Newspoll: 52-48 to Coalition

Little change on three weeks ago in the latest Newspoll, although the Coalition’s headline lead narrows slightly.

Courtesy of The Australian, the latest Newspoll has the Coalition’s two-party lead down to 52-48 from 53-47 three weeks ago, from primary votes of Coalition 43% (down one), Labor 33% (doen one), Greens 11% (up one) and One Nation 4% (steady). Scott Morrison is steady at 68% approval and up two on disapproval to 29%, while Anthony Albanese is respectively steady at 41% and down two to 38%. Morrison’s lead as prime minister has nonetheless widened very slightly, from 59-26 to 60-25. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Saturday from a sample of 1509.

I actually wasn’t aware he had a speech impediment until you said so. He sounded no worse than anyone else, to me. Certainly no worse than Morrison’s frantic gabble.

  2. Albo wrote a piece that was in the Australian today basically saying Morrison had adopted Labor policies in response to Covid and shouldnt return to the conservative ideology of Thatcher and Reagan. Sounds like he just lying in wait at the moment.

For a government that doesn’t believe in science, think climate change, the Libs are currently using science as an excuse for things like not closing schools and not providing more efficient masks.
The problem of course is that with respect to covid the science isn’t settled, there just hasn’t been enough time to rigorously test any hypothesis. It does however give them an out when things go wrong, “we were following the science”
I think people deserve to know that they are in untested waters and they need to act with abundant caution, unfortunately that would hurt the economy so it won’t happen

This is shocking – we have seen the devastating impact of COVID-19 outbreaks in aged care in Australia and across the globe.

Why was the Morrison Government not better prepared for outbreaks that would impact our nation’s most vulnerable?
No federal COVID plan for aged care, commission hears
Neither the federal health department or the aged care regulator developed a COVID-19 plan for aged care, the aged care royal commission has heard.

This catastrophic communications failure led to a potentially deadly delay in responding to the outbreak at St Basil’s.

Time and time again the Morrison Govt has been warned about information sharing failures between its regulator and the Department of Health but has not acted.

    What a catastrophic failure.

The Morrison Government’s aged care regulator knew about an outbreak of COVID-19 at St Basil’s for four days and failed to inform the Department of Health.

A few impressionists used to do Captain Kirk exaggerating his pauses between his statements. Maybe Albo is channeling him.

  7. Given meher baba has implied that some commenters on PB were hoping cases in NSW go up I think he has limited space to take umbridge at similar suggestions.

As to previous posts about why Andrews was successful in Victoria (electorally). I’d say it’s a combination of him seeming genuine to the public and the fact that he is of the left riled the Liberals up so much they engaged in a stupid, self-indulgent culture war election while failing to recognise that the Victorian public weren’t responsive to it. Given that Tim Smith has to bag Andrews on a right wing Sydney radio station and Matthew Guy is out crapping on people who dare have a positive word for the Premier doesn’t really give the impression they’ve changed tactics.

The pandemic has a long way to play out yet so predicting political consequences now is a bit misguided.

  8. The thought of the dolt Bowen as health minister terrifies me.

There’s not a portfolio he’s had that he hasn’t stuffed up.

I really liked your post. My wife has been dead for eight years and consequently I have had no contact with either of the facilites in which she resided.

One was a BUPA establishment about which I have no good words. The other was more or less as you described although with a lot of overlap between various staff.

One aspect which concerned me greatly was the bullying that went on. I was often the recipient of confidences regarding such bastardry, probabably because I was seen as a safe vessel. The victims were afraid to go to management and some of the very best staff left for greener fields.

You obviously know the field and thanks for your post. My little rant was, I guess, just exorcising a couple of ghosts.

    Toodles. ☕

Making it a question in Question Time made it a Partisan Party Political issue that should never have happened.

  14. Buce,

Some might say that Morrison over riding the unanimous recommendation of the Panel is a political intervention that should be questioned.

These accusations that others are politicising a matter are ridiculous. So what if they are? They are politicians.

Bullying and whinging is rife within aged care homes. Some say it’s because it is largely a female workforce. I found that when everybody had to walk in each other’s shoes the whinging often turned to constructive ideas about improving the situation.
It is also a very physically and mentally demanding job and is made worse when most providers don’t look to how they can provide career progression and involvement in decision making. Both these things aid in giving workers a sense of worth but don’t fit well with a top down management style as utilised by big players.
I am pleased to see some reporting of the need for smaller more community linked providers getting some airtime.

