The Australian today brings us the latest set of breakdowns from three months’ accumulation of Newspoll results, and the second to be published since its ambit was extended beyond state, age and gender to education, income, language and religion. Highlights:
• Labor is credited with a lead of 51-49 in New South Wales, compared with 50-50 in the April-June quarter and 51.8-48.2 to the Coalition at the election, and its lead in Victoria is out to 56-44, compared with 55-45 and 53.1-46.9. Once again though, Queensland is Labor’s sticking point, with the Coalition lead recorded at 59-41, compared with 56-44 last quarter and 58.4-41.6 at the election. The Coalition leads 54-46 in Western Australia, compared with 55-45 last quarter and 55.6-44.4 at the election, and is now at level pegging in South Australia, compared with 53-47 to Labor last poll and 50.7-49.3 to Labor at the election.
• The Coalition leads 53-47 among men and trails 51-49 among women, compared with 52-48 to the Coalition among men and 52-48 to Labor among women last quarter.
• The age effect is a little more modest in the latest poll, with Labor leading 58-42 among the 18-34s and 53-47 among the 35-49s, respectively compared with 62-38 and 52-48 last quarter. The Coalition leads 54-46 among the 50-64s and 63-37 among the 65-plus, compared with 53-47 and 62-38 last quarter.
• Whereas the result was a perfect 50-50 among each of the three education cohorts last time, this time the Coalition leads 53-47 among those with no tertiary qualifications and 51-49 among those with TAFE and technical qualifications, while Labor leads 52-48 among those with university degrees.
• The last poll has 50-50 splits among the three lowest income cohorts, whereas the Coalition leads 57-43 among those with household incomes of $150,000 or higher. Last quarter, it was 50-50 among those on $50,000 or lower, 52-48 to the Labor among those on $50,000 to $100,000, 52-48 to the Coalition on those from $100,000 to $150,000, and 53-47 to the Coalition on $150,000 and higher.
• The Coalition leads 52-48 among those who speak only English at home, out from 51-49, and Labor leads 56-44 among non-English speakers, in from 57-43.
• The Coalition leads 60-40 among Christians, out from 58-42, and Labor leads 57-43 among those with no religion, in from 58-42.
The full results can be viewed here, I think without a paywall. The results are compiled from YouGov’s Newspoll surveys from June 3 to August 8, with a combined sample of 6392.
Seems anyone interested in a participatory democratic politics should be steering clear of either Lib or Lab, particularly in Vic.
The Greens are far more democratic internally than the majors, all candidates and MPs are directly elected by members, one member, one vote. The party is not beholden to corporate donors or vested interests and candidates or MPs or pretty much entirely accountable to their local group or state membership and the electorate voters.
The trite argument about not directly electing a ‘leader’, seems a bit nonsensical as only Vic, Tassie and ACT Greens have a position of leader, all other states and territories choose longstanding and currently to have no official ‘leader’ role. There are many leaders in different jurisdictions, campaigns or issues. I’d say many Greens are ambivalent on the issue of ‘leader’ as there are many other big issues and fish to fry. Members can see for themselves how significant decisions like local candidates and internal party positions are elected by members.
Greens voters for the most part give their preferences to whoever they want or deem suitable, as I think it should be.
On the topic of leadership and the Greens, this week sees RDN valedictory and maybe Lidia Thorpe entering the Australian parliament as Victoria’s first indigenous senator. Not sure how that will work with Vic and COVID situation. I’m sure most Greens would be very happy to see her given the opportunity to speak and represent there.
I sent another email to my local state LNP member on the weekend, complaining about his party supporting the One Nation bill to reverse the ban on uranium ore mining in NSW. State or federal, they always reply.
How’s your letter writing going Mundo?
You’re pretty busy, too, I imagine.
Mundo is still not awake.
Albo has already done radio and SkyNews this morning.
Morrison’s words thrown back a t him expertly.

Come on Quoll , considering they are a small party the amount of internal ructions as the reds try and take over the Greens has been more than entertaining. The difference is it doesn’t matter.
The religious right taking over the Liberal party should be a concern for us all.

Being a retired, Air B’n’B owner of an empty property in Tasmania!?! 😆
Morrison has now served 2 years as PM as of today. People will be happy to know Tony Abbott is now the 21st longest serving PM as was passed last week.

WAAHH!!
Hastie’s upset because none of his spiv maaates can sell national research and intellectual property off to China, or anywhere else for that matter.
WAAHH!!
116 new cases, 282 same time last week.
Did we all stay at home and not get tested? It was super wet here in Melbourne over the weekend until Sunday Afternoon.
I’m liking Hewsons musings of late……

I am staggered to see that key members of the Murdoch media are still such apologists for Trump pretending that there is some genius behind all that chaos and incompetence-lost in the colour and movement ignoring reality and global danger of his re-election

Dont know what the testing rate is yet for that result. But it is very encouraging nonetheless.
Looks like Victoria’s infections are finally moving in the right direction.

