Miscellany: by-elections latest (open thread)

Major party starters in place for Fadden, a date set for Rockingham, and nine candidates emerge for Liberal preselection in Warrandyte.

News to report on the three by-elections presently in view – one federal and two state, two with dates confirmed and one to be announced:

• The Liberal National Party candidate for the Fadden by-election on July 15 will be long-serving Gold Coast councillor Cameron Caldwell, who won a final round vote of 153 preselectors over Dinesh Palipana, with Fran Ward, Owen Caterer and Craig Hobart falling by the wayside in earlier rounds. Lydia Lynch of The Australian reports a meeting of Labor’s administrative committee last Friday unanimously endorsed Letitia Del Fabbro, a nurse educator who was also the candidate at the May 2022 election.

• Nine candidates have nominated for Liberal preselection in Warrandyte, expected to be held in about a fortnight, controversial former Kew MP Tim Smith not being among them. As reported by Rachel Baxendale in The Australian, they are John Roskam, former executive director of the Institute of Public Affairs; Sarah Overton, KPMG director; Nicole Ta-Ei Werner, who ran in Box Hill at the November state election; Jason McClintock, a tech business founder who ran in Eltham (and who donated heavily to the party’s state election campaign); David Farrelly, who ran in Pakenham; Jemma Townson, “energy industry communications director and former Matthew Guy and Katie Allen staffer”; Antonietta di Cosmo, 22-year-old “Ryan Smith staffer, champion rower and law student”; Allison Troth, “cancer campaigner and former John Howard staffer”; and Andrew Conlon, “Manningham councillor and maths teacher”. The report says factional conservatives are likely to back Roskam or Werner, while “an opposing factional grouping that coalesces around powerbrokers Frank Greenstein and Holly Byrne” might support Overton, McClintock or Townson.

• The Rockingham by-election to replace Mark McGowan has been set for July 29. The West Australian reports that Labor’s candidate will likely be Magenta Marshall, who has won backing from the Right, despite last week saying she was “not sure it’s my time”. Marshall is in her late twenties and works in a “specialised campaigning role” in party headquarters, having previously been an electorate officer to Balcatta MP David Michael.

  1. Obviously the yes campaign needs to ramp up.
Its time to point out to the electorate that a no vote is unacceptable and anyone who considers it is a racist – that will quickly get people back onside

  2. send out Shogun and Pi out into the shopping centres to confront the racists – that’ll do the trick.

  3. It’s a bit hard to call some of those pushing the NO vote racist when they are FN people. Unfortunately, they are using the fear and hatred buttons which as we know do work. But straight-out lies do not help.

  4. I remember a user laughing at me on this website when I suggested a few months ago that a ‘yes’ vote was not a shoe-in… a little open-mindedness and less arrogance goes a long way 😉

    Old Spoke
I checked the correct site and looked at the FOIs published and one would have to look very hard and interpret those publications to put all those points in the Fake note and hand them out as fact.

Indeed! Sadly, facts and context are easily manipulated …

  6. LVT: “send out Shogun and Pi out into the shopping centres to confront the racists – that’ll do the trick.”

The problem with racists isn’t that they don’t like being racist. They just don’t like being called racists. You wanna stand up to be counted with the racists, don’t get offended when you’re called what you are.

Mozzie: “It’s a bit hard to call some of those pushing the NO vote racist”

No it isn’t. It really is very simple; You want to stand up and be counted with the racists, don’t get offended when people call you what you are. “buh buh I’m not the same as all of those other racists that I’m standing with” ain’t gonna matter. These are the same people, mind you, that tar all muslims as being ‘terrorists’, so I’m not going to worry too much about how their fee fees get hurt.

  7. Rule #1 of Russian propaganda: Target your infiltration via seemingly reliable sources. Then watch it spread effortlessly.

  8. From the SMH Voice poll..

The state figures are based on questions to 3216 voters including 1008 in NSW and 1006 in Victoria, along with smaller groups in smaller states. The margin of error is greater in the state results, highlighting the uncertainty about the outcome when Yes campaigners express confidence in winning the referendum.

  9. Too much Viagra? Too much plastic surgery? Too much Botox?

Anyhoo, they won’t have to bother embalming the body.

  10. The Voice support is dropping amongst ALP supporters. Maybe all of you can start interrogating fellow branch members – to find the racists?

