Victorian COVID-19 polling, etc.

A new poll suggests Victorians remain sympathetic to Daniel Andrews, despite waning patience with COVID-19 restrictions.

It’s time for a new general discussion thread, but do take note of the other important new posts below this one before diving in:

• New state polling from Western Australia suggests there will be little left of the parliamentary Liberal Party after the election there in March;

• Guest contributor Adrian Beaumont offers his weekly situation report on the ever-eventful US election campaign;

• I launch my Queensland election guide, and in doing so provide a thread for discussion of that state’s October 31 election;

• I humbly plead for donations, as I do every two months.

Other than that, there is one further poll to report on in the shape of a Roy Morgan SMS poll from Victoria, following on from a similar efforts two and three weeks ago. This finds the Labor state government’s two-party lead unchanged at 51.5-48.5, but Daniel Andrews is down nine on approval to 61% and up nine on disapproval to 39%. There has also been movement in sentiment against existing COVID-19 restrictions, with a 61-39 split in favour of lifting the five kilometre rule (50-50 last time), 59-41 in favour of visits to immediate family members (55-45 in favour last time) and 56-44 in favour of a resumption of table service (63-37 against last time). The poll was conducted Monday and Tuesday from a sample of 2223.

  1. The UK is now reporting numbers in excess of 7000 cases per day. 70 deaths per day and their hospital system already being overwhelmed. Well done BOJO

Phil Coorey is no friend of Labor, so stuff like this…

It took Labor a decade to take John Howard seriously. To defeat Scott Morrison, it needs to start thinking its way back to office from next week, opines Phil Coorey. He says that for Labor, next Thursday night will be show time.

    https://www.afr.com/politics/federal/budget-reply-has-make-or-break-feel-for-labor-20200930-p560l4

… just means Coorey (and his ilk) set the test, then appoint themselves as judges of the outcome

Here we go, it never ends.

Coorey thinks Labor needs to lift it’s game.
So, he’s no friend of Labor.
    Try and make sense.

  3. Seven new cases in Victoria, two deaths

The Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed seven new coronavirus cases in Victoria overnight.

Sadly, there were also two deaths.

Yesterday, there were 15 new cases in Victoria, compared with 13 on Wednesday, 10 on Tuesday and just five on Monday – the lowest level since June 12.

  4. PRGuy sounds objective:

“Reminder: during all this, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has never criticised the media. Every day he turns up to provide updates and answer questions, despite the obscene attack by the media on his democratically elected government in the middle of a pandemic.
When we say #IStandWithDan – we are saying we stand by our democracy. This is a wakeup call to all Victorians – you voted, your say is sacred and nobody should take that away from you. #ThisIsNotJournalism #AccuracyMatters
Please share your thoughts on #ThisIsNotJournalism in your own tweets (or replies) today (remember the hashtag). How has it made you feel? Has it made #COVID19Vic worse for you? I will be reading and sharing all your tweets on this subject.”

  5. Looking at the numbers from France and England and then Victoria’s numbers, I just hope that Dan Andrews continues to ignore the Liberals who are baying for him to open up his state quicker. It’s almost as if they want him to open up quicker so that a 3rd Wave will be created which will knock him out politically. They wouldn’t do something as cynical as that, would they?

    The trend is with us.

If cases remain low the Premier expected Melbourne to take the third step on the state‘s COVID-19 recovery road map on October 19, a week earlier than originally scheduled.

Former PM @HonTonyAbbott says Vic’s lockdown is the strictest tried in the world outside Wuhan.

But we found multiple instances of harsher measures in other countries, as well has higher stringency indexes, so we found his claim to be wrong: https://ab.co/3cPdUjt #factcheck

  8. Coorey thinks Labor needs to lift it’s game.

Mundo, it’s so early for you to be so feverish with your posts. Try pacing yourself. Have you had any sleep since your pathetic performance yesterday?

Coorey is well-known to be no friend of Labor. So assigning them performance tests of which he will certainly be one of the judges is not intended to be a helpful suggestion. It is a set-up.

  9. Thanks BK for the roundup. The news from the USA is grim. Trump knows he will lose by any fair election, so he has no intention of having one.

I am not much more optimistic about next week’s budget. Another rort-fest coming up, with tax cuts that are neither needed nor helpful.

  10. Divide the UK, Italy’s or Frances’s Covid numbers by 10 to get the Victorian equivalent. Divide the USA’s numbers by 50. Victoria is doing much better.

