YouGov: 50-50 (open thread)

Labor maintains level pegging in the latest YouGov poll despite a drop on the primary vote and a further weakening in Anthony Albanese’s personal ratings.

YouGov seems to be back in its three-weekly schedule of federal polling, the latest result showing no change on a tied two-party vote despite movement in the Coalition’s favour on the primary: specifically, Labor is down two points to 30% and the Coalition is up two to 39%. The two-party stasis is presumably down to rounding plus the effect on preferences of a one-point increase for the Greens to 14% and a one-point drop for One Nation to 7%. Anthony Albanese’s personal ratings have taken a dive, his approval down five to 36% and disapproval up six to 58%, while Peter Dutton is up two to 40% and down three to 50%. Albanese still has his nose in front as preferred prime minister, in from 43-38 to 42-39. The poll was conducted Friday to Thursday from a sample of 1619.

  1. Irene’s love for Rudd reminds me of bemused.

Rudd’s personal bitterness as a failed PM, along with Labor’s internal fossil fuel cartel operatives, tore down what could have been a lasting and positively transformational minority Govt.

Labor now are so gun-shy and conservative re their leaders that they prefer to lose elections rather than replace an ineffective leader.

    Labor wage rises ?
    Poverty ?

  3. No point changing leaders if you still end up serving the same shit sandwich. Albo presented himself as leader of a strong team if not particularly brilliant himself. His team are not making up for his own shortcomings.

Another 6 months and he’ll be the most successful Labor P.M. since Keating.
Measured by length of time spent hanging on to office.]
And certainly the most productive since before “the battler’s friend” who introduced the draconian workplace laws.

    @Rex Douglas

Labor were going to lose 25 seats if they stuck with Julia Gillard from it review. But I’ve been told the review shielded Gillard and it was going to be even worse. I know someone connected to the party that Tony Burke would have lost his ultra safe seat of Watson if they had stuck with Gillard.

And the Gillard challenge which was so disconnected from the public and so disconnected from the rank and file. And had a smorgasbord of number crunchers and backroom dealers involved (David Feeney, Mark Arbib, Don Farrell etc). That it gave the Labor party a black eye and handed the Prime Minstership to Tony Abbott. Your view that this kind of behavior is a good thing, and should be replicated. Really does show very little care for the Labor party, its members, or the country’s interests. And your more interested in just causing mischievous.

No point at all going to Dutton. He will feed the billionaires and starve the poor.
No point at all going to Bandt. He will have the country in recession before you can blink.

As for Prime Minister Albanese. Great job!

    In less than three years:

The post Covid economy stabilized. Tick.
    A million new jobs. Tick.
    Unemployment down to 4.2%. Tick.
Participation rate at the highest level ever. Tick.
Women’s participation in national life enhanced dramatically. Tick.
Vast improvements to paid parental leave. Tick.
    Real wage decline reversed. Tick.
    The NDIS reformed. Tick.
$4.7 billion national domestic violence package. Tick.
    National Budget repair. Tick.
The biggest Aged Care Package reform this century. Pending. Currently being held up by Bandt and Dutton.
More funding for social housing than any federal government his century. Tick. More to come if Bastard Bandt can get out of the way.
Repaired the fractured $20 billion trade relationship with China. Tick.
Rescued the Pacific from the damage done by the Coalition. Tick.
    Inflation trending down. Tick.
    Industrial relations reform. Tick.
Systemic improvements to access to cheaper medicines. Tick.
    AAT reform. Tick.
    43/30 Tick.
    300,000 free TAFE places. Tick.
Huge increase in wages of lowest paid workers in feminized industries. Tick.
Eliminated corruption from the Federal government after ten years of crooks and liars corrupting the joint. Tick.

    Meanwhile:

Full list of Bandt’s lifetime substantial national achievements. Working with Dutton to deliver substantial delays or complete blocks to desperately needed national reforms. Increased communal hatreds.

Full list of the Greens 35 years of substantial national achievements: two fifths of fuck all.

LOL. Ten years of Abbott, Turnbull and Morrison running down the NDIS was a national scandal all of its own. It was sinking.

Albanese has reformed that to the benefit of hundreds of thousands of people with a disability.

Disability employment at 93% would be close to the best in the world. But, hey, why not look at the glass 7% empty when you are out to do a bit of slagging.

Morrison and Albanese even close? Bullshit.

Reality is, if you take out the Qld results, Albo in ’22 did as good as Rudd did in 2007 nationwide.
So flicking Albo is just doubling down on the stupidity of flicking Rudd.
As JWH hisself opined, Rudd woulda won easily in 2010, if given the chance.
Would they still be polling 30% today if they’d stuck with Rudd throughout?

The NDIS has nothing to do with disability employment?

Another bit of 100% bullshit grumpiness.
    —————————-
NDIS is not a disability only employer and the disabled population is much bigger than the NDIS headcount.