  11. The only thing that the voice failing will do is permanently tar the liberals and nationals as the party of racists. It’s the stink that doesn’t wash off. They’ll never live it down, and their voter base will continue to dwindle as the old cohort that is their base continues to die off.

  12. I took part in that Resolve poll last week. Look out for some reporting on why people support the Albanese government. They had a write-in question.

  13. Nationals – 95% racist.
    Liberals – 90% racist.
    Greens (party) – 50% racist.
    Labor – 10% racist.
    Greens (voters) – 5% racist.

You don’t get to blame other people for your racist problem LVT. You own it.

  14. Its still winnable sprocket – but Albo will need to act.

Drop the reference to executive govt – pack off Linda Burney to a diplomatic posting – put in a good communicator like Murray Watt – still winnable.

Labor hardheads may decide to run dead though given the polls.

  15. Don’t take the advice of racists when trying to deal with the problem of racism. All it does it empower them to be more racist. The LNP decided to take the racist route blocking the voice long before the voice question was even formed. They don’t care about ‘the executive’. There is no condition that will be suitable as evidenced by them blocking the voice even before knowing what it was. They’re racists. They see hate signalling to racists as a way to coordinate their base. They know they’re appealing to the racists like LVT. It’s all they know.

  16. SILVIO BERLUSCONI
    – Media tycoon with assets in television and print
    – Net worth of $7 billion in April, 2023
    – Served as PM of Italy in four governments from 1994 to 1995, 2001 to 2006 and 2008 to 2011.
    – Owned A.C. Milan from 1986 to 2017
    – Has died at age of 86

  17. Actually I agree with Lars that Linda Burney is a liability in that portfolio and Murray Watt would be a far more effective indigenous affairs minister .
My mother is a long time Labor voter and she will probably vote No, for the record my Mum is hardly a racist at all, far from it.
The “executive government” element needs to be removed from the referendum question.

  18. sprocket: from the smh;”Leading Voice architect Noel Pearson is pushing for a fundamental shift in how the Voice to parliament referendum is being presented, warning the Yes movement lacks a clear message and has been snookered by deceptive arguments of its opponents.”

That’s all true, but that’s the thing about fighting something that depends upon people targeting the racist attitudes of others. That’s Dutton and Littleproud. They know it. It’s true that the voice campaigners have to work harder at spreading the message, but that will be a many-pronged exercise. The fact is, appealing to racists is effective because racist people are generally low-information types. They want to believe the racist tropes, so if you feed them that, they eat it up.

Evan: “The “executive government” element needs to be removed from the referendum question.”

The only thing that will do is empower the racists to be more racist. Because they’ll have evidence that it works. They don’t care about the executive government clause. It will not change a single vote removing it. All it does is provide cover to racists who were going to vote no anyway.

  19. The SmearStralian may have the drop?

    Torpedo approaching warship project

The Hunter-class frigate was supposed to arm Australia with ‘one of the most advanced anti-submarine warships in the world’ but it is in danger of never roaming its shores as the Prime Minister weighs up spending on a vessel that may be a ‘lemon’.

Last night we held our first Voice to Parliament Town Hall at the Paddo RSL ❤️
There was an incredible turnout from community members who came along to get informed about the Voice.

Thanks to our amazing panellists for answering our community’s questions. We had Professor Tom Calma from the referendum working group, constitutional expert Dr Shireen Morris, and Ruby Langton-Batty, a young lawyer and a proud descendant of the Bidjara and Iman people of Queensland.

Big thanks also Gene Raymond Ross for his moving acknowledgment and to our volunteers for all the hard work – Margot, Rod, Jonathan, Ramazin and Sigrid and many more!

In the words of Tom Calma last night: “If you’re happy with the status quo, vote no. If you want to see change, vote Yes.”

    https://www.facebook.com/allegraforwentworth/posts/pfbid02wnR4GzJjRbPaRZFJEbfTR6dn4yEyZ2Enok4g1rhSDHWvYQKtzN24tu5c8J5rno5cl

The problem with Tom Calma’s pitch is that the status quo doesn’t really affect anyone except Indigenous people. And from the polling there’s an increasing number of people who are indeed happy with the status quo.

  21. “The former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has died aged 86, according to the country’s leading news agency, Ansa”

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jun/12/silvio-berlusconi-former-italian-prime-minister-dies

    Can’t say I’m unhappy. Why?

