Newspoll: 51-49 to Coalition

Primary vote movement from Newspoll in favour of the Coalition and against Labor, as the government sneaks back into the lead on the two-party headline.

Courtesy of The Australian, the latest Newspoll finds the Coalition sneaking back into a two-party lead of 51-49, after a 50-50 result three weeks ago. The primary votes are Coalition 43% (up two), Labor 34% (down two), Greens 12% (up one) and One Nation 3% (steady). Scott Morrison’s personal ratings are little changed, up one on approval to 65% and down one on disapproval to 31%, while Anthony Albanese is respectively down four to 39% and down one to 40%, and Morrison’s lead as preferred prime minister is out from 58-29 to 59-27.

The poll was conducted Wednesday to Saturday from a larger-than-usual sample of 2068, which suggests we will be seeing state breakdowns in the coming days showing leadership and COVID-19 performance ratings for the state governments and Premiers.

  1. Are the press gallery asking why we aren’t fining people who answer contact tracing questions honestly every day in the hopes that the answer will be different one day?

Seems a weird thing to focus on given why we don’t punish people for giving accurate info to contract tracing.

This is one reason why people who call for the immediate cessation of mining …

As far as I can tell, no-one here is calling for anything like this. But using arguments like this is a common way to misdirect attention away from the fact that opening new mines is neither required nor sensible if we are trying to transition away from fossil fuels.

  3. Mowing this morning – as one does.

The old gentleman from across the road, heading up the road with his walker, stopped for a chat. He’s in his early 90’s and plugging along the best he can- as I am.

The good news mostly is when we wake up in the morning – other than that everything else is secondary.

Those wanting to be listed by BK as a contender for “Arsehole of the Week” are gonna have to lift their game – the list is humongous.

Good afternoon all. Nearly lunch time then R & R. 😎

No misdirection at all, it highlights that the opening of a new mine does not go against what the scientist are saying and to suggest so is misrepresenting their position.

  5. “The polling should be enough for Albanese to disendorse Fitzgibbon and the other fossil fuel cartel members and remove the Green wedge.”

If the ALP disendorses Fitzgibbon, they can kiss the seat of Hunter goodbye. Honestly Rex, do you have any idea how elections work?

I have nothing against Joel. I find him far more reasonable than far-left zealots like Bob Brown.

I can only see this polling as a positive for Labor.

The polling should be enough for Albanese to disendorse Fitzgibbon and the other fossil fuel cartel members and remove the Green wedge.

Why don’t Labor wedge the Greens and LNP?

A wedge requires two faces. The Liberals have the greens,

I think they tried it. But the wedge fell straight through the gap and hit them on the foot 🙂

  8. 1/ i am a slave of no political party – i want labor to win.
2/ mundo – for one, for sure – understands how to fight a culture war to win.
3/ i agree with what Quoll just said, there should be no more phoney debate, this is settled.
4/ i understand Player One’s distinction between using gas as a bridging fuel & the liberal’s drive to open up new gas fields under false pretences.
5/ anyone who sincerely wants to take politics out of this debate should support steggall’s private member’s bill, unless, of course, they won’t, for political reasons. https://climateactnow.com.au/
6/ i’m pleased as punch to be associated with the likes of Player One & mundo & guytaur & Quoll & Rex Harris & the late great Pegasus. did i miss anyone? -a.v.

Based on the most favourable calculations there are only 29,000 jobs in coal in the whole of Australia.

    Coles 112,000
    Woolworths 100,000
    McDonalds 90,000
    KFC 34,000
    Thermal coal industry 29,000

Latest move is a way to bash Labor. As if the coalition isn’t split over emissions.

    Who are the “gibbons”?

    Fitzgibbon and his supporters.

So a grouping of one from what we’ve been able to determine.

He seems to have quite a few supporters right here on PB.

Name them I have only posted and read disagreement with his statements.

And fifty years ago there were 30,000 whaling jobs in Australia.
(Actually I just made that number up, but you get my point).

  13. It is a puzzle why Morrison gets such high ratings on a personal level but he seems unable to shift this adoration to a PV for the LNP above where it was at the election.
Morrison should thank Queensland for his election win and his continued status I fancy. I don’t think he is in any kind of ‘trouble’ but clearly his while the electorate is willing to put up with his shonk, the message is clear that the rest of the LNP are a pretty weak set of operatives……….
The problem for Labor – Federally – still continues to be Queensland and, to a lesser extent WA…………..with support seeming to be males with less formal education, some of the older set and those in the regions. Just how Labor gets these (at least some of these) back is the test………………
Heresy I know, but while Albo seems a nice bloke, being a Morrison clone “nice bloke” is not going to cut it for Labor.
Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any Labor MP in the wings with a bit of mongrel in them……………Chalmers is not it……………………….though with “Qld” attached to his CV, who knows?

  14. Taylormade,

The one consistency that matters is that the the infection rate is rapidly declining and Dan’s plan is working.

So sad for rusted on Liberal whingers like you.

But, I’m sure you’ll continue examining the entrails in the hope of finding something gosmckingly boring to say..

No denying the numbers but my feeling is it’s not Albo’s fault. It’s crazed hardcore ideologues and angry activists who are tethering Labor to the extreme left and making it toxic to mainstream Australia. twitter.com/troybramston/s…

Australia’s Image Is Beautiful. But Look Closer.

Growing up in a Kurdish family in the Ilam Province of Iran, I never expected my life to be affected by Australia’s history of white supremacy and settler colonialism. I had little awareness of Australia, a faraway country founded as a penal colony, and built on the massacres of its Indigenous people and on European migration.

    Remarkable
    Surely you jest
Have you heard of sat navigation
And your own phone can show everywhere you have travelled by car and even on foot

  20. Shellbell,

Yeah, I saw that on the NSW Health Twitter feed. Remarkable.

Some of those contacts are nearly two weeks old now, so fingers crossed we’ve dodged another bullet. The other good news of course is that so many previous clusters now appear to have been snuffed out. So close.

  21. I find it difficult to breathe through a mask, so drop it from my face while driving. Would I be fined? Up till now I didn’t think so.

In the last 24 hours, Victorian police:

Issued a total of 177 fines to individuals for breaching the Chief Health Officer directions, including:
13 for failing to wear a face covering when leaving home for one of the four approved reasons
    6 at vehicle checkpoints

I have about half a dozen I could name off the top of my head. But there is no need – we all know who they are.

What is so remarkable about detailing the taxi driver’s log book or digital stuff they probably use nowadays.
Seems a simple task or am I missing something?

I would think that if you are the sole occupant of the vehicle then there would be no reason to wear one, otherwise I would say you would need to do so.

  25. Alpha Zero

Mmmm. That’s what I thought, especially as I am on my own. Don’t quite understand the report of those fines. Perhaps there’s more to the story.
