The monthly Resolve Strategic poll in the Age/Herald has the Coalition up four points on the primary vote to 34% without taking a bite out of Labor’s 35%, the balance coming from drops of one point for the Greens to 12%, two for One Nation to 5% and one for the United Australia Party to 1%. The pollster does not provide two-party preferred numbers but I get it to 54.6-45.4 to Labor – a seemingly solid result for Labor, but just shading the June poll as its weakest since the election, in line with the broader trend when Resolve’s skew to Labor relative to other pollsters is accounted for.
Anthony Albanese is down three on approval to 36% and up two on disapproval to 48%, while Peter Dutton is respectively down one to 34% and up two to 42%. Preferred prime minister is little changed at 42-28 in Albanese’s favour, compared with 40-27 last month. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1605, and will presumably be followed over the next few days by a bi-monthly read of Victorian voting intention combining results from this poll and last month’s.
Also out yesterday was the weekly Roy Morgan poll has Labor’s lead back to 51-49 after moving three points in their favour to 52.5-45 last week. The primary votes are Labor 32.5% (up half a point), Coalition 37.5% (up two-and-a-half), Greens 12.5% (down one) and One Nation 5% (steady). The poll was conducted last Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1730.

Yep, lets just wait for SMR’s as they are only 5 years off. The cry of the wilful procrastinator. SMR’s have been in temporal position of 5 years off for nearly 20 years now and will likely remain in that temporal position for another 50 years. As long as that claim can be rolled out to delay the uptake of renewables.
“Cost of living crisis and yet still buying cars in record numbers. Makes me laugh at some of the bullshit of this supposed cost of living crisis.”
There are plenty of cashed-up baby boomers who can now buy their dream vehicle having astutely invested property and judiciously manipulated the rules of negative gearing, and, if they are reasonably lucky, gained an inheritance.
There are also plenty of aspiring battlers who are unable to purchase a dwelling close to public transport and for whom a car is essential to getting to work. They mostly borrow money to buy a car rather than buying one outright.
At its meeting today, the Board decided to leave the cash rate target unchanged at 4.35 per cent and the interest rate paid on Exchange Settlement balances unchanged at 4.25 per cent.
Last month, the Board increased interest rates by 25 basis points, following a period of four months where it had held interest rates steady. This decision reflected the Board’s view that progress in bringing inflation back to the target range of 2 to 3 per cent was looking slower than earlier forecast. While the economy has been experiencing a period of below-trend growth, it was stronger than expected over the first half of the year. Underlying inflation was higher than expected at the time of the August forecasts, including across a broad range of services. Conditions in the labour market had eased but remained tight. Housing prices were continuing to rise across the country as was the number of new mortgages. Given this, the Board judged that the risk of inflation remaining higher for longer had risen and an increase in interest rates was therefore warranted to be more assured that inflation would return to target in a reasonable timeframe.
There are still significant uncertainties around the outlook. While there have been encouraging signs on goods inflation abroad, services price inflation has remained persistent and the same could occur in Australia. There also remains a high level of uncertainty around the outlook for the Chinese economy and the implications of the conflicts abroad. Domestically, there are uncertainties regarding the lags in the effect of monetary policy and how firms’ pricing decisions and wages will respond to the slower growth in the economy at a time when the labour market remains tight. The outlook for household consumption also remains uncertain, with many households experiencing a painful squeeze on their finances, while some are benefiting from rising housing prices, substantial savings buffers and higher interest income.
Whether further tightening of monetary policy is required to ensure that inflation returns to target in a reasonable timeframe will depend upon the data and the evolving assessment of risks. In making its decisions, the Board will continue to pay close attention to developments in the global economy, trends in domestic demand, and the outlook for inflation and the labour market. The Board remains resolute in its determination to return inflation to target and will do what is necessary to achieve that outcome.

I wasn’t much of an O’Neil fan back in her real early days when she just came across as a hack (Dandenong mayor era) but she hasn’t done a horrible job in the Home affairs portfolio. But this High court ruling is just a massive shit sandwich. I doubt the Liberals would have handled it any better.
Indefinite detention has been a bipartisan policy. Since 2004 it seems. Neither party would have wanted to change it. And didn’t pay much attention to it.
Claire O’Neill only was granted the portfolio after the Labor win in May 2022. Prior Senator Kristina Keneally was the Shadow Home Affairs Minister, and likely would have kept it if she had been given first place on the NSW Senate ticket. Or had won the Fowler electorate.
Seem to remember the Labor Senate boss Don Farrell refused to remove Senator Deb O’Neill from the no 1 Senate position, and multicultural Fowler was never a suitable electorate for Keneally.
I was disappointed how, I feel she was abandoned by Labor. Was a big supporter of hers, felt she had a lot to contribute to Labor.
Others must have felt differently. I guess the Senate order of right faction, left faction,…positioning was part of the problem.
Factions still powerful in Labor.
PN, lvt knows he tipped peak Albo in Oct 2021. He knows he was completely wrong as Albo’ s popularity lasted into an extended post-election honeymoon. Making shit up is his mo.