  19. I have never had any doubt that if Rudd had not been rolled in 2010, the ALP would have gone onto win the 2010 election with a majority – quite likely high single digits – 7 or 9 – and workable. If there had been a move against Rudd in 2011 there would not have been the political damage. What is conveniently overlooked is that throughout the 2010 leadership and election saga Julia Gillard showed really poor political judgment and her government and her political career were doomed.

  20. The conception and subsequent problems of the NDIS are down to two things and both come down to everything being rushed. Firstly, it was conceived by a government on the nose so that it had to be conceived, legislated and running in one term if it was going to happen. Secondly, a four year parliamentary term would have given more time to get it right or at least better. The same could be said for the Carbon Tax – a year longer and it would have been harder to dismantle.

  21. I see the Rudd Gillard wars are being refought here again. Second only to the Labor – Green wars on the list of useless political struggles.

The Voice defeat dented Albo’s confidence in the Australian electorate but he remains head and shoulders ahead of Dutton, Bandt or Littleproud.

Labor did a great job in its first year stabilising both Australia’s budget and foreign policy after Morrison. There are many opportunities for Labor to improve its PV including further action on housing, anti-corruption, climate change (EVs?) and PS reform. There might be an opportunity to fix AUKUS after November.

Even if none of those things happen, worst case, Labor might end up in minority government after May 2025. I still can’t see Dutton becoming PM then. What is his policy program? Does he know?

  22. Another HUGE failure by the Government:
Jim Chalmers has conceded Australia’s net-overseas migration intake will be higher than forecast, opening Labor to Coalition criticism over its management of the post-pandemic surge in migrant arrivals.
Speaking on Sunday, the Treasurer said net overseas migration (NOM) – which measures the difference between the number of international arrivals staying longer than 12 months, and the number of long-term and permanent departures – would likely outstrip forecasts because departures had been lower than expected. “When it comes to arrivals, we’re more or less tracking as we expected, but when it comes to departures that’s been the big difference,” Dr Chalmers told Sky News. “That’s why there is likely to be a revision of those net overseas migration forecasts because of those fewer departures.”

  23. Departures from Australia lower than forecast?

It goes to show that despite all the bloviating that goes on here, Australia is still one of the least worst countries to be living and working in.

  24. Sure the net NOM figures not being what was expected is “another HUGE failure”. What is Chalmers to do, send in the ADF armed with batons to march people down to the international airport including those who arrived under Dutton’s watch and before the pandemic ? How about we chuck out anyone who arrived in the 9 years of ATM governments first …selective memory is a contagious disease apparently.

  25. We have covid quarantine stations empty so get the army to round them up and get out the queue jumpers whos visas have expired.
    They are not welcome.

  27. “ Another HUGE failure by the Government:

    ————————————————————-
Predicting the departure rate of migrants (returning home) and Australian-born is actually quite difficult. It involves understanding the world economy and Australia’s relative attractiveness as a destination ahead of time. Forecasters often get it wrong.

IMO government time would be better spent looking at causal factors in the house building slowdown and fixing them. That includes state and federal regulations on building approvals, materials and training/skill accreditation. Just hire PWC to do it – they can fix anything 🙁

Getting to the bottom of why costs like insurance have skyrocketed would also help.

  28. Have been busy this weekend with family and other things, our youngests 18th the chief of them

Didn’t catch insiders this morning, was it worth a watch? Health policy seems.to have stalled of late , would be curious how much time Speers spent discussing health vs whatever the gotcha of the day is……

  29. Not much you missed Page Boi on insiders today. Most of it was about the battle lines of parties on the housing crisis issue for the election with the Greens championing renters and demanding Labor break its election promise to stop Negative Gearing or Capital gains tax in return for passing Labors reforms and Dutton solution to allow access to Super to get a house deposit which is only good for people who have banked a good chunk of Super…not too many under 30s or 40s have that much super. A bit on health but Butler walked around the gotchas Speers tried out.

  30. How about we chuck out anyone who arrived in the 9 years of ATM governments first …selective memory is a contagious disease apparently.
How dumb are those Visa rorters who stayed under 9 years of Coalition Governments, eh?
Didn’t they know how bad Australia was back then?

  31. … and Dutton solution to allow access to Super to get a house deposit which is only good for people who have banked a good chunk of Super…
Yeah, voters aged between, oh, about 35 to 49.
    Labor, sleepwalking into Opposition.

  32. Having criticised AUKUS, Australia taking more of a role in regional alliances like the QUAD makes far more sense. So well done Albo for attending this event.
    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-09-22/quad-alliance-to-stay-beyond-november-us-election/104381376

The outcome is significant and sensible:
“ The leaders agreed to step up maritime cooperation, including plans to conduct joint coast guard operations in the Pacific for the first time next year.”

    And even better:
“ Co-operation on health was also elevated, with the establishment of the Quad Cancer Moonshot Initiative.

Under the initiative, Australia will expand its immunisation program for human papillomavirus (HPV) to prevent cervical cancer in more countries.

The supply of the vaccine will be extended from Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu to include Malaysia, Timor-Leste, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Fiji and Nauru.”

We will get more regional allies if we act like a better regional neighbour
