Essential Research coronavirus latest, Roy Morgan federal voting intention

Essential Research finds public support for governments’ handling of coronavirus not quite what it was, while Roy Morgan records the Coalition moving into a commanding lead.

As reported by The Guardian, the latest fortnightly Essential Research poll finds approval of Scott Morrison’s handling of COVID-19 at 61%, which is off from a high of 72% in June. Approval ratings for state governments in New South Wales as well as Victoria are also trending gently downwards, with both having lost two points in the past fortnight, leaving them at 59% and 47% respectively. The Western Australian government continues to lead the field on 84%, though this too is down two on last time, with due regard to the very small sample size.

The poll also suggests Australians are unsentimental about civil liberties in the face of COVID-19, with 65% favouring closing the border to all foreign travellers and 52% supporting dedicated quarantine facilities for convalescents. Concerning outbreaks at aged care clinics, 42% blamed the providers, 30% the federal goverment and 28% state governments, and 70% believed the situation had been aggravated by long-term under-funding. The poll also gauged support for taxpayers to underwrite new gas infrastructure at 27% for, 27% against and 32% for neither. The poll was conducted from 1068 respondents from Thursday to Sunday; the pollster will publish its full report will be published later today.

UPDATE: Full report here. It should be noted that the 61% approval rating for handling of COVID-19 related to “the government” rather than Scott Morrison.

We also had on Friday one of the occasional Roy Morgan polls on federal voting intention, which finds the Coalition lead out to 54-46 from 51.5-48.5 when the last such poll was published in mid-July. The Coalition is up 2.5% on the primary vote to 46%, with Labor down one to 32.5%, the Greens steady on 11% and One Nation up half a point to 3%. The poll was conducted over the previous two weekends by phone and online interviewing from a sample of 2841.

The Victorian premier defended the agreement as important for Victorian jobs, despite the federal Labor leader, Anthony Albanese, saying he was “supportive” of federal authority to cancel international deals reached by state and territory governments, councils and universities.

And where did you get that text from?

  2. Sprocket @5:15. There’s a picture Labor could use in a poster. It’s also a picture that Newscorp would use were they to turn against the PM.

  3. Rex of course takes things out of contexts… The entire response is:

The federal Labor leader, who has previously promised that a government he led would not take part in the belt and road scheme, said he would examine the legislation.

“But the idea that the national interests should be looked after by the federal government when it comes to foreign policy is something that we’re very supportive of; I would regard as completely unremarkable,” Albanese said.

He said China had shifted under Xi to become “far more interventionist”. That trend had to be taken into account when weighing up Australia’s national interests, he said.

Meaning Albanese does not support what Morrison wants.

Rex trying to make Labor bad.
    Rex trying to divide Labor.

You will apologise to Rex when Albanese votes in favour of Morrisons attack on vulnerable Victorians.

  7. Everyone can have their turn of kick a Vic while we’re down …but we’ll be back and we’ll STICK IT RIGHT UP ‘EM !!!

  8. You get the feeling that the Libs have been riffing off Morrison personal poll popularity and have become smug, lazy and arrogant. Parliament re-opening has them flailing.

That Colbeck walk out is a really bad look for the LIbs.

Morrison and co have failed miserably with respect to aged care.
If not for that huge failure
Victoria would not be in this crisis

Greece. Another country getting hit hard with a second surge. A lot of European countries are now experiencing this….just before they head into their colder months.

  11. Some of this stuff on the hotel quarantine inquiry is amazing to read.
Contradictions everywhere. You would think govt departments and agencies would work together in a crisis but they all seemed to be at loggerheads.
We did not have a hope in hell of avoiding the 2nd wave.

Aged Care is a biggy failure.

And we might be seeing the current government falling apart for all the reasons and issues that we are all aware.

Morrison will be hoping the voters forget by 2022.

Libs tend to go hard during the Election period and just dream along in between.

It seems to work for them.

  13. This morning Morrison deliberately threw petrol on the fire, equating emergency powers with lockdown. Saying no-one wants 12 months of lockdown. Liar.