Could someone remind me how many Coalition Ministers resigned during the ATM years? How many times Stuart Robert should have resigned, but failed up instead?
On the Lehrman case, why would Channel Ten settle now? They still haven’t called all their witness list to testify yet, including all their experts.
Lehrmann’s lawyer cross-examining Higgins for days on end is the worst it will get for the defence.

Settlements are usually confidential. The ABC should never have settled with BL if as I understand it, they were sued merely for broadcasting the National Press Club address by Tame and Higgins.I was disappointed media watch did not discuss. Some of the settlement may be revealed on cost applications but certainly not necessarily.
Yes, Channel Ten have a host of other witnesses to come including the security guards from the Night of the incident, a medical expert as to how drunk Higgins was on that night (shitfaced is the technical term) and a lip reader of what Lehrmann said in various bits of CCTV.
I am not sure that this cross examination by Lehrmann’s barrister has produced a Perry Mason moment yet. But he is racking up the billable hours.

Trump seeks “urgent review” of gag order ruling in New York civil fraud case
https://www-cbsnews-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/trump-gag-order-new-york-fraud-case-appeal/?amp_gsa=1&_js_v=a9&usqp=mq331AQGsAEggAID#amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&aoh=17017481172097&csi=0&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&share=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cbsnews.com%2Fnews%2Ftrump-gag-order-new-york-fraud-case-appeal%2F
“Former President Donald Trump intends to appeal a ruling that upheld a gag order in his civil fraud trial in New York, with his attorneys saying Monday that they plan to ask the state’s highest court to review the decision.
New York Judge Arthur Engoron issued the order barring Trump from commenting publicly about his staff after the former president published a social media post disparaging Engoron’s clerk on Oct. 3, the second day of the trial. The order was later expanded to apply to attorneys in the case.
The judge found that Trump and his campaign violated the gag order twice, and Trump paid $15,000 in fines, before the appeals court temporarily stayed the order on Nov. 16. That hiatus lasted two weeks, while a panel of judges in the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court considered, and then rejected, Trump’s request to have the gag order lifted.
Trump is now seeking an “urgent review” by New York’s highest court, called the Court of Appeals, his attorneys said in a filing. Trump has accused Engoron and the clerk, Allison Greenfield, of bias in his filings.
“Without expedited review, [the defendants] will continue to suffer irreparable injury daily, as they are silenced on matters implicating the appearance of bias and impropriety on the bench during a trial of immense stakes,” Trump attorney Clifford Robert wrote. “Petitioners’ counsel have no means of preserving evidence of or arguments regarding such bias and impropriety at this time, since the Gag Orders also prohibit in-court statements.”

Most long cases have time dedicated to boring bits and bullshit evidence
I think the ABC was using the defence that they could not do any further damage to Lehrmann’s character – effectively Ten and others had already damaged him so much that the NPC broadcast did no further damage. The settlement might simply have been, no costs and no award.
It seems that Michael Lee is becoming annoyed at the length and direction of Whybrow.

I think they have some staffers too. Who will back Higgins recollection that Lehrmann tried to kiss her on an earlier occasion. Hence them trying today to get Higgins to back down on that statement, which Lehrmann denies happened. Also at least one staffer who was with them in the night club to testify Lehrmann was being very handsy with her there. Though whether all this evidence will be presented by these people in court or just by lawyers with signed statutory declaration for at least some of them, i’m unsure.
From the Guardian we see that we won’t get to hear the recording of the delightful Senator Cash unless a Mr D Try also agrees.
Keep an open for Mr Try PB followers, and let the court know if you know where he is.
I think the medical expert on the drunk state of Higgins is to lay to rest some the argument that Whybrow was making about how she didn’t look drunk when she was walking straight. They have CCTV of at least 12 standard drinks over 5 or 6 hours. She claimed to be about 60 kilos then, so lets say 65. She would be about 0.2 or there abouts.

