There being nothing else on in the world of polling this week, the weekly Roy Morgan gets a rare guernsey. After a tied result last time, Labor recovers a two-party preferred lead of 51-49, despite equalling their worst primary vote result for the term, down one-and-a-half to 30%. The Coalition is also down half a point, to 37.5%, with Labor’s two-party result benefiting from a one-and-a-half point rise in the Greens to 15.5%, their equal best result for the term, and a one point drop for One Nation to 3.5%. The poll was conducted last Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1677.

But I tells ya, the whining I hear about ‘no room in the street because of too many cars because of medium density housing’ blah blah. What a load of BS. Medium density housing happens (at least in Adelaide) in areas with high levels of public transport. So 3 things. 1. Sell your extra cars and catch the bus. 2. Deal with busier streets – heaps of areas in inner Sydney where sardines can barely swim one way down a two way street. People make do. 3. Sell and people with less cars and no qualms in taking public transport or riding a bike will pay good money to buy into the place.

The “Malaysia” solution was a regional solution. I was against it like the Greens but that is what it is.
Advocating for the human rights of asylum seekers does not mean you want to see them die.
It does not man you want “open borders” as the right claims.
Just as Labor abiding by High Court rulings does not mean it’s gone soft on borders either. Respecting the rule of law is something I admire in governments not despise.
As we have seen recently Labor does not win by having “draconian” legislation as described in the media. Labor did well putting the human face on refugees during the election campaign with the Biloela Family. More of that please.

Support for the Coalition increased 1.5% to 50.5% to edge narrowly ahead of the ALP on 49.5% on a two-party preferred basis as Australians began to return from Easter holidays.
If a Federal Election were held now the result would be too close to call with a hung parliament and the support of minor parties and independents required for either the ALP or Coalition to form a minority government, the latest Roy Morgan survey shows.
Several issues hurt the Albanese Government’s support last week, in particular the surge in crime in Alice Springs which forced the imposition of a youth curfew in the outback town. There was also the arrival of a new asylum seeker boat in Western Australia and the death of an Australian aid worker in Gaza.
Primary support for the Coalition increased 0.5% to 38% ahead of the ALP on only 29.5%, down 0.5% from a week ago. In addition, hurting the ALP on a two-party preferred basis was the decrease in support for the Greens, down 2% to 13.5%.

As far as i can see the only place she could have been drugged is in the office. If she had a drink there. As she has no memory of doing so. It could not be proven. Though not remembering something from just before you are drugged is not unusual though. You probably have better idea of how quick acting and degree of memory loss from commonly used knock out drugs than me though. Possibly there could be longer acting ones she could have been given earlier?.Though i assume most of these drugs have been developed to get people who have trouble sleeping to get some sleep. So they tend to be taken just before going to bed and act quite quickly. Same applies even more so for those developed for general anesthesia during medical treatment.

Sure they exist. In small numbers. At uncompetitive prices.
But I’m sure that after Labor spends a billion dollars – while the Chinese spend 300 times that and also have massive volume, cost and productivity advantages- we will easily beat them on both price and volume.
Excuse me if I don’t hold my breath.
Following the Labor Greens policy debate on housing, I’m sure everyone agrees there is a problem and more needs to be done. Yet we also need to be honest about what is possible to be done. For a housing policy to be a viable solution it needs to be:
1. Funded (and economic) – can govt fund it without putting the budget into deficit and risking interest rate hikes?
2. Deliverable (labour) – are there enough skilled builders available to make the required number of homes. After years of neglecting Tafe, at present the answer is No.
3. Deliverable (materials & standards) – are sufficient quality building materials available? At present more work is needed on the regulatory side to weed out use of substandard materials and processes. We literally don’t have enough skilled building inspectors.
4. Deliverable (land) – we need a LOT more land, or major changes to urban zoning on density. Unless you are counting in square kilometres, your solution is too small.
5. Sustainable (amenity) Australia tends to be very profligate on urban land use, including how much we use for roads and parking. Fixing that needs new planning laws that protect amenity, greenspace etc if density is higher.
6. Sustainable (Infrastructure and services) – building lots of houses in places with no schools, roads, public transport and services is not a solution, just creating future slums.
7. Affordable (to buyers) – this is not just supply and demand. Many levels of government look at housing developments as a milking cow to fix their budget hole. We also need to stop land banking.
My main point here is to say that multiple problems evolved over a decade+ of neglect. They won’t be fixed in just a few years. To promise otherwise is not honest.
Having said that, if these problems can’t be fixed quickly, then immigration needs to reduce.

