The fortnightly Essential Research poll is notable in recording a four-point dip in Labor’s already soft primary vote 28%, although the dividend goes mostly to the Greens, up three to 14%, rather than the Coalition steady on 34%, with One Nation steady on 7% and a steady 6% undecided. The pollster’s 2PP+ measure is back to having Labor and the Coalition tied at 47% apiece, with the balance undecided, with Labor steady and the Coalition up a point. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1132.
Some insight into the government’s precarious position is provided by a suite of questions on prospects for the coming year, finding 67% expect the cost of living situation to worsen with only 11% expecting it to improve, with broadly negative sentiment also recorded in relation to employment and wages. Questions on Indigenous issues find a 58-42 split in favour of the proposition that Indigenous disadvantage is a result of “the personal decisions they make” against the alternative of “systemic” explanations, and a 59-41 split against establishing a Makaratta commission to negotiate a treaty.
The weekly Roy Morgan poll has a 50-50 tie on respondent-allocated two-party preferred, erasing Labor’s 51.5-48.5 lead last time, from primary votes of Labor 29.5% (down one), Coalition 38% (up one), Greens 14% (up two) and One Nation 5% (down half). The pollster’s alternative two-party measure based on preference flows at the 2022 election has Labor ahead 51-49, in from 51.5-48.5 last week.
@Lordbain – well, by 1937 the Long March had taken place but the KMT was still the government of most of China and Mao’s surviving forces were a fragment of what they had been. You probably would have got very long odds on China becoming a communist country at that point, especially since the short odds bet was the Japanese conquering the place, and if anything the best chance the communists had was the KMT forces continuing to be massacred by the Japanese (and of course the Japanese invasion was indeed pivotal in the Communists overcoming the KMT). In the long run, iron to Japan was great for the communists.
Everything I’ve seen about Dalfram over the years is that communism sympathies were a minor factor if at all – revulsion towards Japanese military atrocities was widespread at the time.

There was an issue about Fiona Brown testifying in the Lehrmann defamation trial due to her health
Her evidence was not live streamed but recorded and released later.
Presumably her issues are ongoing.
================================================
I was not arguing that she didn’t have past issues either. I was arguing this case would put further strain on what issues she may have already.
Certainly if Reynolds doesn’t like what she says. This could be an issue for her too. As we know how doggedly Reynolds likes to pursue any former staffer of hers that says things she doesn’t agree with.
Fair points Arky; I would note the communist influences (Edward Roach etc), but at the end of the day, any good person, regardless of political affiliation, would have had more then enough evidence of Imperial Japans taste for conquest and atrocities.
Again, nothing fitting with BTs timeline

Theirs your mistake, you are assuming BT has a concept of linear time. His previous posting history would show he does not. In BT’s world causation ripples in all directions and is not linearly constrained to going forward in time.
If Dutton and the federal lib/nats , are feeling pressure , they seem to go after the women , whether its Labor ,greens or independents
Grubby behaviour by The Thug – channeling the Liberals ‘woman problem’
Plibersek says Zali Steggall subjected to ‘unparliamentary behaviour’ from Liberals and Nationals
The environment minister, Tanya Plibersek, has told Sky News why she and other Labor colleagues went and sat with Zali Steggall during the Palestinian visa motion Peter Dutton was attempting to move:
It was because she was just being shouted at so much by the Liberals and Nationals. We could barely hear her. There was just a wall of noise being directed at her and she was standing there alone speaking.
I mean, if you’re talking about unparliamentary behaviour, the wall of noise and interjection she was facing from the Liberals and Nationals was really extraordinary. And I don’t think anybody should face that sort of behaviour in a workplace.
Asked if the “wall of noise” was because of Steggall’s “stop being racist” comment, Plibersek said:
It was actually so loud and constant that it was pretty hard to pick out individual comments or even who was making them. It was really a wall of noise. But can we go, I think, to the substantive issue here? I think what Peter Dutton was doing in the parliament was once again seeking to win votes by frightening and dividing Australians.

It seems that Dutton doesn’t have the courage or strength to own his racist agenda re Gazans seeking safety in Australia.
Coward.
Tony Burke won’t handle Immigration any better than Andrew Giles, imo.
Badthinker, so Jim Healey was a commo, so what? John Howard’s father was a member of the fascist new guard, again so what? Things were very different 100 years ago.
Dutton has abandoned the dog whistle, and brought out the dog airhorn.
His handlers should review modern Australia’s ethnic heritage demographics, and tell him it’s a losing approach.
1937 wasn’t a century ago.
The bottom line here is labourers obeying their Communist Union Boss unthinkingly.

