Essential Research leadership and COVID polling

The shine continues to come off Scott Morrison’s COVID-boosted personal ratings, plus new evidence of a softening in support for the Coalition among women.

The fortnightly Essential Research poll includes the pollster’s monthly leadership ratings, which gives Scott Morrison his weakest results since the onset of COVID-19 – down six on approval to 51% and up four on disapproval to 40%, with his lead as preferred prime minister narrowing slightly from 48-28 to 46-28. Anthony Albanese is up two on approval to 41% and down one on disapproval to 35%. These numbers have been fed into the BludgerTrack poll aggregate, sharpening Morrison’s established downward trend.

Approval of the federal government’s response to COVID-19 has also deteriorated, with a nine point drop in the good rating since last month to 44% and a six point increase in poor to 30%. Among respondents in New South Wales, the good rating for the federal government has slumped from 62% to 44%, and that for the state government is down from 69% to 57%. A range of other questions are featured on matters relating to COVID-19, including findings that 36% would be willing to get the Pfizer vaccine but not AstraZeneca (5% said vice-versa); that 40% believe the vaccine rollout is being down efficiently, down from 43% a month ago (and 68% earlier in the year); and that 64% believe it is being done safely, down from 67%.

The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1099; full results can be viewed here.

Elsewhere, the Age/Herald yesterday published results aggregated from the three monthly Resolve Strategic polls which compared current voting intention with how respondents recalled having voted in 2019, and found women were more likely to have shifted away from the Coalition (down four points to 37%) than men (down one to 41%). On the subject of Resolve Strategic, Macquarie University academic Murray Goot casts a critical eye over its (and to a lesser extent Essential Research’s) attitudinal polling in Inside Story and takes aim at its refusal to join the Australian Polling Council and adhere to its transparency standards.

So instead say the sweet wine or substance you mean and avoid confusion. Not hard.

Instead of you are too hysterical triggered or whatever.

Very true. BB is actually asserting that would he engage in some gay sex he would be a Top. And a demeaning one too. Very sad.

There’s no end to Nath’s wokeness. He invents an Asian wife so he can tout his colorblind credentials, and now he’s supporting Guytaur.

What bullshit will he peddle next? That he’s only here to make peace between the warring factions?

Actually I think I’ve already done that one. I’m anti-racist and pro-gay. Find something I’ve posted that doesn’t reflect this.

  3. Coastal Sydney has mild sunny winters so people spend more of winter outside

Gladys was poster child for lockdown lite, the experiment is not working and I think she is being leant upon by Prime Minister, Health Minister Hazzard and Police Minister Elliott – lovely chaps NOT

I don’t know why Dr Kerry Chant doesn’t just resign

The NSW-Vic border crossing controls are set up better this year, 21 km from the border outside the border communities. Last year the checkpoint was on the river and took 90 minutes to get thru
Yesterday cars were slowed from 110km, to 80km, 40, 20 then directed into a toilet stop area where Vic plated vehicles displaying border permits on dash were waved through. Car never stopped moving

friends who suffered under Gladys decisions when she made a hash of transport ministry call her Bin Chicken in tones of hatred. She will survive this

  4. I’m far from an expert in the intricacies of gay sex, but I wasn’t aware swallowing was an activity exclusive to bottoms. Or even homosexuals for that matter.

  6. The only reason people thought Ash was gay was because one of her early doubles partners was Casey Dellacqua and when she went on her break from the sport some people speculated that she had personal issues but it turned out she just wanted to try something different.

Saw a picture this morning of Gladys looking at Dr Chant and “if looks could kill” was what came to mind.
i also understand that it is not Dr Chants role to call the lockdown.

  8. My knee jerk re: getting a secdond cv-19 shoty @ 6 weeks, is OK no problem, provided a third jab is administered say after another 12 weeks. I’d be interested in any comments esp from Cud and RHW. PS I had my first AZ shot a week ago.

Yes, I think that her powers and responsibilities are different to those of other states’ CMOs, as well as the commonwealth’s.

  10. HAVE BOOSTER SHOTS BEEN PROCURED? ? ?

or is that can being kicked down the road because the demand for booster shots will be before winter ie after the election

  11. Labor Governments do stuff, Coalition ones look after their mates. If something needs doing, a Coalition Government will either do nothing until forced by circumstances or mates, then totally stuff it up. Or they’ll throw the odd millions or billions to mates to so they can do it at a profit, then they totally stuff it up.

Why try to even suggest otherwise?

    I concur.

  17. “ But Chant did indeed say “six weeks”.
    Utter madness!”

Perhaps not, if that strategy is backed up by a plan for everyone who has got AZ to date to get a third, rMNA vaccine, jab in about 5-7 months time. That’s certainly what I’m looking at doing around Xmas time.

  18. I note the costumed General JJ was out promoting the new Govt ads today.

Shouldn’t the Prime Minister be the one leading the way in terms of communication ?

Why is Morrison in hiding at Kirribilli instead of being a Prime Minister in Canberra when the nation is in serious trouble ??

  19. Lt. Gen Frewen was silly to take on the responsibility of the rollout of the vaccines but he probably didn’t have a choice. It will be him who takes the fall if this goes further pearshaped. But I guess he’s got nothing to really lose as he’s reached the maximum rank, the next CDF likely to come from the RAN.

  20. CMO Kelly re-states the second AZ jab is licensed to be given between 4-12 weeks after the first jab. 12 weeks being the optimal.

  21. In regards to what I think are Dutton’s comments

    @chaser tweets

“Sydney’s outbreak happened due to public complacency” says federal minister who still hasn’t sorted out quarantine

  22. “ 12 weeks being the optimal.”