Victoria had 7 new cases today.

What I don’t get is why the Federal Govt aren’t taking responsibility for quarantine, as they are required to. They could have used ADF facilities to house returnees, even set up temporary villages for them, as they’ve done in disaster zones the world over

There are lots of rural places you could house ppl returning to the Australia.

Voluntary use of technology like a tracking & temp-taking bracelet for just 2 wks, means ppl could have fresh air and space.

And still protect against anyone bringing #COVID19 into Australia.

You do understand that hotel lobbies and shared corridors are not fit for purpose in terms of infection control.

  13. A wave of panic is overtaking Trump and the GOP as their fortunes look increasingly grim

President Donald Trump’s supporters hoped his debate with former Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday night would give his campaign a boost. But many pundits have argued that while Trump’s unhinged ranting and raving during the debate probably didn’t hurt his support among true MAGA diehards, it didn’t win over many swing voters who were on the fence. And two Washington Post opinion columnists, Never Trump conservative Jennifer Rubin and liberal Greg Sargent, are emphasizing that Trump has only made things worse for himself this week and that a mood of desperation and panic is evident in the Republican Party.

“Trump is becoming more frantic and unhinged by the day,” Rubin argues. “He is staring not only at a possible landslide defeat, but potentially, also economic ruin and criminal prosecution. And his kids’ inheritance may be going down the drain as well. Certainly, Trump’s presidency has been a four-year nightmare for the country, but for Trump, it may turn out to be devastating and permanent.”

Neglect. That’s the legacy of this Government when it comes to aged care. #auspol

The damage Trump has done to the USA and by extension rest of globe is incalculable

This pandemic would have have a completely different trajectory with a different president in charge of the USA. That I am 100 percent sure of.

14 cases same time last week.

Getting very close. Forecast says under 5 in the next few days.

I wonder if the Hounds of Hell will look at what Santa is delivering in Europe for Xmas?

  18. Biden is slightly in front in polling Georgia. This is very encouraging. There will soon be more post-debate polling which will give indications about whether Trump is losing further ground or not.

Sweden had 752 cases yesterday. It says so much about Australia that we fixate on a failed, contrarian policy in Northern Europe, while regional success stories like Vietnam and Thailand are almost completely ignored.

  20. “What I don’t get is why quarantine venues which ain’t broke need to be fixed”

Might try that line at the next Biosecurity inspection at work and see if we’re still open the next week…..

On a serious note, that’s not the way quarantine or biosecurity procedures ought to be handled. The consequences of an outbreak can obviously be severe, even when the probability of the event is quite low. Moreover, there are external conditions that alter the potential consequences. In late March when the quarantine system was set up, there were more restrictions on gatherings and activity making any breach of the hotel quarantine system less consequential than three months later, where there was more contact between people and greater potential for spread.

In other words, for the hotel quarantine to work effectively, it is imperative that standards would need to be improved over time. In my experience, the formalized system of inspections and compliance by Federal Biosecurity (previously AQIS) serves this purpose well. It’s a mystery to me why there was such a lack of a mechanisms to tighten procedures over time in the hotel quarantine system by either Victoria or the Federal Government.

  21. Maybe Fred Perry could make its shirts only in white and rainbow colours for a few years….would the Proud Boys dye for their cause?

  22. NathanA

Since end June hotel quarantine in Victoria is only being used for those workers who cannot isolate effectively in their own residence.
Returned travellers will not be coming back to Melbourne just yet.

In order for this to recommence, I dare say big changes will need to be made.

Despite that. I still don’t believe hotels are fit for quarantine purposes.

  25. The repetition of tweets about the quarantine problem is all directed to turning what has been a Victorian problem into a national problem which it isn’t.

The agenda is to try and absolve the Victorian government of any responsibility, an agenda which the Victorian government itself does not pursue which reflects well on its credibility.

Scott Morrison. I thought you already knew that?

  28. Victoria

Absolutely agree. If you want to work with biological material that could cause an outbreak in local birds or fish, you have to be accredited with Biosecurity. Must be trained, facilities inspected etc. For good reason too. Why shouldn’t this be the case for places quarantining people at risk of coronavirus?

Don’t really care who’s responsible, Feds or State, just do it.

665 aged care residents have died.

The neglect in our aged care homes is a national tragedy. Scott Morrison can’t keep walking away from his responsibilities.
