The year ahead

Informed speculation suggests a federal election will be held in the second half of this year, though views differ as to whether it will be sooner or later.

Dennis Shanahan of The Australian, who is always well plugged into government’s line of tactical thinking, wrote on Monday on the likelihood of a federal election in the second half of this year ($) rather than the first half of the next, that being the full extent of the window for a normal election of the House of Representatives and half the Senate. This basically boils down to a view that the government’s perceived current dominance means the sooner it goes the better, tempered by a desire to avoid an election in winter.

An unidentified Liberal MP quoted in The Australian ($) said they were “almost certain” they were “almost certain” the election would be in August or September, although another felt November more likely since an earlier election would be seen as too opportunistic. Why November would be a whole lot better on that count is unclear, since there seems to be no particular obstacle to Morrison holding out until May next year, by which time it will have been a full three years since the last election. For what it’s worth, the latter MP was also quoted saying it “also depends on if Labor ditch Anthony Albanese and get someone more electable”.

In more definite news for the year ahead, the Western Australian state election is set for March 13 — I am presently furiously hard at work on my election guide, which I can assure those of you who like that kind of thing will be a classic of its genre. As for opinion polling, the silly season proved no obstacle to Newspoll last year, which opened its account with a poll conducted from Wednesday, January 8 and Saturday, January 11, so there may be action on that front this or (probably more likely) next weekend.

  2. Calls grow in Congress for Trump to be removed by impeachment or the 25th Amendment

(CNN)A growing number of lawmakers — including from Democratic leadership — are calling for President Donald Trump to be removed from office either through impeachment or the 25th Amendment to the Constitution after a violent mob of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol on Wednesday.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer put out a statement Thursday denouncing the “insurrection” at the Capitol “incited by the President,” and saying, “This President should not hold office one day longer.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi joined the call later Thursday at a news conference.

“I join the Senate Democratic leader in calling on the Vice President to remove this President by immediately invoking the 25th Amendment,” Pelosi said. “If the vice president and the Cabinet do not act, the Congress may be prepared to move forward with impeachment that is the overwhelming sentiment of my caucus and the American people.”

    https://edition.cnn.com/2021/01/07/politics/trump-impeachment-25th-amendment-congress-schumer/index.html

  3. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has just said that if President Trump is not removed under the 25th Amendment, Congress may go forward with impeachment proceedings. She said Trump “incited an armed insurrection against America” at the U.S. Capitol.

  4. Possum Comitatus on twitter has an interesting thread on protesters carrying flex cuffs and other dark incidents not mentioned by journalists.

  5. Twitter has fully banned Donald Trump!

It won’t stop him Tweeting though. Last night he used Dan Scavino’s account to Tweet his, kind of, agreement to hand over power to Joe Biden in an orderly fashion. So, knowing Trump he’ll probably keep using Scavino’s account until they can Scavino.

At last Boris has got something right.

Boris Johnson has “unreservedly condemned” Donald Trump for inspiring the dramatic assault on the Capitol building, making the British Prime Minister the first world leader to directly blame the US President for the riot.

    https://www.theage.com.au/world/europe/boris-johnson-says-donald-trump-is-to-blame-for-capitol-siege-20210108-p56sjq.html

I’m slightly cynical about this because Boris Johnson knows which way the wind is blowing and can desert a sinking ship quicker than most. He’s also a very cynical politician. I wonder if he said that, before or after Biden had received all the Electoral College votes he needed to be declared POTUS? 🙂

  11. its a shame that the media organisations who helped and controlled Trump with these domestic terrorist acts such as Murdoch and cronies will not be classed as a terrorist organisation.

  14. As I see it, Morrison is a purveyor of misinformation himself and encourages it in his MPs.

Asked on Thursday about Christensen’s promotion of conspiracy theories, Mr Morrison said “Australia is a free country. There’s such a thing as a freedom of speech in this country, and that will continue”.

The Nationals MP’s reckless dishonesty should have been called out by the leader of the government.

Christensen is a Coalition backbencher who has repeatedly claimed that the US election was stolen from President Donald Trump with “dodgy votes”. Facebook has rebuked him for his misleading claims.

Morrison’s failure to rebuke Christensen sends an inconsistent message to the rest of the world. Is China now allowed to claim “free speech” in peddling disinformation campaigns about the origin of the coronavirus?

But Scotty is such a fan of Trump he couldn’t even get the words right.

I wonder if Populist leader bro, Scott, will have the guts to criticise this?

President Trump has suggested to aides he wants to pardon himself in the final days of his presidency, according to two people with knowledge of the discussions, a move that would mark one of the most extraordinary and untested uses of presidential power in American history.

Mr. Trump has shown signs that his level of interest in pardoning himself goes beyond idle musings. He has long maintained he has the power to pardon himself, and his polling of aides’ views is typically a sign that he is preparing to follow through on his aims. He has also become increasingly convinced that his perceived enemies will use the levers of law enforcement to target him after he leaves office.

No president has pardoned himself, so the legitimacy of prospective self-clemency has never been tested in the justice system, and legal scholars are divided about whether the courts would recognize it. But they agree a presidential self-pardon could create a dangerous new precedent for presidents to unilaterally declare they are above the law and to insulate themselves from being held accountable for any crimes they committed in office.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/07/us/politics/trump-self-pardon.html

And I can guarantee you that Scott J.Morrison would do the same for himself and his Ministers in a heartbeat if he could.

  17. The unknown liberal insider, the source, the MP, the Senator, the well placed operative, the shaker and maker said it all depends.
It all depends on whether their estimation of the qualities of their PM is the legend he, and they, think he is.
A rather well known legend has recently had a fall, the stock market has had to borrowed a larger belt, a little matter of an unresolved pandemic remains and a largish dragon has re-awoken.
The well known overseas owned, national newspaper remains unrepentant despite the vagaries of recent events with the oft disproven sages serving up the same muck.
I’d prefer to see the results of some post Christmas, post bush fire, post pandemic, post recession, post stock market bubble and post renewed house price boom, perhaps also including some reference to our largest northern neighbours and their particular hangovers before determining an election result.
The greatest technological boom ever experienced is in full swing and ths confidence predicting an end point is staggering.
In the meantime I’ll continue to enjoy the contributions of many.

  26. Fantastic opinion piece by Emma Shortis:

Australians cannot avoid the truth of our complicity. Morrison’s warm friendship with the President, our conservative media ecosystem’s promulgation of American conspiracy theories and giving a platform to US white supremacists – all of it helped Trump and the fascism he encouraged and unleashed. That can’t just be put back in the box.

Australians are told that having such a close relationship with the United States is essential to the maintenance of our national security. But what kind of security is this? And what damage has it done to our relationship with the incoming Biden administration? There was never any security or strategic justification for the closeness of the Trump administration and our own government. The only reason for it was ideological.

It is only through an honest reckoning with that ideological closeness, and with our complicity in Trumpism, that Australians might be able to re-consider our place in the world. We did not have a binary choice between subservience to an anti-democratic white supremacist and abandoning the alliance. There were – and still are – other options.

I think some of the Senate Republicans quickly realised this isn’t a game when it came to them and that’s why they changed their minds about their objections.

Go back to your cabin and shut the door it’s gonna be a long cruise.