State and local governments have caused the shortage of housing.
Classic examples are in the Pilbara in NW WA. There’s no shortage of suitable land. Yet house prices skyrocket every mining boom because the local government with local land owners as councillors restrict supply of land for development. Then in conjunction with State Governments and utilities they drive the price up of what should be completely affordable entry level housing for first home buyers.
How could any Judge take such a submission seriously?

I’m not jumping into the cesspool of arguing about migration politics, but it is seriously disheartening to see somewhat reasonable Labor people on here having swallowed Liberal propaganda and lines from 15 years ago so thoroughly as to regurgitate it as their own in 2024.
I understand why Labor surrendered on refugee policy, because after what Howard did to migration politics Labor can’t win if refugee issues are even in the headlines, regardless of what they do, but it was the ugliest policy turnaround in a generation and its consequences horrific. Defending those actions, not just as a political necessity, but pretending there was a moral purpose in it all is genuinely sickening.

Crumbs. How many times can you miss the point? One might begin to suspect you do so deliberately.
It is not about China good or China bad. It is about Labor wasting a billion dollars on something that is simply unnecessary.
China already makes cheaper, better and – to put it simply – many, many times more – panels than Australia could ever hope to make, even if Labor was willing to spent the same hundreds of billions of dollars on doing so that the Chinese have already spent.
We will continue to import the vast bulk of our panels from China no matter what our government does.

It’s a fool of a policy. And I mean that literally – it is designed to appeal to low information fools. Of which there seem to be quite a few here on PB.
It’s high time for appellate judges to consider the effects of their decisions. Their professional underlings (and families) have been the subject of unprecedented abuse, threats of violence, and who knows what else. If a trial judge gets the law wrong, then they must step in and not only correct it but also explain how they reached their decision. A case on all four is the decision to reduce Trump’s bond from $464m to $175m – this in the absence of explaining where Engoran erred. Yes, they will eventually deliver a judgment but the damage has been done to the trial judge’s professionalism.
Chutkin, Kaplan, Engoran, and Merchan have been essentially and in different ways left out to dry, unsupported by senior judges. But these elite judges of appeal, right up to US Supreme Court, have in the main avoided the crap directed at them by the baying mob of Trump supporters. Let them be subject to it and see how they cope. When Biden’s reelected, his first act should be to increase the number of US Supreme Court justices to at least twelve.
I’ll applaud Max Chandler-Mather when he agrees to high rise development in his own electorate and those of other inner city Greens’ MPs, by way of a solution to the Housing Availability Crisis.

That Lehrmann team ‘master chronology’ which never saw the light until Taylor Auerbach, who mysteriously had a copy, has some interesting revelations. Like this:
The master chronology records on March 29, 2019, that Fiona Brown claimed that “Linda called – directed me to go to AFP and report the incident on her behalf, I refused. We discussed, she insisted, I refused. I said ‘you can’t, it is morally and ethically wrong. It is up to the person/victim, disempowering etc’. Heated.”
The document also records Assistant Commissioner Leanne Close’s notes of a meeting with Senator Reynolds on April 4
“I thanked her for her time. She said ‘what’s it about?’ I said there’s been an allegation of a sexual assault by a female member of her office against a male member. She said ‘I thought that’s what it would be about’,” the notes states.
“Can I bring in Fiona, my chief of staff who has specific details?” Minister Reynolds asked, according to the note referring to Fiona Brown, who is then said to have entered the minister’s office.
“Min Reynolds (said) ‘it’s about Brittany!’” the note continues. “We became aware on Tuesday that this had happened on Saturday night – on my couch there! (Minister pointed to the couch in her office).”
Senator Reynolds has denied knowing before the April 1 meeting of any rape allegation or that the incident allegedly occurred in her office.
