No further national voting intention polls this week after the weekend Newspoll. Presumably this means the monthly Resolve Strategic will be along next week in the Age/Herald. Roy Morgan has for some time come along fortnightly and did not report last week, but the manner of its reporting is notoriously hard to predict. Together with the ongoing New South Wales by-elections count, which is covered in the post below this one, that just leaves the following:
• Roy Morgan did have an SMS poll of 1080 respondents conducted on Monday and Tuesday which found Josh Frydenberg favoured to lead the Coalition by 38.5%, ahead of Scott Morrison on 31% and Peter Dutton on 12.5%. The question specifically asked, “if you were a Liberal or National Party voter and helping to choose the Coalition Leader for the next Federal Election, who would you prefer”.
• The West Australian had a poll by Painted Dog Research on Wednesday which found Mark McGowan’s approval rating in Western Australia had fallen from 77% to 64% since December, having peaked at 91% in September 2020, with disapproval up from 14% to 25%. The poll was conducted Friday to Tuesday from a sample of 654.
• Recommended viewing and listening: Antony Green explains the dark art of election night results projection, while pollsters Peter Lewis and John Utting discuss the even darker art of opinion polling on 2SER’s Fourth Estate program.

😆 ah yes, that’s the one.
The liberals security scare campaign reminds me of days gone by during the GFC. Experts in their respective fields lining up to pour cold water on coalition talking points & all of it unreported by the media. They seem to be doing a slightly better job this time round, will it continue?

poroti,
I think we have had the rumblings of a similar contretemps over here in NSW when some agitators saw that our Selective Schools were ending up with a lot of Asian and Subcontinent Asian students taking up places. However, the Education Department didn’t institute quotas, nor did they make all schools Comprehensive. Instead, the word went out that the best way to reverse the trend was to study just as hard as those students and you would get your child in too. The clamor died down after that.
”
One of the agitators was a Labor MP and Minister in Bob Carr ministry by name Anderson. He was perceived as rival leadership contender to Carr. It is opinion of some commentators that Carr was able to suppress and withstood Anderson challenge because Anderson made the fatal mistake of being an agitator to institute quotas for Anglo-Saxons in Selective schools.

So, Boerwar, how many Bludgers do you say don’t think all of those things are also bad? And do you have any evidence to back it up?
Edit: And how many of them did those things while purporting to adhere to liberal democratic principles?’
———————————————-
Of course all Bludgers think all of those things are bad.
The question is why single out Israel.
If you seriously think any of the above did not happen I suggest you re-order the set to suit your version of the facts. It makes no difference to my case.
Why ‘purporting’ to be anything at all is supposed to make a difference to the ethics of killing a hundred thousand completely innocent people is beyond me.

If the US has made this offer then there is a real chance of things settling down. As long as the article I posted yesterday was right. It argued that these missiles, which the US claims are defensive but the Russians argue can be easily swapped to offensive, are what is really at the heart of it all . An offer like this would definitely ease Russian fears….’

It is performance art. What are the Russians going to learn in an inspection that they don’t know perfectly well already? The rascally cunning bit is that it might give the appearance that Putin has scored a ‘win’ over the perfidious yankees.

I am not convinced it was a Putin false flag operation. The evidence is that somebody fired 8 artillery rounds. Who fired them, from where, and at whose behest we don’t know.

