Things other than Queensland and the US

Some minor news on the local opinion polling front to keep things ticking over.

With the last open thread threatening to fall off the bottom page amid a thicket of Queensland and US-specific posts, here’s a refresher. Newspoll is having an off-week to avoid Queensland election static, although Essential Research should be along with its fortnightly attitudinal results tomorrow. All I have to relate other than that is:

• There has apparently been progress in the establishing of an Australian Polling Council, potentially meaning a new age of full disclosure by pollsters of their weights and breakdowns. Its members are YouGov, Essential Research, Ipsos, uComms, JWS Research, Lonergan Research and Telereach.

• The Australia Institute has published a report on attitudes to climate change that I’m a little too busy for right now, but you can find it here.

Kos Samaras of RedBridge Group discusses polling conducted in September showing 57% of Melburnians think the state Liberal opposition has not “played a constructive role during this pandemic.

Don’t tell me you’re trying to pull the Malcolm Turnbull “there are no factions in our party” (paraphrasing) nonsense. The Labor Right and Left factions most certainly do exist and there is a massive gulf between them. You only have to read the posts on this blog to see evidence of that.

Greens being in bed with LNP on preferences to win a seat while children being impressoned in detention centres, while QLD LNP planned curfews for kids claiming high crime rate.

    The party of hypercrits.

Annoying to hear @frankelly08 & @michellegrattan downplaying Labor’s win in Queensland. A 5.1% swing to ALP! Annastacia might get 52 seats! EPIC win. But they go on as if #covid19 was the only issue. Grattan also saying Morrison is popular. NOT UP HERE! #auspol

  3. The Greens’ South Brisbane branch secretary posted on her personal Twitter account a news article quoting the electorate’s Labor MP, Jackie Trad, adding: “This party is the nastiest skank bitch I’ve ever met. DO NOT TRUST THEM. they are a fugly slut!!!!!” to the tweet.

“Retiring Labor MP Kate Jones … “It is not good enough for the Greens to pretend there is nothing to see here. They are the first party to point at everyone else and say, ‘The standard you walk past is the standard you accept'”.

  4. The Labor Right and Left factions most certainly do exist and there is a massive gulf between them.

So says a self-serving ignoramus with absolutely nfi.

  6. Good Morning

I see the whining in victory from the Labor suspporters is in full flight.

So scared of Murdoch. No embrace of the Greens like Jacinda Ardern has done.
No more Labor praise for Jacinda Ardern on this site.

  7. “The Queensland Greens literally threw shit at Labor. That’s all you need to know about their juvenile mindset.”

    ***

Like I said, the unhinged Labor Right would rather sulk about the success of the Greens than celebrate the defeat of the LNP.

  8. Labor Right and Left may exist, but prejudiced guesses about which posters belong where are silly, when PB contains such a mixture of opinion. We are not all Labor members, or indeed, members of anything. I’m repeating myself, but labels do not aid sensible discussion.

Why do Grattan and Kelly have a problem with strong, successful women from the left? They bagged Gillard with a passion and the Queensland premier is another of their favourite targets. Do they discredit the NSW premier in the same way?

    Burn Book

The Burn Book is a book created by The Plastics to start rumors, stories and gossip about all the girls (and several guys) who go to North Shore High School.

Most of the members in The Plastics contributed to creating this book. The only girls who were not mentioned were Cady Heron, Gretchen Wieners and Karen Smith because they played a part in writing some of the pages in the book.

After Regina George found out the truth about the Kalteen Bars, she added herself to the book as “a fugly slut” to help prove she wasn’t the one who wrote it.

Regina took the Burn Book into Mr. Duvall’s office, saying she found it in the girls’ bathroom. She then left the office to distribute photocopied pages of the Burn Book around the school hallways.

When students learned about this, it sparked huge controversy to both female students and teachers. Later, it all ended when Cady took the blame for whole ‘Burn Book’ incident.

Regina George: This girl is the nastiest skank bitch I’ve ever met. Do not trust her. She is a fugly slut.

“South Brisbane – where community worker Amy MacMahon defeated former deputy premier and treasurer Trad – was the only seat Labor lost on an otherwise successful election night.”

    ***

Which is apparently the reason why the Labor Right are sulking about the success of the Greens instead of celebrating retaining gov. Their hatred of the left knows no bounds.

Isn’t Trad from the Left of the Party?

  12. Lizzie

That’s why the Jacinda Ardern example is so powerful. It’s NZ Labour with a majority in its own right acting to prevent the split amongst progressives.

A purely political calculation that its to Labour’s advantage to work with the Greens.

The political astuteness of Ardern should give Labor partisans in Australia pause for thought.

Oh and I frequently make extremely critical posts directed at the Coalition, like pretty much every day, I’m just not afraid to hold Labor accountable at the same time. Someone has to around here. Forgive me for not subscribing to the view that a party that is propping up the rich elites can do no wrong.

Any comments about factions in the Greens?

Yep. But The Greens are Labor Haters, first and foremost. Plus, accepting of LNP preferences, in order to win, without a blush.

  15. The whole submarine issue is a disaster IMO. Well done, Chrisse Pyne. At least you got a job out of it.

The Defence Department may be forced to pay out tens of millions of dollars to a US company over a contract dispute involving crucial new escape and rescue equipment for Australian submarines.