“KYIV, Feb 13 (Reuters) – Ukraine accused former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Monday of spreading Russian propaganda after he said he would not seek a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy if he were still head of government.

Berlusconi, 86, often boasted of his friendship with Russian President Vladimir Putin before Russia invaded Ukraine last year.”

    https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukraine-says-italys-berlusconi-spreading-russian-propaganda-2023-02-13/

Good riddance to that bloated Putin-loving old fart. Now, there should be less agitation within Italy to go down the Putin rabbit-hole to moral and sovereign oblivion.

  22. Not sure Noel’s approach is correct sprocket.

The paradox is – the voice is just consultation , yet it’s fundamental to rights / justice etc. Peeps think what’s the catch?

It also requires the PM to inspire and lead.
Maybe Albo has it in him after all – we will see.

[‘Harvard law professor Laurence Tribe @tribelaw calls for the federal trial against Donald Trump to be televised.’]

I think that Tribe’s right and there is authority to do so: Chandler v. Florida, 449 U.S. 560 (1981). And I’m sure DeSantis wouldn’t complain, his latest less-than-subtle salvo aimed at Trump is that whereas he can serve two terms, he (Trump) is limited to one – quite astute for a guy who has a penchant for bannings books & is thick as a brick but dangerous. That said, Trump’s base is supa-glued to him; thus I’m unsure of the utility of providing him more exposure.

  24. LVT: “what’s the catch?”

Racists use whatever excuse they can to be racist. It’s always someone elses fault. If they find that no-one believes their excuses for being racist, they just invent new excuses. It’s part of the pathology.

  25. I think that the Voice vote is doomed, unless something pretty radical occurs, you know like a visible Yes campaign. Also, Burney has to go. She is useless. Is there a worse communicator in the Labor party?

  26. I’ll be voting yes Pi . Think it’s fair enough – you still have to make a case to a majority though.

It’s great that it’s winning in my electorate – Wentworth , but so did the republic.

You have to win in seats like greenway and the like.

  27. Berlusconi’s death might have an impact on the right wing coalition Italian government. His party Forza Italia was really his baby and I am not sure it will cope without its leader (and his cash). If his party was to withdraw the government is likely to fall.

  28. LVT:”I’ll be voting yes Pi .”

If you want to stand up and be counted with the racists, no-one gives a shit what you say.

    LVT: “You have to win”

Funny how it’s “you” eh? It’s almost like you’re cheering for the racists.

  29. Australians are fair minded people Pi- but you do need to make the case.

The Hilary basket of deplorables approach will backfire – even Noel recognised that.

  30. LVT: “Australians are fair minded people Pi”

When you stop standing up to be counted with the racists, I’ll think you can be included in the ‘fair minded people’ cohort.

LVT: “It’s your fault I’m racist”

    We’ve already covered this.

  31. ABC 7.30 running the Russian line that the Nova Kakhova dam destruction could have been an act of Ukrainian sabotage. On ‘balance ‘ with the Ukrainian accusation that Russia blew it up. 🙄

  32. I think calling anyone who opposes the Voice or even supports it but has concerns about how the Yes campaign is going a bunch of racists is a real winning strategy.

Just like calling anyone who had concerns about Bill Shorten’s chances in 2019 “bedwetters”

I posted on here a couple of weeks ago my concern about the Yes campaign’s lack of communication and how the No case can have different angles depending on the voter they’re targeting.

To recap, aside from the blatant racist reactionary, No is going for:

    1. The white person who doesn’t consider themselves racist but gets irked by “wokeness” and being called racist.
    2. Those who are confused about what the proposal actually does and are concerned about potentially negative side-effects (real or not.)
    3. Similar to the above, the disengaged who don’t know much about this stuff but will still be expected to make a decision on the day (they’ll lean No if they can’t be convinced otherwise.)
    4. Indigenous people who are convinced this is just white people making more tokenistic decisions for them.
    5. Activists who don’t think it goes far enough (whether legitimate or they’re just being contrarian for some radical cred.)
    6. Well-meaning but foolish white people who don’t think they should be making this decision (i.e. only Indigenous people should vote for this) and should instead opt to abstain.

Yes needs to be a lot more pro-active and communicate better. They also need to sharpen the message to exactly what the proposal does and what the benefit will be. Schmaltzy campaigns about Indigenous rights are good but they can easily be pulled apart. And, definitely, avoid “You are racist if you oppose this” type of messaging because all you’re going to do is make voters defiant.
