Butler has said the “last thing” he’d call Anthony Albanese is a “sook”, speaking out against an unnamed ministerial colleague that accused the Prime Minister of having a “massive sook-up” over media coverage of his Qantas flights upgrade controversy.

    Ya gotta laugh! 🙂

He needed to check with current and past staffers that it didn’t happen. Which obviously they then confirmed with him. Unlike Dutton who came out and said he never asked for free flights. Only to have to issue a correction afterwards, saying that his staff had done so on his behalf. Assuming you believe Dutton was unaware of them doing so in the first place?

Yes, you gotta laugh at anything printed in The Australian.

Player One believes anything negative against Labor, no matter how dubious the source. I suspect it helps justify preferencing the LNP first. Certainly see very few attacks on LNP politicians from that source. So in many ways Player One and The Australian have much in common.

It always amazes me that nonsense like this gets posted. As I have pointed out many times, the reality is that I am critical of both sides of the duopoly. But on PB, criticism of the LNP is so expected, so common and so normalized that no-one even notices it. But criticize the ALP, and hoo boy do the partisans get all sooky!

Justice Angus Stewart has found that Hanson’s tweet, where she said Mehreen Faruqi should “piss off back to Pakistan”, is unlawful.

Not too sure if J.Stewart is a lefty, if meant. He was appointed to the Federal Court in 2019.

  17. A small article has appeared in the Australian, regarding a poll conducted by YouGov relating to the U.S. election.
Wondering if anyone with access could have a sneaky peak and see if there are any Federal Voting intentions numbers tucked away down the bottom of it pls.

We’re sort of due for a YouGov Federal poll. Last one was six weeks ago and the split was 30-39-14.
Nothing on the YouGov website nor their facebook page.

  19. There is only one party where numbers are being counted and thats the diastrous federal labor government.
57-43 up now behind 49-51 now lets see how Newspoll etc in a couple of days go.

Stop hiding Albo we know you are unpopular so come out and lose some more votes.

  20. The last I recall reading about Marles’s COS was that he said in parliament that it was inappropriate for him to comment as she had threatened legal action.

Has that changed, I wonder? Is legal action still a happening thing? Or is she maybe agitating for a payout? In either case, it would still not be appropriate for Marles or the PM to say or do anything. Processes must follow their defined courses.

  21. That section of the Racial Discrimination Act that Hanson was found guilty of breaching, is extraordinarily wide:.

“ Offensive behaviour because of race, colour or national or ethnic origin
    (1) It is unlawful for a person to do an act, otherwise than in private, if:

    (a) the act is reasonably likely, in all the circumstances, to offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate another person or a group of people; and

    (b) the act is done because of the race, colour or national or ethnic origin of the other person or of some or all of the people in the group.”

So presumably, if Rex Douglas says that “Australians are racists” and I’m offended, he is acting unlawfully!! Luckily, there’s no right to free speech in Australia.

It’s broad and all four anti-discrimination acts use similarly board language but many people see racism in the American political context not the Australian legal context.

  23. Player One

I think truth would still be regarded as a valid defence.

But, are you saying that even saintly Green Senators are racists? or are you saying they are not Australians? You may be offensive in either case!

Well, FTR, I do think a majority of Australians are either passively racist or unabashedly racist.

If that’s based on how the act describes racism you wouldn’t have a legal problem.

    Integrity gaslighting.

This no longer has anything to do with Marles or Albanese. It is out of their hands, as it should be.

What Ms T and her lawyer are trying to use publicity to get an outcome they desire.

Trying to link a staff behaviour issue to the PM is shoddy stuff.

Naturally Integrity and The Greens Shit Sheet Guardian are up for it.

“Topography of the Pioneer Valley is wrong for Pumped Hydro.
It’s another Labor boondoggle, like the canned Traveston Dam.”
    ————————————————-

Really? On what basis do you say that?

By coincidence my brother is also an engineer who works for a major Qld power generator and we have discussed this scheme. The Pioneer / Burdekin Valey pumped hydro scheme (PHES) has by far the best potential for hydro power generation and storage in northern Qld. This is because of the large head (level) difference over a short distance, combined with large flow volume.
