Newspoll: 52-48 to Coalition

A middlingly good reaction to the budget according to Newspoll, which does not record significant changes on voting intention or leadership approval from three weeks ago.

The latest Newspoll in The Australian has the Coalition leading 52-48, out from 51-49 last time, from primary votes of Coalition 44% (up one), Labor 34% (steady), Greens 11% (down one) and One Nation 3% (steady). Scott Morrison’s personal ratings are unchanged at 65% approval and 31% disapproval, while Anthony Albanese is steady on 39% approval and up three on disapproval to 43%. Morrison’s lead on preferred prime minister nonetheless narrows slightly, from 59-27 to 57-28.

The poll shows a broadly favourable response to the budget, which is rated good for the economy by 42% and bad by 20%, compared with 44% and 18% last year – although a lot more of the favourable response is merely quite good (35% compared with 29% last year) rather than extremely good (7% compared with 15%). Twenty-six per cent expect it will make them better off financially compared with 23% for worse off and 51% for uncommitted, which is less strong than last year (34% better off and 19% worse off) but fairly strong by historical standards.

Troublingly for Labor, 54% expressed more trust in “a Coalition government led by Scott Morrison” to “guide Australia’s recovery” compared with 32% for “a Labor government led by Anthony Albanese”, and only 33% felt Labor would have done a better job on the budget compared with 49% for a worse job. This compares with 37% and 45% last year and is their weakest net result since the Coalition came to power in 2013, although it’s within the error margin of 2015, 2016 and 2017.

The poll was conducted Wednesday to Saturday from a sample of 1527.

  1. Seriously the excuse making by the media and political allies is vomit inducing stuff.

This “good woman duped by bad boy” narrative is insulting to all female politicians. We can think for ourselves.

knew about Daryl’s China dealings (outside his electorate) in 2017. We’d expect a Premier – man or woman – to do something about it.

  2. Oh the irony of it all.
Dan Andrews works his butt off not having taken a day off for over 100 days, fronts the media every day being polite and taking questions from all comers including Murdochs hacks with their inane idiotic gotcha attempts, leading the way to reduce pandemic cases from 7oo odd to single figures saving hundreds of lives and his reward is the haters out there baying for his blood and demanding his resignation.
Fast forward to Gladys who is exposed in an ICAC enquiry for having an on going “close and personal” relationship with an allegedly corrupt ex minister of her party while she is Premier who she sacked two years ago for doing shady deals for his own benefit and stating to the enquiry that she has no recollection of certain matters until phone calls etc are played back to her and her memory suddenly returns. Demands are rightly made for her resignation and her grubby supporters jump to her aid reminding everyone what a wonderful job she did during the bushfires and how well she has handled the Covid epidemic.
So Dan who has indeed done a great job with both the bushfires and Covid has Murdoch and his grubby so called journalists baying for his blood but dear Gladys who is up to her eyeballs in all sorts of dirty business (some still to be revealed) is the pin up girl and should be spared the ignomy of getting kicked out of office which is what she deserves. So Covid is used to take down a champion of the people in Daniel Andrews but Covid is used as a reason to save the political skin of a devious and possibly corrupt politician in Gladys Berejilkian. Irony indeed.

Oh Victoria. There’s an elephant in the dining room (Fed responsibility for Quarantine and Aged Care) and everybody is looking for the mouse in the pantry (the ‘missing 6 minutes’).

Mr Andrews said. (not yet. Why not)”

I don’t know, but possibly because the other states exercised a bit more due dilligence and made sure they didn’t hire complete muppets?

For one thing, did the private firm’s hired by the other states sub-contract to another private firm that was quite obviously incompetent?

There is much more to it than merely “they all hired private security”.

  5. Patricia Karvelas (who insists she is objective in her reporting) whinges every day about Victoria being “jealous” of NSW and regularly has guests on her show to support her.

  6. Bull dust

You have nailed it in a nutshell!

In any case, the pandemic isn’t over and bushfire season is back.
Who knows what is in store.

  7. While I agree with OC that Victoria’s handling of its second Covid wave has not been optimal, it’s also the case that Victoria has come in for sustained political attack from the feds and heightened media scrutiny that other states have not had.

Case in point: both NSW and WA have had hotel quarantine breaches which have gone unremarked upon by the federal govt and have consequently had scant media attention. And as I understand it both NSW and WA are using security companies for their hotel quarantine enforcement.

  8. They chased Gillard for a bathroom renovated by her boy friend 30 years ago.

In this case it is a boy friend while she as premier and the sums involved is greater than the cost of renovating a bathroom.

The behavior of the press is very enlightening. Why the press expects to be taken seriously is beyond me.

  9. Lizzie
Certainly in NSW and Federally pandemic planning was ongoing and the detailed plans were available on the internet.
Did Victoria not do pandemic planning?