Labor’s chaotic split over gambling ads is the result of weak leadership from Albo.
This Govt is in big, big trouble.
Sad labor is sexist supporting the sexist CFMEU and taking 6 million from the sexist CFMEU.
It’s the tried and tested approach: divide, polarise and conquer.
It’s worked for Trump, Brexit, Meloni and Orban. Why not Dutton?
The median Australian is still someone who is none too well educated or travelled and who might not openly say these views in public but would tacitly support them at the ballot box. Dutton is speaking the language of the silent majority.
Federal Labor on the other hand has the consistently of rancid tofu.

Does that apply to the followers of fascism from that period too?
“In July 1939, Menzies, by then Prime Minister, declared in a speech that “history will label Hitler as one of the great men of the century”. In August 1938, while Attorney-General, Menzies spent several weeks on an official visit to Nazi Germany.”

Dutton is losing his shit in the weeds – nobody understands or cares what point he is trying to make with his airhorn – or is it a vuvuzela?

Pretty difficult to “go after” a Teal who isn’t a woman.
UNRWA, operating in Gaza with the full ability to accurately vet Gazans, were unaware the they had Hamas terrorists working for them and they participated in the 7 October rapes, murders and kidnapping.
How are Australian security agencies supposed to be able to do better than UNRWA in identifying terrorists?
“Who does Dutton think he is? Donald Trump? Nigel Farage?”
Dutton IS the Trump and Farage of the South Seas. And in today’s world it is a perfectly viable, even good, political strategy. Even in the most tolerant countries such as those in Scandinavia, anti-immigrant sentiment is a passport to political success. Just you wait.

Badthinker, you’re saying that communists ordered dockworkers in Australia to stop supplying a Japanese regime that was fighting against the anti-communist KMT regime in China, which advantaged the communists.
You do know that’s fucking crazy, right? Even for you that’s nonsensical.
ETA: Oh, Russia was worried? Stop supplying Japan while they were attacking the West’s best friend in Asia in the KMT just in case the Japanese went for Russia next and not, you know, America’s possessions in the Pacific? The Russians had German aggression first and foremost on their mind by then, not influencing some Australian dockworkers to delay some iron shipments to Japan.
This is a mad conspiracy theory with no historical evidence, unlike the actual truth.
@Rex: “Managed out”? If he hasn’t already resigned the Libs will manage him out a window or off a roof. What a stuff up.

I think you’ll find Brown’s evidence was not fully supportive of Reynolds. In fact some of Brown’s evidence contradicted Reynolds testimony in the criminal trial. Reynolds then changed her lies from there and admitted Brown was correct. For at least one event. Brown was only asked about recollection of events that directly related to accusations made on “The Project” Interview. If she gives testimony in this trial she’ll be asked far more wide ranging questions related to Reynolds overall handling and treatment of Higgins. Possibly related to statements made by both parties, up to the time of the social media posts, made after the election in 2022. Which are the actual subject of this defamation case and not the “The Project” interview. Who knows what new revelations this broader range of questioning might uncover?.
Another lamentable day for social democracy in Australia. This gambling issue is a disaster for Labor. To paraphrase the classic film Withnail and I, they are hanging on to a quickly rising balloon, but are unwilling to let go of the rope. Hopefully, like with the stage three tax cuts, Labor decide upon sensibility since the backbench ranks (and soon the grassroots) will be in open revolt, and they will have to pass a stricter law against advertising gambling during sports. Gambling is a cancer upon our society, and it should be the priority of social democrats to shrink it. It is a reverse Robin Hood: it steals mostly from the poor and desperate and feeds the very rich. The problem is that gambling companies wield undue influence in this country through political donations. My hope is that Labor can regain some primary votes but this current situation gives the Greens and “values-based community independents” a stick to whack us with even harder.
MPI on National Security, Patrick Gorman filibustering about everything but that.
The Government returned from the break full of piss and wind, after 3 days they’re running scared.

Only because Pig Iron Bob was fan of Hitler at that time. While fortunately Pig Iron Bob, a couple of years later, saw the error of his ways in doing that. I’m not so sure about BT?
Labor had an excellent QT today. Dutton was mired in his racist muck. Dutton@Trump.
Labor took the opportunity to remind viewers of the comprehensives suite of initiatives it had delivered to help with cost of living… including many, many that Dutton and Taylor either voted against or will drop if they gain the power so to do.
Labor will never do anything about Gambling ads.
The reason?
An ever shrinking percentage of Australians get their [very poor] information from FTA TV.
My opinion, that shrinking percentage parallels Labor’s shrinking Federal PV.
Labor had a bit of sport with a Party that couldn’t even enrol its candidates. If they can’t do that how can they pretend to be able to run a country?