The ABC can reveal the program to provide a “Submarine Escape Rescue and Abandonment System” by 2022 has now been placed on the department’s ‘Project of Interest’ list, marking it as a concern, after a year-long bitter standoff.

A confidential report completed for Defence last month recommends the contract with American-owned Phoenix International (Australia) be “terminated by agreement”.

In his report marked “sensitive”, the head of Defence’s Naval Shipbuilding Advisory Board concludes the relationship between both parties is “dysfunctional” and neither is “blameless”.

Professor Don Winter’s report also describes the contract drawn up by Defence’s Capability and Sustainment Group (CASG) as “inappropriate”.

Morrisons posts never get “ratioed” because “likes” are artificially boosted (bots) as comments grow.

Number of comments never exceeds likes.

    Hey C@t,
How does any political party NOT accept from preferences other parties once people have voted?
Further, isn’t the individual voter who directs her/his preferences on the ballot paper? So how can any party say that they will not accept preferences from another party?

Okay, I shall modify that. The Greens accepted a Preference Deal with the LNP in Queensland to put the LNP above Labor.

  22. Kill, kill, kill. This is so horrible.

The Trump administration just scrapped an Obama-era ban on a series of hunting practices that limited how hunters killed bears and wolves on Alaskan national preserves.
Hunters will soon be able to blind bears with lights, hunt them down with dogs, and bait them with human food like doughnuts.
They will also be able to kill wolves and coyotes in summer, when mothers wean pups, and it will be legal to shoot caribou from motorboats or while they’re swimming.
Some Alaskan politicians have welcomed the rollbacks, but conservationists have called them “amazingly cruel,” The Guardian reported.

That is total bullshit and you know it lol. It’s amazing how desperate you lot are becoming!

The Greens put Labor ahead of the LNP. Get your facts straight.

‘Josh Manuatu is a former staff member named publicly in the Australian newspaper as being involved’ .. Manuatu left Taylor’s office in June to become the director of the ACT Liberals, and organised them into a crashing defeat ..

  26. Zerlo

Despite your whining the reality of what Ardern is doing is a very stark contrast to Labor’s war against the Greens.

The difference between NZ and Australian Labor?
    Murdoch media.

    Labor is running scared.

  27. I am really getting tired of this bullshit about the Greens being a left wing party. They are a bourgeoise mob that play at being radical while enjoying a comfortable middle class life.

They like to be pure about fossil fuels but don’t both to concern themselves about how workers in fossil fuel related jobs need to be accommodated in new industries. They claim concern about poverty but are never seen out feeding the homeless. The claim to love nature but huddle together in the inner city.

  28. C@tmomma @ #55 Monday, November 2nd, 2020 – 9:28 am

The Labor Right and Left factions most certainly do exist and there is a massive gulf between them.

So says a self-serving ignoramus with absolutely nfi.

There are factions in every party, C@t. And Labor’s are probably the worst (i.e. the furthest apart). Most other parties at least try to present a united ideological front for public consumption. Labor doesn’t. It is fair enough to argue that this is a good and honest way for a party to behave, but it certainly costs them electorally.

  29. There was one thing about the Qld election that seemed very strange . It struck me last week when someone mentioned Poorlene. One Nation had during the campaign seemed to this casual observer to be almost completely absent. Normally Poorlene and her party are headline generators, lots of “Look at moi” and ‘controversial’ statements/stunt. This time ?????

  30. Greens only concern is to take seats of Labor Party.

They don’t care about welfare of Australians.

Devide and conquer during a pandemic is shameful and pathetic.

  31. Peter Stanton

We are all getting tired of this bullshit that the Greens are not a left wing party

It’s very good propaganda from some Labor partisans. Howver it’s not true.
The Greens policies are clear and very progressive left wing policies.
One example. The Greens have wanted more public housing than Labor.

  32. Speaking of people not handling the Saturday election result well, I had not seen this footage of Pauline Hanson reacting badly to questions from Murray Watt about why PHON failed. More comedy gold. Does anyone have a link to video of the James Ashby meltdown?
    https://twitter.com/MurrayWatt/status/1322683542824841216

As for the Greens, I am not anti-Green and wish Labor and Greens would join forces to defeat a common foe. However I must point out to Firefox that Labor got a far larger swing (5%) on Saturday than the Greens (-0.9%) did. The two electorates the Greens did best in consisted of one (Maiwar) where the Labor campaign “ran dead” similar to what they did with Zali Steggal’s run at Tony Abbott’s seat, and the other (South Brisbane) where the incumbent was compromised.

I don’t buy the defense of Trad that she did “nothing illegal”. It was still highly unethical, and a public servant would have been sacked for it, under QPS rules on “material conflict of interest”.

  33. “Robert Fisk, veteran British foreign correspondent, dies aged 74”

RIP. Fisk’s “The Great War for Civilisation” is one of the best books on middle east history and politics I have ever read. It rips to shreds the justifications for the invasion of Iraq, and covers so much more as well.

After spending Melbourne’s lockdown watching my UK mates galavanting around Europe and in bars and pubs, the temptation for payback over our summer is going to be high.

I don’t think four weeks of lockdown will be enough tbh. They’re starting from a higher base than Vic was.

  36. I’m just relieved that Annastacia beat the Morrison LNP in Queensland. I’ll leave the analysis and the bile to party strategists.