    Barney
How do I know this is a Victorian problem – 99+% of Covid cases in Australia since May are related to the failure of governance in Victorian hotel quarantine. Sure the governance in other states may not be perfect but it hasn’t led to this disaster

The constitutional (Elephant in Room) question
I wonder why no politician state or federal has taken this up and it has remained in the darker corners of the web

    Completely missing the point.
Has nothing to do with ‘being let down by a man’
It’s about what she knew, when she knew it and how she responded.
Who she was gettin’ in on with is her own business.

  11. Sky breaking news covering NSW Labor calling for resignation of Premier…now giving Jody McKay a good spot…now hearing from colleagues sticking by her…..difficult day for Gladys….biggest crisis for government….now Trump live. Turning off.

So, you have nothing to support your assertion.

  13. Lots of questions prime minister need to answer

The federal government did not do its duty of care by looking after quarantine , the federal government allowed the states to hire private firms .

plus the aged care which is also federal government responsibility had more deaths than hotel quarantine

  14. Bulldust:

yeah it sux for Andrews given that he is a good premier and has clearly been open and honest about the whole thing.

Yet the fact remains, hundreds of people have died in Victoria because of this outbreak. A tragedy that has not befallen any other state. Sure you can pass it off as pure good luck for the other states – yet still a great tragedy did happen in Victoria, and we can’t just ignore it and pretend no one needs to be held to account.

  15. ABC showing footage of Trump’s rally.

FMD – people are literally sitting shoulder to shoulder, at least half of them don’t have masks, some of the ones who do have masks are taking them off or lowering them below the nose.

Strategically positioned behind Trump are a group of black’s wearing a”Blacks for Trump” t-shirt

  16. Trump sounding crazy but disturbingly confident and ‘fluent’…really enjoying himself immensely…’we love you!’ the chant goes up…..if Trump keeps this up for three weeks……?

Dr Blind Freddie of the Tommy Institute, Dept of the Bleeding Obvious, is sticking with a Trump win.

  17. Scott Morrison is trying to take credit for the position that Australia is in .

Morrison should be ripped apart for this fraud he had nothing to do with why Australia is in the position it is now,

Who knows how bad the situation would be if Morrison had his way of no borders being closed , doubtful there would be as many state/territory with controllable numbers of the corona virus being spread

A pity Dan hadn’t fallen into the arms of a lady colleague for support and succor. We could cut him some slack.

Corbyn had particularly large campaign rallies filled with adoring fans chanting “we love you” too.

Why the focus on being held to account.

Surely it should be about correcting systems to minimise the chances of it happening again.

I would imagine that every State has made changes to their own systems from what has been learnt in Victoria.

  25. My initial argument was that there was a lack of governance in the Victorian hotel quarantine program. If nothing else, the evidence so far at the commission has proven this.

These rallies have been going on for months. They haven’t had much impact on the Trump campaign.

As Big A Adrian pointed out, Corbyn was adored by hordes of fans at huge rallies. Remember what happened to him? (If you’ve forgotten, just ask Firefox or Nicholas, they’d be happy to fill you in.)

Scrooter can say and/or do anything he likes with immunity.

  29. Turnbull confirms what a patronising twat he is pronouncing that flesh and blood Gladys *craved* love and affection.

    (abc online)

  30. Of all the people Berejiklian could have chosen to have a secret romance with, she picked a guy who’s been forced to leave the Parliament over dodgy dealings, and has been investigated by ICAC twice.

Even knowing of the substantial accusations against her shady lover, she stuck to him until just a few months ago. Again, secretly.

She’s not a naive schoolgirl, or a faceless, lonely woman in flat-heeled shoes swept off her feet by the dashingly handsome rascal. It’s not a Daphne DuMaurier novel or a Mills & Boon book. She’s the Premier of NSW responsible for millions of people and hundreds of billions of dollars in receipts and expenditure. She also responsible for the administration of the laws of the state that she is head of.

The simple answers for her would have been to either:

    ● terminate the affair, or

    ● resign her job and openly enjoy the pleasures she derived from her romance, or

    ● pick another, more suitable boyfriend.

Of course people knew. Of course many in the media knew. Plenty of other leaders of states and nations have boyfriends, girlfriends and “companions”. They make the relationships public, out in the open, as should be the case. Except if they have something to hide.

Gladys Berejiklian obviously did have something to hide.

  31. Barney: “Why the focus on being held to account.

Surely it should be about correcting systems to minimise the chances of it happening again.”

You wouldn’t seriously be asking that question if one of your loved ones had been one of the victims of the quarantine stuff-up.

Imagine your dear old Granny contracts Covid because infected overseas arrivals had been allowed to spread the virus because someone screwed up their quarantine.

“why the focus on being held to account” – you calmly ask.

    Yeah right!

  32. Bulldust
Andrews is fine and is only getting hammered because some people choose to BS in the inquiry when they clearly knew who made the decisions and why.

The opposition is doing what all oppositions do in trying to find things to oppose and the Herald Sun is only good for the footy and racing form guide.

  33. The lack of supervision and oversight of the Quarantine program would seem to be most important issue. From this distance it would appear that there are some in the DHHS who should have been responsible for it, are trying to blame shift on the basis that “we didn’t organise the security – it’s not for us to supervise them”