You can lie as much as you like. The Greens being pro Green means they are not the LNP.
They are not voting for environmental destruction.
Their policies are of the left.
They are just not pro fossil fuels.
Labor and the Greens can work together in common cause.
Your lies don’t change those facts.
We are not a first past the post electoral system.

Infection rates have been moving in right direction from the beginning of restrictions
It’s good to see it continue.
Goodness me.

You may be reassured absolutely. I’m quite well and just now waiting for my most loved daughter to take me shopping.
I remain cheerful and busy with reading and admiring my just now popping up tulips. I seem to be in a fallow period (not blue).
Toodles.☕

Ditto from me
LOL sometimes you really do have to take a closer look at what you’re reading. I can totally see MAGA rubes doing this.
A point to remember.
There are times when Labor and the Greens work with the LNP.
Shock horror. Sacre Bleu!!!!

Mundo would be happier if Abbott had never been born.
Victoria hit a peak at the start of August (few days of 725 odd cases – rolling average of 575 cases), we are now down to a rolling 7 day average of 148 cases.
Next to target under 100, then 50, then 20.
If anyone wants to know why Karen Bass was a serious contender for the VP pick for the Democrats you just have to listen to this interview with her on this podcast. She has a devastating way with words:
https://player.fm/series/no-lie-with-brian-tyler-cohen/postal-workers-defy-dejoy-to-save-usps
And she may be the #1 contender to take Kamala Harris’ place in the Senate for California!
If Australia properly invested in Universities and research, then there would be less incentive for researchers to move abroad.
If Australia properly invested in foreign aid in the Pacific, then there would be less opportunity for other Countries to move in and fill the void.
Just saying!!!!
Guytaur, could you explain why Greens relentlessly criticise Labor and then give their preference to Labor?
guytaur’s premise, that Labor should work with The Greens, is based upon the political equivalent of the foundations of a sand castle. The Greens don’t want to work with Labor, they want to tell Labor what to do or they won’t vote for Labor policy in the Senate or the House, should there be a hung parliament, heaven forbid, thus crippling Labor’s agenda.
No government in their right mind would agree to that.
Anyway, that’s the last thing I’m going to say about guytaur’s valiant efforts to derail the conversation here today when it should be all about the Liberal Party. Not the Labor Party.
PeeBee
Would you explain why you think the a Greens have to be a sub branch of the Labor party?

The PM needs to sack Sukkar and tell Andrew’s he can’t run again. And for once the Media needs to hold him to account.

The ‘It’s a matter for the Victorian Liberal Party’ is just rubbish. Rubbish.

The derail is by all those who pretend Labor and the Greens cannot work together in common cause.
It was all I suggested.
Very telling about the Labor party that they think working with climate denialism MP’s in the LNP is better than taking common cause with the Greens on policy both parties agree with.
Oh dear the Greens might have a critique!!!!
Maude Lynne @ #2596 Monday, August 24th, 2020 – 8:54 am
Always. Although I have given up writing to Malcolm to complain about his wilful wrecking of the NBN. Couldn’t get a freakin’ reply.
Erica’s gonna cop an earful shortly.
Cheers.
I was surprised to see has slipped the 15th story on the ABC thread.

The purpose of the branch stacking was to insert more religious conservatives into the Liberals. As if we need more of them!
May as well add Sucker and Grecian 2000 to the list. Scrooter ain’t sacking anyone.
Hypocrites:
From The Grauniad blog.
lizzie @ #2566 Monday, August 24th, 2020 – 8:30 am
So in equating the two (welfare = job), McCormack simply highlights that as the Govt responsible for providing both (welfare and jobs), they are in fact providing neither.
A few comments from Scotty when Labor were caught branch stacking:
“the Labor Party are absolutely at war”
“Anthony Albanese has been totally burned by this scandal”
“We’re fighting for jobs, they’re fighting each other”
“Anthony Albanese is leading a party in absolute chaos and disarray”
I hope Albo goes out today and uses these exact words with the name changed.
Ridicule can be a powerful attack.
lizzie @ #2636 Monday, August 24th, 2020 – 7:51 am
From the report this wasn’t evident, it seemed more the case that they were targeting groups where they were able to get multiple signatures and hence gain control of the branch.
You are right that their ultimate aim was to get more religious conservatives, but not so much into the Party, but into our Parliaments. 🙂
BK @ #2538 Monday, August 24th, 2020 – 8:00 am
and something beyond the scope of ‘professional’ journalists apparently.

That seemed to be the implication in the ABC Richard Willingam’s report.

An even better idea is for someone with video/audio editing skills to use footage of Morrison and just edit out every instance of the word Labor with Liberal.
That raises the mockery quotient exponentially.
Whatever the Greens might think about themselves and their role in national politics, they play the same Labor-spoiling role as Hughes, Lyons and Santamaria. Their purpose is to disable Labor and prevent working people from exercising power. They are as successful as their antecedents in this project. Labor has been split four times since 1917. The splits keep the LNP in power.
I didn’t realise Morrison was still promoting his cooking skills. Can someone tell him we’re not interested in his curries, or whether “the girls” enjoyed it?