We now know that 22-24 weeks appears to be the optimal period for the 2nd jab (also that 3rd jabs are also a good idea). BUT with Delta in the community bringing forward one’s second AZ does make sense, as there is still a relevent immune response. Especially given that it seems that we may have an abundance of rMNA vaccines by the end of the year for a further booster.

  23. AE

If the medical advice supports this, the LNP should do this messaging right away. Faster uptake of AZ. So even if they are doing it for their mates they have nothing to lose on the political front.

  24. Why is Morrison in hiding at Kirribilli instead of being a Prime Minister in Canberra when the nation is in serious trouble ??
    ——————
    Is Dutton building a coup?

  25. “For a over a goddamn year the Libs have been screaming their lungs out about the very reasonable measures put in place by state governments, demanding again and again that they open up (thereby risking lives), supporting sociopaths like Clive Palmer in their attempts to undermine the states, and pointing to NSW as the reason lockdowns aren’t needed – ignoring, of course, the vast quantities of evidence overseas of what happens without restrictions”

I think its time we were equally suspicious of the haste, vested interest and motivations behind the “we must open up” cheerleaders.

Maybe, just maybe, we need to think about it carefully and proceed with caution. Not just assume that its a huge benefit to anything other than a minority

  26. Gladys is warning about the danger of close family members infecting their loved ones, citing the instance of the death of a 90 year old grandmother today who caught the virus “in family circumstances”.

This is obviously what happens when you lock down infected and non-infected people in the same house together.

You can understand a family member walking in, infected off the street, and accidentally infecting the rest of the household. But forcing them to stay indoors with their family if sick (but not sick enough to be hospitalised) is stupid.

All sick people should be placed in the Commonwealth quarantine facilities built by the federal government… oh… wait…

But seriously (because Commonwealth quarantine facilities are such a joke), where are the “Pro Tips” from the geniuses in NSW Health about how best to isolate infected members of the household trapped inside with non-infected members?

Do we stuff a towel under the door? Open a window and use a fan to try and gee up some negative air flow? What about toilet facilities? Food? TV facilities, reading material to wile away the hours? Disinfection regimes? Where can we obtain PPE?

  27. [… both of us are very convivial and not smart arses in any way . . . ]

    Yeah, nah.

One of the reasons I took a break from PB was because I found myself becoming a complete smart arse, when I didn’t consider myself to be like that; but if I wasn’t, I was fast becoming so.

I was attacking people right, left and centre. For no reason other than trying to keep up.

I needed a re-set. And I took it. And I took a break from politics, too.

Far happier now. And not inclined to indulge in the interminable argy-bargy.

Last year, and this year, Victoria (the State, not the person) has taken a merciless bashing from the msm, and NSW, and the Fed govt, during a very stressful time. For me, personally, it was because of having to present, post-surgery, in settings where just being there was making myself more vulnerable to infection by covid. And there were many others in like situations.

Recon, whoever you are, I find your sexual references tedious, but you’re probably young, and think you’re virile and immortal. Enjoy it while it lasts. Whatever. I couldn’t care less. However, I doubt you’d vote for Dan in a pink fit.

As for Lars, I wouldn’t have a clue. But appears like a shit-stirring-I’m-better-than-you-anyway, for the sake of it, to me.

I could go on, but I won’t. I just wish you all, all of you, the best. See how I’ve mellowed!

But, anyway, take care all of you.

In 6 weeks time there is a reasonable chance you’ll be able to get Pfizer. If that looks likely (do your research) then do so.

If it looks like that aint going to happen and everything is going tits up, then anything is better than nothing.

Well, some in Corporate America wanted to patent some Asanas of Yoga (I kid you not).
The story goes like this . Some people in a big company in US practiced Yoga during their recess. Some of them thought they should patent those Yoga asanas they practice. When some one pointed that Yoga is invented in India, the people, who wanted to patent, asked where is patent for that. The other person said that the Yoga Asanas were invented thousands of years. The people who wanted to patent applied for the patent.

  31. Comment on the Age/SMH live blog.

Historians would be hard pressed to find a period in history where a government had failed the Australian people like the current federal government. This mob should hang its head in shame.

The next newspoll is going to be very interesting

  32. Norman Swann must be shitting himself if he’s getting a second vaccination 9 weeks after the first.

When everything I’ve heard from his daily covid updates has been to wait 12 weeks, because efficacy.

    What’s going on?

  33. Norman Swann must be shitting himself if he’s getting a second vaccination 9 weeks after the first.

Quite – but it makes the “fully (but ineffectually) vaccinated” statistics look better than they are.

ACT Health booked in my second shot 11 weeks after the first; how much efficiency am I losing by not waiting the full 12 weeks?

  34. Why have economists endorsed the policy of suppression with more enthusiasm than, for example, political and business leaders?

this is a very good essay by john quggin (u. qld) & richard holden (unsw). i highly recommend it. short & succinct : 3 good reasons, clearly presented. very well worth the short time it takes to read it. -regards, a.v.

1 – economists understand the concept of exponential growth.

2 – economists understand counterfactuals — that is, the need to specify what would have happened under an alternative policy.

3 – most importantly, economists understand about trade-offs.

“We can’t seem to hurry the supply of jabs in arms, but couldn’t something be done about those speedy covid tests we keep hearing about?”

Yes, its interesting isn’t it. We’re exporting these tests to other countries. Certain “experts” are insisting that the plebs can’t be allowed to do their own testing.

One thing we should be doing is changing the culture, making self testing the norm. Even if 60+ percent of the population is vaccinated, we are still going to need a combination of public health measures. Mask, tracing and what would be invaluable is very high rates of self-administered testing.
