• The Guardian relates that the proposed redistribution for Western Australia will be published on Friday, with those for New South Wales and Victoria “expected in the first two weeks of June, or perhaps slightly earlier”.
• Mark Wales, the preselected Liberal candidate for the crucial Perth seat of Tangney, has stood aside due to a health issue within his family. The West Australian reports the party’s state council passed a motion that the second-placed candidate in last month’s preselection vote will get the nod if no new candidates nominate by the May 29 deadline, that being Howard Ong, an IT consultant and former Australian Christian Lobby activist.
• The Australian’s Feeding the Chooks column reports that state Ipswich MP Jennifer Howard has withdrawn her preselection challenge against Shayne Neumann in the federal seat of Blair. Anthony Albanese threw his weight behind Neumann amid concern over the security of Labor’s hold on a seat Neumann has held since 2007, and which he retained by a 5.2% margin in 2022.
• Feeding the Chooks further reports that Katie Havelberg, policy adviser at Queensland Health and president of Professionals Australia, will join Renée Coffey, chief executive of a foundation that helps children whose parents have a mental illness, in contesting Labor preselection in Griffith, the inner Brisbane seat that Max Chandler-Mather won for the Greens in 2022. Potential nominees in the seat of Brisbane, which Stephen Bates gained for the Greens from the LNP in 2022, include Tracey Price, the party’s unsuccessful candidate for the lord mayoralty in election in March, and candidate from 2022, Deloitte Australia director Madonna Jarrett.

The Rafah attack may not be genocide but it’s an atrocity. Unlike the Russians in Ukraine, I don’t believe that the Israelis are setting out to kill and wound civilians. She picked some days when there was little to no generation and said “ah hah! the whole thing’s a sham”. No one, but no one, is suggesting that there will always be wind generation at any particular point in time.
I’m kind of surprised JoNova doesn’t pick some time in the middle of the night and say “ah hah! look at 100% of solar panels being useless!”
Anyway, increasing the diversity – in type and geographic spread – with interconnectors will help a lot, storage will help, some backup generation – certainly the current plans don’t say “only wind” or “only wind and solar” – and the current electricity system is not 100% reliable anyway.
Blackouts happened with near 100% fossil fuel generation; they will happen with near 100% renewable generation – so what?
This notion that you can look at one generation type and draw some conclusion about the overall plan to switch to mostly renewable generation is just wrong-headed, whatever cherry-picked ‘facts’ are brought to the table.
Radical extremists continue to campaign for continued energy supply from fossil fuels.
Genuine conservatives see the low cost efficiency and environmental conservation and safety of energy from renewables.

The 48% and 52% numbers referenced by Judith appear to have been used for the ‘low assumption’ in the LCOE calculations, with the ‘high assumption’ numbers being 29% and 40% respectively.
Judith expects 25% to 33%, but a wind farm modelled to have a 25% capacity factor is very unlikely to even get built, so I don’t know where she’s getting her numbers from – good performing sites get well above 40% in Australia, so 48% represents a reasonable upper end of the range, and offshore can be expected to be better still.
Judith’s article reads like she’s saying GenCost has assumed every wind farm operates at 48%

I’m not crazy about the carelessness that Israel troops sometimes demonstrate in heir attacks (eg at Rafah yesterday, and also in relation to the aid convoy in which the Australian woman was killed). And I’m even less crazy about Netanyahu and some members of his Cabinet.
But, at the end of the day, Hamas started this war on October 7 2023 in an effort to prompt exactly the response they are getting. Whatever indifference the Israelis display towards the women and children of Gaza is only a fraction of the utter indifference shown by the Hamas leadership. Those wicked men do not give a flying f__k about casualties. Indeed, they want as many martyrs as possible, both to inspire future generations of fighters and also to shame Israel in the eyes of the rest of the world.
If Israel had a decent leader, as opposed to a man who is keen to escalate and prolong the conflict in order to delay – and perhaps even avoid – his day of reckoning, then it would be more careful about falling into the trap that the Hamas leaders have set for it.
As William B pointed out a few hours ago, the whole situation is extremely complicated and there are no clear good guys. But an interpretation of it as deriving from an Israeli effort to commit genocide is profoundly naive. As I posted earlier, those who believe this need to subject their thinking to rigorous self-criticism. Accusing Jews of genocide is surely a textbook instance of “blaming the victim.”