This article from the CSIRO gives a good explanation on why nuclear energy makes no sense for Australia.
https://www.csiro.au/en/news/all/articles/2023/may/nuclear-explainer
I don’t think it matters what technology is used to generate electricity, provided it does so cheaply and reliably, and it doesn’t cook the planet or create other major problems in the process. But Nuclear fails because of its high cost relative to wind and solar and the very long lead time to build it. The report notes it’s hard to cost SMRs because the technology does not yet exist-based on their assumption that capital cost of SMRs is halved from present estimates, power from SMRs is still more than 50% more costly than from wind and solar. So until such time, if ever, that a better technology becomes viable, surely the only sane policy is to just switch from coal/gas to wind/solar as fast as we can, without turning the lights out in the process.

Seems double edged to me – I would prefer a case with Ms Higgins sober enough so as to give a credible account of events
The question that nuclear proponents need to answer about nuclear energy, especially with unproven technology like SMRs: why would we bother with it? We know you don’t care about greenhouse emissions so it’s not that. In any case we have far cheaper and proven technology available to us. What, it kills whales and birds? Well, it doesn’t. In any case you don’t care about whales and birds either, so it’s not that.

That was my thought – wouldn’t a line of defence for Lehrman be that Higgins was so drunk her evidence is untrustworthy?
Does alcohol impairment create false memories?
Seems double edged to me – I would prefer a case with Ms Higgins sober enough so as to give a credible account of events
——————————————————————————
If Ms Higgins was sober enough to make credible decisions. She would of continued on home in the ride share car when Lehrmann was dropped off at Parliament to “collect his keys”. I suspect they are trying to show Ms Higgins was very drunk and not making many decisions herself at all. Instead relying on Lehrmann to make sure she got home in the end. Who latter for some unknown reason left her in a office and left without checking on her or organising a lift for her. Whether with him or separately. Even though he would have been pretty aware of the actual state of intoxication she was in. Lehrmanns account here doesn’t seem to pass the pub test. While her behaviour, just following him where he said to go. Was in keeping with someone being very drunk and relying on others to get her home.

Nuclear is just not wanted in Australia by enough voters to justify its widespread use.
The fact that a discussion concerning the widespread use of nuclear energy (so very similar to the 1970’s discussion) is happening is a reflection of the desperation of the Liberal and National parties to be the apex predator in all things political in Australian.
Dutton should declare that the Liberals and Nationals will hold a referendum on the matter if elected at the next election.
Nuclear energy is just too expensive in comparison to other energy sources.
Thankfully PB is devoid of many supporters of the proliferation of nuclear energy.
The supporters should not be “called out” as nutters.
Dutton should also declare that if by chance the Liberals and Nationals were elected with himself as PM, that he Dutton, would not announce a mandate for nuclear power on winning an election and promise to conduct a referendum concerning its widespread use.
Where’s the frank and fearless press in these matters?

They will have the testimony of Lauren Gain and possibly Austin Wenke latter. These two were with Lehrmann and Higgins at the night club. Her state of intoxication may have relevance to the testimony we hear on who was making the decisions on ride share allocation. Also what their understanding of where the ride share car with Lehrmann and Higgins was going. I assume these staffers will be asked were they surprised by the fact the car took them to Parliament. Whether knowing her state of intoxication. Did they think she would have been contributing in that decision to go to parliament?.I think they may be asked about Lehrmann leaving her in the office. Particularly if it was their understanding they were sharing a ride home. With Lehrmann being the more sober of two making sure she got home safely. Which as we know did not occur.
I note that Taylor, the Shadow treasurer, refers to those with “hefty mortgages”
Could someone put the 10 Year RBA data before him, showing that in January 1990 we owed $118 Billion to our home loan lenders, $355 Billion in January 2000 AND $1.226 TRILLION IN JANUARY 2010 (notwithstanding the GFC from 2008, and lending stalling).
That was a 350% increase from 2000 until 2008 and the GFC (noting that people apply for a loan to purchase a home – or anything they borrow for), the “Fool’s Gold” period for the Australian economy on the back of the Mining Boom Phase 1 and the abject mismanagement of that period (hence inflation and the AUD 10 Year Bond Yield with a 7 in front of it in 2007 – now a 4).
And ask him to speak to that data.
Then put the 30 Year Graph of the AUD 10 Year Bond Yield movements before him, asking him also to speak to that data.
9 Entertainment typically give Taylor the headline as a negative to the Cash Rate being held steady, but do not present the facts then asking the obvious questions.
Taylor is correct re “hefty mortgages” – dating from Howard/Costello and 2000 until 2008.
The data speaks.