    Really???

Why did Morrison not accept the original recommendation and put it through another process that had never existed before?

One might suggest the Government didn’t like the recommendation and were looking for a reason to not approve it.

    Who was really playing politics?

  17. GG, Everyone else

The distraction is working. We’re talking about a dead guy thats been dead for over 50+ years.
Who cares about this VC other than some people in the north of Tassie.
I only care if they pay our DVA funds to the family because I think that’s a bit much at this point. But really I don’t mind either way.

Lets take a deep breath and refocus on the fact that people are dying today because of the lact of action of our PM and Federal Health minister.

Has Chris Bowen as shadow Health minister had anything to say about the aged care fiasco.

Julie Collins is the shadow aged care spokesperson and has been very vocal on social media.

Albanese should have her by his side daily in front of the cameras.

Albo would have to be in front of the cameras daily for that to work.
    Do you see the problem.

  19. A handful of comments on a psephology site with limited exposure is a momentous distraction worth commenting on?

You really overreach in your desire to bag Labor and Labor supporters sometimes.

  20. Does anyone know why Morrison vehemently opposed the awarding of the VC and today tries to bask in the glory when it is finally awarded?

  21. Barney in Tanjung Bunga says:

I’m not going to rehash it – the decision making process and reasoning has been fully explained in public by the PM.

  22. This is not a myth. A friend’s phone, on the table in front of her, suddenly complained that she wasn’t speaking clearly enough!

Be careful what you say when your phone is in the room. Talked about a heat fan a friend had in her kitchen at the weekend, and now suddenly getting ads for them popping up in FB! Big Brother is Watching You / Always Listening.

  23. As for Albo’s “speech impediment”, I don’t think it would warrant a clinical diagnosis (I’m a speech pathologist). But on a purely aesthetic level, the the precision of his articulation could possibly be improved if he opened his mouth a little bit more when speaking. Also, he would benefit from being careful to enunciate clearly when there are lots of consonant clusters in a row (I just listened to him say “it’s Australia’s fastest growing state” in a 7.30 interview on YouTube, which has a lot of clusters all in quick succession, and he’s a little less clear). It also sounds to me as though his facial muscles and throat are tighter/more constricted than normal for an optimal speaking voice – but again, these are only aesthetic concerns. Granted, they may be important for a politician or someone who does a lot of public speaking.

It’s probably more likely that he has been advised to slow down his speaking rate a little bit by inserting pauses (though I have not seen the most recent interview/s) every so often. But that’s mainly to help morons interpret what he’s saying, I suspect. Dubya and Obama did the same thing – insert a pause after every short phrase to give the plebs time to process each chunk of information before receiving the next. And repeat, repeat, repeat!

  24. Lizzie

We tested this theory years ago. It really is the case. We come up with obscure things and lo and behold, it would pop up 0n our screens.

“These accusations that others are politicising a matter are ridiculous. So what if they are? They are politicians.”

The use of Question Time questions is the big problem. I have no issue with politicians making representations on behalf of constituents and there are many means and channels through which that can be done without it becoming a public partisan party political issue.

I did wonder if it assisted the deafness interpreters, but I think they probably go for longer thoughts, rather than short phrases.

Oh, that too. I don’t know how the Auslan interpreters keep up, really. Though they don’t need to sign every single word that is said, at least.

  28. I wonder why Lambie (who actually has been in the army) is so upset with Morrison’s behavior over the VC while our weekend worrier is not.

  29. I’ just enunciated in the presence of my phone the words “I’d like to buy a pogo stick”.

    Let’s see what happens.

“Does anyone know why Morrison vehemently opposed the awarding of the VC”

I’m not sure “vehemently” is the correct adverb. His full reasoning is publicly available – you can look it up in Hansard if you wish. It was a logical conclusion based on clear principles.

  31. The real scandal here is Morrison has wasted 60 billion on his suppression strategy and we as a country have nothing to show for it. Time for the adults to stand up and utter the words elimination.

  32. Buce,

There’s the problem. I don’t see it as a problem at all and in fact, believe it is a highly appropriate forum to question the PM’s decisions and decision making process.

I was in the Regular Army for almost exactly the same time and a member of the Australian Army for many years more than her and I’m just as proud of my Reserve service as my Regular service.

I’m completely aware of the decision making process and principles that have been followed. I’m not going to do the work that the ignorant bile spewers should do themselves.
