Keeping it holy

Marking the sabbath with a compendium of federal preselection news, the most notable relating to the looming by-election in Groom.

Queensland’s Liberal National Party will take a break from electioneering tomorrow to determine its candidate for Groom, who is all but assured of a quick passage to parliament after the by-election on November 24. This contest has been enlivened by reports that David van Gend, an unsuccessful past nominee with unorthodox views on social issues, has emerged as the front-runner. Van Gend reportedly enjoys well-organised backing from religious conservatives, and Crikey reports he bears endorsement Eric Abetz, Matt Canavan, Miranda Devine and Howard-era Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson. As The Guardian notes, this comes at a time when conservative state MPs are making life difficult for their leadership by conjuring controversies around abortion at the sharp end of an election campaign. The LNP’s deep state would evidently prefer it if locals favoured Toowoomba councillor Rebecca Vonhoff or Australian Lot Feeders president Bryce Camm.

Other preselection news:

• In other Queensland federal preselection news, a gossip column in the Cairns Post reports Cairns regional councillor Brett Olds will seek preselection to succeed Warren Entsch in the far north Queensland seat of Leichhardt, and suggests Olds has the support of Entsch. The 70-year-old Entsch said before the last election that this term would be his last.

• The Western Australian Greens have preselected Dorinda Cox, an anti-domestic violence campaigner and former police office of Yamatji Noongar background, to lead the party’s Senate ticket at the next election, in place of the retiring Rachel Siewert. It is often the practice in the Greens for outgoing Senators to retire before the election and allow their preselected successor to fill their vacancy, but it is unclear if this is the idea on this occasion.

• The Australian Capital Territory election would seem to have been decided with a result of Labor 10 (down two), Liberal nine (down two) and Greens six (up four), which you can read all about here.

  1. A brief good evening all. This story shows that a Victorian V Line rail executive is being questioned about a $100,ooo personal fund transfer from a company awarded a cleaning contract. If only we had a Federal ICAC checking for things like this.

At this point, if anyone can explain how taxpayers “save” money by transferring public service functions to privatised or corporatised organisations, I’d like to hear them. Berejiklians aside, public service departments have rules and checks to avoid this sort of thing, or at least make it a lot harder.

Bonus points for anyone who can explain why importing executives from England gives any better quality leaders than developing and training our own.

  2. Saw the front page of the digital copy of today’s Herald Sun. Top two thirds AFL. Bottom third attacking Dan Andrews with headline “Betrayal”. Way over the top.

  6. So why DID Smuggo pick on Christina Holgate over those watches?
This article may provide a clue:

In 2018 Australia Post secured a lucrative commitment from Commonwealth Bank, Westpac and NAB to contribute $100 million a year to fund banking services in post office branches.

The deal is at the heart of the Cartier watch controversy, but Ms Cramp hailed it as a much-needed lifeline for post offices struggling to turn a profit.

“Christina Holgate came into the business and the first thing she did was say we are effectively losing $50 million providing underfunded bank services,” she said.

“She told the banks they have to contribute and cover the cost and she got them to agree.

I’ll bet the banks hate paying $100M pa to the francisees for providing banking services.

Did they tell Scotty they didn’t like it at their last schmooze?
Did Scotty promise to fix it for them?
Will Holgate’s successor quietly reverse the agreement so the banks can add that $100M to the executive bonuses?

  7. It was hilarious watching channel nine news tonight. They reported the ipsos poll in detail.
After the relentless attacks by the liberals and the media. Labor and Dan Andrews continue to have the support of the public. The fiberals not so much.

  15. There is plenty to throw at the Morrison Government, not the least of which is its corruption, its shady deals. Now that the C.19 crisis appears to be over(?), I’d like to see Labor prosecute its case via MPIs, just like Abbott did so successfully. To said end, mundo’s right.

Seems a very long stretch on ur part Maude, that it was some kind of political hit job on behalf of the banks!

Yes, it does seem like a stretch – hence they are questions, not assertions.

But we’d need an Integrity Commission to answer them.

You’re right of course. Sydney’s Daily Telegraph is just as bad if not worse. Ditto Brisbane’s Courier Mail. Then you’ve got The Australian, an oversized right wing pamphlet pretending be a quality broadsheet.

Now that the C.19 crisis appears to be over(?)

Nowhere near, with the Virus raging effectively out of control in the USA, Europe and many third world countries. For now we find ourselves in an island of safety but that could change any time.

