Essential Research coronavirus latest, Roy Morgan federal voting intention

Essential Research finds public support for governments’ handling of coronavirus not quite what it was, while Roy Morgan records the Coalition moving into a commanding lead.

As reported by The Guardian, the latest fortnightly Essential Research poll finds approval of Scott Morrison’s handling of COVID-19 at 61%, which is off from a high of 72% in June. Approval ratings for state governments in New South Wales as well as Victoria are also trending gently downwards, with both having lost two points in the past fortnight, leaving them at 59% and 47% respectively. The Western Australian government continues to lead the field on 84%, though this too is down two on last time, with due regard to the very small sample size.

The poll also suggests Australians are unsentimental about civil liberties in the face of COVID-19, with 65% favouring closing the border to all foreign travellers and 52% supporting dedicated quarantine facilities for convalescents. Concerning outbreaks at aged care clinics, 42% blamed the providers, 30% the federal goverment and 28% state governments, and 70% believed the situation had been aggravated by long-term under-funding. The poll also gauged support for taxpayers to underwrite new gas infrastructure at 27% for, 27% against and 32% for neither. The poll was conducted from 1068 respondents from Thursday to Sunday; the pollster will publish its full report will be published later today.

UPDATE: Full report here. It should be noted that the 61% approval rating for handling of COVID-19 related to “the government” rather than Scott Morrison.

We also had on Friday one of the occasional Roy Morgan polls on federal voting intention, which finds the Coalition lead out to 54-46 from 51.5-48.5 when the last such poll was published in mid-July. The Coalition is up 2.5% on the primary vote to 46%, with Labor down one to 32.5%, the Greens steady on 11% and One Nation up half a point to 3%. The poll was conducted over the previous two weekends by phone and online interviewing from a sample of 2841.

You guys are unbelievable. You lap up all the misinformation you possibly can. He isn’t being made President or Co-President or Vice President. He will be just one of a number of advisers on the board.

The Age tried a hatchet job on him this morning over travel arrangements despite having been provided with information debunking their claims.

    “BREAKING NEWS:

The ACT has just passed Truth In Political Advertising laws. I wonder which other jurisdictions will follow suit, including The Commonwealth.”

The ACT!!!! That’s as useful as the City of Vincent passing similar.

  3. Listening to a bit of the Hotel Quarantine inquiry today, the public servants had 24 hours to set it up, and made it clear that they had never done anything like this before ie establish quarantine facilities.

Did they make mistakes? You betcha. Should they have been tasked in the first place? No fucking way.

We have a federal Home Affairs department which runs immigration detention centres. Villawood, Christmas Is, Yonga Hill, offshore facilities etc. They know how to do it. People complain about Serco and the rest of it, but they know what to do.

So why was this dumped on the poor Vics? Because Morrison was dragged kicking and screaming into the mandatory quarantine for international travellers – the States faced with his recalcitrance had to go their own way, especially after Ruby Princess ringing in their ears.

This was a failure of Morrison, Dutton and the federal government. All they have left is blame shifting.

A linear model doesn’t fit a non-linear system. Who knew!

That’s a Fields Medal for you right there, Sir!

  5. I agree sprocket. All the other states can manage hotel quarantine. But Victoria is special and totally incompetent. Yes we wish now Morrison had managed it. Andrews tells the truth, he does not know who managed hotel quarantine, because nobody did. An absolute dogs breakfast.

If only Dan Andrews could visit COVID patients in person. I’m sure they would be instantly cured by his aura and general greatness.

    Oh, you’re back. 😐

    Block function activated.

Ditto. I hope he ends up speaking to an empty room. Oh wait, Mavis will be entranced with his sparkling wit and LvT and Rex will tag team on the trollery drollery with him again. And won’t that up the tenor of PB?

  7. Peter Dutton is pretty invisible these days.

His leadership ambitions might be like those of Bronwyn Bishop in the early 1990s – highly ambitious, someone who greatly appeals to the talkback / Sky News crowd, possessed of a sort of negative charisma that appeals to right wing authoritarians, but, as attested by his incompetent performance as a Minister, utterly lacking in ability.

  8. Given the ACT courts famous delays in dealing with cases anyone prosecuted for breach of the truth in political advertising law will probably face trial sometime after the following election

    [‘Fuck off sockpuppet.’]

Must you? I know WB is okay with expletives; but I’m from the old school, where such language was in my youth, elder years a sure sign of a limited vocabulary.

“Simple (possibly) solution, all ads to be vetted before they go to air or get printed.“

So the public servants can leak then to the Greens or ALP. Good idea. Apparently.

Simple (possibly) solution, all ads to be vetted before they go to air or get printed.

    Vetted by whom?

    Just another Greens brainbubble.

  12. Truth in advertising could turn out to be another pointless gesture because on practically every issue someone will say its lying.

Such a pity the opprobrium over managing hotel quarantine cannot all be sheeted home to Dan Andrews. The NSW Coalition Premier and her government are also making a dog’s breakfast of it. Just in different ways.

Not at all! I do, however, condone & sometimes respect their right to express their views, in the absence of the troika who’ve apparently joined.

  15. Aside from the Canberra Weekly article quoted earlier, I can’t find any reference to a ‘truth in political advertising’ bill being passed today in the ACT.

One bill that did pass today is the banning of gay conversion therapy.

Perhaps it will happen tonight but I think this is the last sitting day before the election.

However I’m happy to be informed if I’m wrong.

  16. Zero coverage of Albo’s excellent speech today.
He probably should have called Scrooter a fucking mental fuck case or cunt or something to get the attention.
    Never mind.

Hilarious, GG and c@t presenting as paragons of virtue.

Sad for you that no one would ever relate virtue with anything you’ve ever

    posted.

You’re a glass half empty personality with nothing but hate for the ALP.

I laugh and I laugh and I laugh at such an insecure nobody that has nothing positive to offer to the discussion.

  18. Based on the statements received as evidence before the inquiry so far, it will be pretty amazing if Justice Coate doesn’t take the broadsword to the Victorian Department of Health in terms of infection control etc within the quarantine system particularly at a time when the risk of exposure was well known.

  19. You’ve certainly changed your tune then, Mavis. Btw, I haven’t joined any ‘troika’. I was targeted by that person and I found it personally offensive that you couldn’t acknowledge that and that you stated repeatedly that he was harmless. No he isn’t.

[‘I hope you didn’t actually put any money on Jeff Horn last night.

Not having a go at you BTW, I just thought at the time you posted it it was a bit of a bold call.’]

It was, indeed. I do hope that Horne gives it away, his victory over Pacquiao seminal.

  21. C@t I’m disappointed in you, I thought you were trying to do better, I log in and you’ve resorted to slovenly dirty talk, what happened ?

You obviously don’t care about the effect nath had on me, or the blog in general. That’s your choice. Says as much to me about you as I need to know. It’s not about me, it’s about you.

Now, as I have said before, could you kindly leave me alone and take your ‘more in sorrow than in anger, passive aggressive schtick’ with you? I can see you and it coming a mile away. Go play with nath. You deserve each other.
