One last federal voting intention poll for the year, it seems, contrary to the expectations expressed in my previous post. This one is a poll for the Financial Review from Freshwater Strategy, which has previous conducted New South Wales and Victorian state polls for the paper, the latter of which made a pretty good stab at the result three weeks out. This poll has Labor leading 54-46 on two-party preferred, with Labor at the Coalition at 37% apiece on the primary vote, the Greens on 12% and One Nation on 4%. Anthony Albanese records a favourable rating of 48% and unfavourable of 30%, while Peter Dutton is on 29% and 38%, with Albanese leading 55-29 on preferred prime minister.
The poll also finds support for an Indigenous voice at 50% with 26% opposed, with 63% saying they were aware of the proposed referendum compared with 37% for unaware. Forty per cent believed voters had sufficient information, with 50% saying they did not. Other findings related to the proposed cap on gas prices, which was supported by 56% and opposed by 20%. Sixty per cent expressed support for extracting and using more domestic gas with 22% opposed; given a head-to-head choice between a cap on prices and increasing the supply of energy, the result was an effective tie at 40% to 39%. An issue salience question produced the familiar finding that cost-of-living was far and away the greatest concern, with 71% choosing it when asked to offer three responses.
The poll was conducted online from Friday to Sunday with a sample of 1209.

…Others probably understand that criticism of Labor does not automatically mean you are a Liberal.”
You are correct, if anyone shows you a criticism of the ALP it could come from either a Liberal or a Greens (with about 50% chance each). In fact, being attacked by both the lunatic right and the deluded section of the left will ensure a very long life in government for the ALP….
Cronyism still alive and well…

Well, Albo and Co certainly getting announcements done. Rudd as ambassador is a bit of a risky move”…
On the other hand, let’s not forget that between Rudd 2007 and Rudd 2022 there are 15 years of maturity. That’s a long time spent developing and growing up.
All that talk about the Libs stacking the AAT…. nek minnit Rudd gets a plum job.
Albanese should have re-appointed either Sinodinos or Hockey.
Alternatively he could have managed Jordan Steele-John out of his current role into something more useful.
In comparison to that trio of has beens, coudabeens and wannabes, Rudd knows nothing about foreign affairs.
Good to see gun reform back on the agenda after the Wieambilla Massacre.
I see no reason not to make all gun users sign personally for every weapon and piece of ammunition (a la police & military use), and war-on-drugs level punitive action against any (and all) transgressions. Think of it as collective punishment for tolerating the arseholes’ special pleading for so long.

The bluffs of two of the most powerful industries in Australia have been called – one each by each side of politics. Federal Labor has taken on the fossils of the fossil fuel industry and the NSW Liberals have taken on the gaming industry. It is a significant power shift, writes Crispin Hull who says it’s now time to meet the military with political resistance.

If NSW Labor or any State Labor (poroti, I know Gaming industry is tamed in WA, so no gloating please 🙂 ), takes on Gaming industry all hell will break lose. Prime example was Tasmanian Labor in previous election.
Marriage equality law passed only because LNP government was responsible for that.
But Federal Labor taking on Fossil fuel industry is a courageous thing to do.
Whereas when it comes to Gaming industry LNP are natural fit for them, they are left in a lurch (and looking for Addams Family) when LNP opposes them. I know, I know, Bob Carr was responsible for the flourishing of Gaming industry in NSW by giving licence to each and every club.
But Developers were very chummy with NSW Labor too as long as they were in power. Now you cannot separate them with LNP. Power corrupts.
rhw
The NSW Coalition has (a) called for gun reform and (b) hand passed it to the Feds – a cunning stunt running into the NSW state elections – particularly since it has been a state in which the NSW Libs and Nats have traded softer gun laws with the SFF for wins in the Upper House.
All that said, there are probably about as many guns floating around as when Howard first bit the bullet. The big difference is probably in the proportion of automatic and semi-automatic weapons to single shot weapons.

Cronyism still alive and well…”
Here, have a look at Kevin Rudd’s CV:
– Diplomat 1981-1989
– Shadow minister for Foreign Affairs 2001-2006
– Prime Minister 2007-2010
– Foreign Affairs minister 2010-2012
– Held various international positions since 2014
Show me one single person in Australia who is better qualified to be Australian Ambassador in Washington… “Cronyism” my a..e!

A bare six months after being elected, the Albanese government has surrendered almost all of the moral advantage it held over the public administration, and most of the moral advantage it held over the coalition, writes Jack Waterford who says, “Morrison’s abandonment of honest government made it imperative that he lose office. But Labor has yet to show any great reforming enthusiasm, or higher ideals of public stewardship.”

It’s not cronyism its masochism Alpo. Half the Cabinet refused “to serve” with him and now they’ve unleashed him on Washington – its not going to end well.
No surprise the Rudd haters are out in force this morning.
He is totally well qualified to be U.S Ambassador, good appointment in my view, consider the existing links Rudd has with the Biden administration and the wider diplomatic community.
Rex, you are a serial whinger about the Albanese Government.
Rudd has some interesting company:

UnAustralian: Morrison Furiously Calls Albo After Learning He Was Overlooked As Ambassador For Hawaii. The Former PM Was Sure That He Had Already Secretly Made Himself Ambassador Prior To The Election.
Well obviously boosters of various parties will line up accordingly on this mornings announcements.
Like Alpo, I do not see Rudd’s appointment as US Ambassador in the same light as AAT appointees at all. Many Liberal staffers or ex candidates appointed to the AAT were not legally qualified. They could not do the job.
Whereas Rudd is both qualified and experienced in foreign affairs as both a public servant and a former PM and minister. He can do the job. (Much better qualified than Joe Hockey for instance).
To me there is one obvious political benefit for Labor I would concede. Rudd frequently still likes to speak on domestic politics, sometimes bluntly. Having him as US Ambassador keeps him busy and out of the way a long way from Canberra. So yes it is good politics for Labor in that sense.
Rudd, Ambassador and Heather Ridout (ex neighbour) Consul General.
The band is back together.