Crosby and Abbott might have recommended Downer name.
Isn’t it true Abbott is appointed as some sort of UK Trade official?
Also, recently Downer was High Commissioner in London for 5 years.
When I think of the fallibility of juries, say for example the ones who sent thousands of African-American men and women to execution because of their color, of the couple of juries closer to home who voted to send Lindy Chamberlain to jail for life for murdering her baby daughter, I chuckle at remarks like the one quoted above.
In the case of Pell its a little-known fact that there were two juries: one that found him guilty and an earlier one that couldn’t reach a decision. Which jury do we prefer when we go jury shopping?
The basic problem was this: Pell’s defence team called witnesses who swore that he could not have committed the crime of which he was accused because he was elsewhere. They were eye witnesses to this effect. The Crown’s problem was that this evidence was never rebutted. This we had the evidence of the accuser and the evidence of the other witnesses who said Pell was otherwise innocently engaged at the time of the alleged offence. The key point was that this exculpatory evidence – of equal weight before the Court to the complainant’s – was not challenged. Therefore there was clearly reasonable doubt, raised and not challenged, concerning Pell’s guilt. Hence the High Court acquitted him.
However much you might hate Pell, and all he stands for, you have to take a step back from your personal feelings to remember that hard cases make bad law. This means that what might look like a “hard” result can very often be counterintuitively correct, because it upholds the fundamental principles of the legal system that everyone – the innocent and the guilty – rely on to get a fair hearing before the law. Whatever Pell’s personal failings, there will be plenty of genuinely innocent people in the future, charged with crimes they did not commit, who will thank their stars that Pell appealed his verdict, and won.
We live in a society of laws, not a village of hatreds.

FFS , why do you claim the Russkiys know exactly what is going on in secret US bases in Europe ?
Tom
Agreed.
The original point goes to BK’s question about why it was possible to be anti-semitic by criticizing the State of Israel.
My point is this. Why choose Israel from states which are behaving in the same, or worse, manner?
The criticism of Israel’s behaviour might be valid in and of itself.
But why select Israel’s behaviour from a set of similar or worse behaviours?

This one does not remotely pass the pub test. Why?
Everyone claims to be the good guys. The Nigerian Government claimed it was the good guys when it massacred the Biafrans. Aung Sung Su Chyi was explaining why the Rohynga massacres and expulsion was a good thing forced on Myanmmar by the Rohynga. The Chinese reckoned they doing good by reuniting Tibet with China. Israel reckons that the Palestinians are infested with terrorists who want to push the Jews into the sea. Take a look at the Sri Lankan good guy crapola.
Whoever heard of any government explaining that they decided to kill 100,000 civilians because they, the government, were evil?

In my fully considered opinion Pell is an evil shitstain on the fabric of society, who deliberately, with forethought, personally psychologically tortured hundreds of the victims of the child rapists he protected, and their families. Look it up. He has cost his paedophile protection society many tens of millions of dollars, and has presided over a precipitous fall in the numbers of ‘faithful’ who are prepared to admit to any connection with that disgusting organisation. He is rightfully reviled as an prime example of the worst kind of human being, being proud, arrogant and totally lacking in common decency and any empathy with and sympathy for the victims of his foul, hypocritical, criminal cult. An utter failure in his life and career.
GG defends him. Look it up.

Pell was innocent and was totally exonerated.

___________________
Could not agree more with you on the result from the High Court decision. Acquitted on all charges on appeal.
Unfortunately though for my outlook on it he was part of a management regime that move paedophile priests from one parish to another (oh didn’t it become embarrasing later when those same priests became actually really honest to truth convicted of those crimes…)
On that basis I’ll form my opinion of Pell so I’ll take his ‘undeserved’ punishment as the karma bus.
So yep you’re right on the exonerated for that decision but I don’t agree with the horseshit. sorry. I don’t think I’m alone.

I don’t think people thought boat people were terribly likely to be or become terrorists. Actually, I haven’t much clue what white Australians were thinking.
Not wanting ancient foreign hatreds here? Not wanting gangs? Not wanting competition for jobs? Not wanting tax dollars spent on foreigners?
I’ve never met anyone who supported Howard’s border protection thing who could explain it rationally. I’ve asked questions, then raised problems with their answers, only to see them shift their comments to a different but parallel line.
If anyone can enlighten me on what sentiment Howard tapped, I’d appreciate it.
All I can surmise is that White Australia either never really died, or was resurrected (sorry for the religious language) by Howard, to his eternal discredit.
The fact we tolerate offshore ‘processing’ (really indefinite imprisonment) indicates it is still alive and the nation is unwell because of it.