The Victorian Government can, if the proposed legislation passes (which I suspect it will), challenge it in the High Court. I am (despite me not being a lawyer) fairly sure that the High Court will find that it is within the Commonwealth Parliament`s jurisdiction over External Affairs (51xxix). The Victorian Government may well decide that they are too likely to loose to try.

Andrews Should have just let people returning from overseas isolate at home like Morrison wanted.

If I were Andrews and the rest of the premiers.
I would have demanded that Morrison and co put in place a fit for purpose quarantine station

You know the job the Commonwealth is supposed to do.

Or have open borders as Morrison wanted.
Heck he even joined Clive Palmer in his court case
Or threaten aged care homes with funding cuts if they insisted on limiting visitors.

It’s obvious that Morrison and co failed at every turn.
Doing their best to put in on the states.
    Morrison should resign in shame

  16. Lizzie

    Morrison is a disgrace.

Andrews has bitten his tongue so far due to fact that the Commonwealth hold the purse strings.

But I am expecting karma to bite Morrison on the backside at some stage

  17. It has been a real eye opener for many Victorians to see how the public service works in this state.
I had no idea it was so dysfunctional.

  18. Germany is beginning a universal-basic-income trial with people getting $1,400 a month for 3 years

    Pretty small trial.

There was a much larger one in the 70’s in Canada somewhere that they talk about at uni. Not sure why they shelved it – a study(ies?) found it had positive results. It is an interesting concept that I have concerns about but…. seems worth more trials.

Strange that so many Cubans want to live in the US yet so few US citizens want to live in Cuba. I wonder why?

  20. An almond orchard in the New South Wales Riverina has been sold for a staggering $98 million to a foreign investment group.

The 3,841-hectare horticultural property, Mooral, features 808ha of productive almond trees which were planted in 2006 and 2007.

On paper it appears the property sold for a massive $25,514 a hectare. However, it was the water entitlements that boosted the property’s value significantly.

Mooral has 9 kilometres of frontage to the Lachlan River, and water entitlements including 10,305 megalitres of Lower Lachlan groundwater (of which 3,225ML is subject to a lease), 470ML of Lachlan River regulated high-security water and 1,443ML of Lachlan River regulated general security surface water.

I don’t reckon Dan is overly concerned.

He’s said it is the Feds job to come up with alternative programs for employment and development now the Libs have decided to take the food from the mouths of all Victorians.

He also let slip that the RBA have said let it rip with borrowing money.

    Dan’s a pretty smart fellow.

  23. Lizzie

Morrison has from the get go, attempted to shift all the responsiblity of the failures onto Victoria. He knows Andrews needs the feds money, and doesnt expect Andrews to bite back.

  24. Morrison’s speciality is dirty politics.

Dan Andrew’s speciality is hard politics.

Andrews will send Morrison completely unhinged.

“Tony Abbott gets a job in England. He will need British citizenship for that.”

Yeah, fist pump, that or they just issue him a visa that allows him to work like many others.

If Mr Abbott has indeed been appointed to as President (or “Co-President”) of the Board of Trade he would automatically be a Privy Counsellor (to HM the Queen over there, not HM the Queen of AUS), unless the linkage has been altered, and:
    – membership of the Privy Council is not just some random job and it would be unusual and perhaps unprecedented post the Australia Act (previous AUS PCers, inc Doug Anthony and Ian Sinclair, preceded the Australia Act and there is no method for removal, excepting execution, which seems a bit harsh)
    – Privy Counsellors swear or otherwise affirm their allegiance to HM in a way that is inconsistent with allegiance to AUS (including HM the Queen of AUS)

Traditionally, conservatives would know the history and if the rules have been changed would want to know why and would typically object to changes made merely for convenience.

    It’s a A typical play book from Tories/Libs/GOP.

For example, GOP in USA won’t fund Democratic states because they didn’t vote for him.

  30. AL,

Yep. I’ll bet that every State and Territory adopts it (it’s a vote winner after all), but the Commonwealth will be the last, probably the only government that doesn’t adopt it.