    Regarding the questioning.

I don’t understand why the Health guy couldn’t have just conceded that the messaging to that Preston family was confusing. It clearly was.
    ………………………………………..
The statement in the email that the family was out of isolation was correct. The whole family had previously been in isolation. As at the date of the email isolation was no longer required.

But according to dhhs the family had been told multiple times that junior needed a negative test before HE could leave the house. Mum and dad must have wondered why junior needed the day 10 test if he was free to go to school. Dhhs have said adults in the house spoke perfect English.

Who to believe? Well dhhs does have reason to cover up but senior supervisors risk being exposed for covering up their subordinates errors.

OTOH we have a family that caught the virus by ignoring the rules and visiting other families.

My conclusion is that probably dhhs passed on unambiguous advice and the family ran with a cynical interpretation that saw junior sent off to school.

But ultimately it is by such minor breaches that the virus flourishes. Rather than looking to blame my take-home message is that strict rules like the Victorian lockdown are required if you want to do a Victoria and defeat the virus. Fuck-ups will always happen. Today we can thank the epidemiologists who imposed lockdown rules that worked, dhhs, health, police and other workers who executed the lockdown and a Premier who showed steely leadership that was essential.

And, do you realise how much mainstream media coverage they will get? Between 3/5ths of bugger all and bupkis. Tony Abbott used to have weekly meetings at News Corpse HQ in Holt Street, Sydney, to plan and co-ordinate his political tactics, backed up by the Murdoch media machine. He wrote regular, his, opinion pieces for their papers. He started out his career as a Murdoch reptile. They synergistically exploited that long-standing alliance for all it was worth to Abbott. Which was enough to get a flaky individual into the Prime Minister’s chair.

Now tell me, using examples based in reality, how Anthony Albanese can approximate that?

I’m not trying to be snarky, simply realistic.

  22. Windhover,
Thank you for explaining the true meaning of the DHHS email to the family affected by COVID-19.

Hmm, maybe it’s time to take a leaf out of your rhetorical book and start calling Dan Andrews, #Steely Dan? Especially when it comes to the way he deals with the media. 😉

  23. Fulvio Sammut @ #787 Monday, October 26th, 2020 – 8:05 pm

Well, C@t, he could start by selling his arse, like Abbott

Not possible. He would likely blush. Anyway, Tony Abbott had a unique ability to make you seem like you were the only person in the room he was selling his arse to. I have friends, one a former Labor HoR candidate, who were beguiled by Tony Abbott and kept trying to tell me what a nice person he really was when you met him socially. 🙄

Much of Abbott’s disruption was facilitated by the unwillingness of the crossbench to allow the government to shut down MPIs. This is not comparable to the current situation where the government has the numbers to shut down any parliamentary tactic it doesn’t like.

All those who trot out this line have either forgotten this fact or are making the point in bad faith .

    Which category are you in?

Morrison has at last put out a statement in which do gives no recognition to the success of the Victorian government.

“The Commonwealth Government welcomes the announcement by the Victorian Premier to ease restrictions from 11.59pm on Tuesday.

Victorians have worked hard and sacrificed a lot to get to this point. We thank them for their patience and perseverance.

Today’s announcement is a reflection of the dedication and effort of Victorians – taking the next step to reopen Victorian society and the state’s economy.

    . . .

Australia has been a world leader in fighting the virus to save lives and to save livelihoods and with today’s announcement, we look forward to Victoria continuing to make progress on the path to reopening and joining the rest of the country at Steps 2 and 3 in the national plan.“
    …………………………………………………………………..

It is the above paragraph in the pm’s statement that gives me the shits.

“Australia” has not been a world leader – the Feds have devolved responsibility to the States in relation to just about everything in relation to controlling the virus, including quarantine which is specifically a commonwealth responsibility. Every State has had to fight to implement and maintain social rules to control the virus with a chorus of irresponsible federal ministers squawking that the rules are unnecessary or econically restrictive etc etc.

Morrison has led this chorus of galahs who, had their advice been followed would have seen the virus rampant around Australia. How do we know this? Imagine if State borders were not closed to Victorians. Imagine if Victoria had tried to open earlier, with limited outbreaks suffered in Kilmore, Shepparton and the northern suburbs multiplied exponentially by now.

Morrison truly is the man who is not holding the hose. He never is if there are no optics in it. But look at him claiming “Australia’s world-leading effort”, all done without a hand on the hose.