Not only that, a good amount of them questioned his mental stability during the carpet bombing campaign on his character orchestrated by then Swan advisor Jim Chalmers.
Whether Rudd is mentally stable or not, he’s going to interfere, he will attempt to run his own foreign policy and get around Penny Wong.
I agree that it won’t end well.
The Rudd appointment does carry the risk that Rudd will free lance. OTOH, he is subject to instant recall and dismissal. OTOH, this appointment will help salve some significant psychological damage.
In intellectual terms he probably head and shoulders above possible alternatives.
Ditto his links with key people not only in the US but in China.
Pluses and minuses.
There is something else to consider. Albanese knows that the Labor Party virtually wasted post-PM Keating. In effect, this is a mistake that Albanese is refusing to repeat.
Albanese’s sure hand is on display again.
There you go Rex and Lars. Halving the psych sessions is a good idea and a right call as Ian Hickey, Researcher in clinical psychiatry.
Both the Americans and the Chinese will welcome this appointment.

Jack is turning into a bit of a grumpy old man, I am afraid.
Unlike the some Liberal boosters on this site, a true-blue Liberal thinks Rudd is a great choice…
I think Rudd to Washington is probably a good move.
We definitely need to adjust our relationship with the USA to be more independent and ensure there can be differences of opinion. Rudd certainly has the smarts and the ego to not get captured by the American establishment PR/war machine, and I think that can only be a good thing.
Will Rudd go off on his own adventures? Sure. I assume Albanese and Wong are prepared for whatever damage control is required. While I’m no fan of Rudd, I’m sure whatever he does he will be a keen and clear-eyed advocate for Australia’s interests.
11 ‘I”s in Ambassador Rudd’s statement.
Probably about average.

You are stuck in the ancient past, Lars… Update your database. You are sounding like those Greens supporters who insist that the ALP is Neoliberal because those Greens haven’t been able to overcome the trauma of the old Hawke and Keating governments, etc. No wonder the Liberals can do nothing without Murdoch, whereas the Greens can’t get anywhere on their own… you guys don’t deal with reality here and now, just cherry pick some old fossil and pretend that they are still alive… These days, the voters know better, as you have surely realised from the last few elections.
Rudd’s revenge reams Rupert. Well played ALP.
So why weren’t Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison offered ambassador jobs?
I understand Tony Abbott lobbied to be High Commissioner to the UK, but was told by Turnbull that he was not suitable.
Does ScoMo have a future on the international cocktail circuit?
Rudd will be loving the U.S ambassadors residence in D.C. A plum prize in the ex-pollie gravy train.

sprocket, these days the true-blue Liberals find themselves more comfortable in the company of the Teals. That’s the tragedy of the Liberal party: they are losing their moderate side, which is the perfect recipe to remain in opposition for a very long time.
This is also a great announcement, and its a pity more publicity is not given to it:
“Bronte Moules has been appointed Australia’s inaugural ambassador for human rights.
Australia has appointed an ambassador for gender equality, Stephanie Copus-Campbell,”
Boerwar
I agree with you on managing Rudd. He has a considerable intellect, and could do some real good in the right role. Having read his book earlier this year, his interest in international diplomacy and managing conflict with China is genuine. As I said too, focusing him on something other than domestic politics is a shrewd move.
It is a while since we have had a truly formidable minister for foreign affairs.
Rudd in DC is potentially a considerable complement to Wong’s efforts.

I don’t know, nath… I suspect that Joe Hockey may have eaten all the plums and gravy and left nothing for his successors, who will have to do the real work that Hockey never did.
“On the other hand, let’s not forget that between Rudd 2007 and Rudd 2022 there are 15 years of maturity. That’s a long time spent developing and growing up.”
Yup. He’s being given a chance to be a positive part of the Australian political scene. Hope he doesn’t blow it. If it works out could be a major positive. Hopefully people will give it a chance and see where it goes.

Having once worked in a Department that reported to Rudd, I would not pretend he has a small ego.
But if you have ever been to a conference in Washington DC, that is nothing unusual in that town.

What do they have to offer- look at their CVs.
Compare their CVSs to what Gillard has done since being PM.

Morrison to be Ambassador to Hawaii.
Boerwar 12.05pm
Thanks; there are some great appointments in that list, and the inclusive balance of the appointments is welcome.
Thinking further about Rudd, there is one more political dimension of his appointment that I un-apologetically think is a good thing.
Having Rudd in charge in Washington will provide a counter-balance to Scomos appointment of former Liberal staffers like Justin Bassi as head of ASPI in ASPI’s new Washington office. Rudd has not blindly followed the USA on every past decision. We need to shift that direction.
Prime Minister missed a huge opportunity to recall Sinodinos.
Remember when Turnbull declined to endorse Rudd as un sec gen – thus killing his campaign ?
Weren’t too many people upset about it at the time.
Heather Ridout has more appointments than achievements.
Rudds great quality is self-promotion. Always has been.
He’s left a trail of carnage in his political life, but don’t let me get in the way of the conga-line of turd polishers here.
